2025 AFL Draft and Trade Dates:

Fri Oct 3 - Fri Oct 10: 2025 Free Agency Period
Mon Oct 6 - Wed Oct 15: 2025 Continental Tyres AFL Trade Period
Wed Nov 19 - Thu Nov 20: 2025 Telstra AFL Draft

He doesn't get it as a "choice" at the same time as such - national draft comes first :)

And if he goes as a senior, full-list player, then it's always 2 years to start.

Is the national draft before the DFA window? In other words if we don’t offer him a contract but commit to rookie him, the only way another club can get him is through the draft?

No such thing as committing to rookie a player in the DFA window.

If we commit to him as a rookie, the only way that gets confirmed is, AFAIK, in the rookie draft. Happy to be corrected.

Afl.com saying cats will only have 2 selections in the national draft. Pick 19 and Mellor I assume and then add Rongdit onto the rookie list.

If rongdit gets through the main draft (which he should given his injury) we can then pre list him as a cat b rookie but our cat b rookie spots are full (clohesy and burke). So we would either have to elevate Ted to the main list or delist him unless we are making rongdit a cat a rookie.
The issue we will find trying to trade p40 into next year is no one wants later picks in this draft. Only a club needing bid points would do it (for example gc or Sydney if King and Carmichael get bid early) to say swap 40 for a future 3rd or something.

1. Kolo wasn't fit.
2. Stewart and Kolo are not his competition.
3. He is the only small defender not in the team on the list that IS AFL standard.

Bailey should have kicked on Clark playing in defence in the GF. You reckon he has that much influence on Bews? I know he wouldn't have.

Should be retained.

Maybe be should be but other contracts and list numbers dictate he wont be.

I wonder if we can move someone like Stanley to the rookie list. We're so tight for list spots.

It's also impossible to see us bringing in a depth ruck unless it's via the rookie draft with no spaces on the list.

We technically can. We announced he has a new contract but we didnt specifically say it was senior list. You could delist him at the 1st list lodgement and pick him back up as a rookie because at his age realistically no one else would pick him up (and they would know he would retire if they did). Not sure if we will though.

This will be fun once you keep reading on :tearsofjoy:

I don't mind it but I dont know how the numbers would work re cleared senior list spots. Maybe the afl are going to give us an exemption to let mullin do one more year on the rookie list.

People can come at me

But I would take Zac Bailey over Zak Butters
I get it, but one is the 4th or 5th best player in his team, the other is the 4th or 5th best player in the league.

Still easily our best lock down defender and a rare coaching blunder he hasn't played more
Agree entirely about it being a rare blunder from Scotty.
If only Lowther and Corrigan had so few errors as CS they wouldn't be so woefully incompetent.

The dates dont work that way.
List lodgement one is fri 31/10 then the DFA window opens the week after to run until just before the draft on the 19th nov. Which means any club can take him as a DFA before we then take him back as a rookie on the fri 21st nov (stanley is different because hes older and no one will touch him but someone young like stevens or clohesy might get taken). The trick is to delist someone you want to keep but who you know is so lowly rated other clubs wont take them (this is what gws are about to do with conor stone etc) but he could get poached.

I'd be disappointed if we go into the draft with less than 3 spots, even if we don't use the last one.

I wouldn't and im usually a draft guy. It's not a great pool so nothing outside the top 20 really enthuses me. There's not much difference between pick 30 and a rookie pick this year.
We will have to have a bigger turnover though next year due to need to transition the list. But some retirements (stanley, possibly danger etc) and fringe guys (knevitt etc) getting delisted plus trades should see to it.

Are we allowed to trade our P19 this year for future picks? I'm wondering if we're in a position to see what trading down P19 nets us in terms of futures, with a view to grabbing Mellor later.. and then having more to work with to put an offer together for Butters.

The skill in recruitment is seeing what others don't, finding out information without revealing it to others.

I'm expecting that we'll use our 2nd pick and I'll feel disapointment we don't have a 3rd. I think there is a bit of group think happening, I don't think the draft footage I seen has been particularly that noteable in either direction. But if too many go all in the its a bad draft direction, I think it opens up opportunity

We are but with the change to the bidding rules etc a lot of clubs will want to hold their r1s next year not trade them so we might only get offered say a future 2nd for 19 etc. But its possible if theres a slider and there's a player a team really rates there at 19.

Mullin is cat b rookie. They can do up to 5 years as cat b, except when they’ve played more than 10 afl games by end of year 3. This is the case with Mullin and therefore has to be upgraded this year (as part of a previously extended contract which effectively guaranteed that he’d get moved to the senior list).

Yes but this depends on whether the year he stayed in Ireland while on our list counted or not or whether he can therefore do an extra year as a rookie. Either way he will get elevated its just a matter of whether its this year or next.

I'd want three picks too.

It's not the draft to load up and take 7 or 8 (including rookies) but I'd be happy to take 3 + Mellor now that we've got a decent pick to start proceedings.

There's a few in this draft that I doubt we'd take, but would be more likely to offer something than KMF IMO. You could probably say the same about Retschko tbh.

Guess it all just comes down to contracts though. It's never been the Geelong way to delist contracted players, even if they're on minimum chips.

Its the top end that is average in this draft. No really elite prospects. Heaps of clubs want nothing to do with this draft.

It's not the 2nd/3rd rounds that are the issue. There will be AFL players taken late and think Geelong can do well

But I would take Zac Bailey over Zak Butters
I would not, but only because I rate Zak Butters so highly, especially for our needs.

I know that the Crows are very keen on Bailey. NT boy who boarded in Adelaide.

I will expect Adelaide to have a crack at Bailey and then load up for Wanganeen-Milera the following year.

Brisbane will be picked apart, with clubs coming after its stacked side with much bigger contract offers.

With Brisbane's poor form vis-à-vis Cam Ah Chee, expect the Crows to pick him up and then load up for Bailey, partly out of spite.

I think we're as a good a chance as anyone to get Butters. I just don't think Bailey is on our radar and nor are we on his.

Bailey is obviously a gun but also a position we are stacked for talent in ie Miers and Mannagh.

Butters (or Walsh) would fill a glaring gap in the team.
