The time has come here in hell to restart a tradition that has been culturally significant to generations of Australia's who had nothing but free to air television, Sunday night at the movies.

The premise: Each Sunday a poster who wants to be part of this will be selected on a rotational basis to select a movie for us to watch. We have a week to watch the movie if and when we can and discuss it in this thread. Preferably we would select a movie that is available on the free to air streaming services such as SBS on Demand, 7 Plus and so on. As most have Netflix or Prime so this is also an option.

There is no obligation, just an opportunity to perhaps have movies suggested to you you might never watch otherwise and do likewise for others. Also the opportunity to discuss the movie and you opinions on it. Anyone welcome to jump in at any time.

to find out what movie is on what streaming service check out: https://www.justwatch.com/

I think I forgot the second half of this movie existed :tearsofjoy:
Mrs Crim has retired early so am watching it now.

Man Australian 90s movies were so innocent and easy to watch.

Gralin and Proper Gander I think those who will, have watched the movie, I'm happy to discuss whenever.

Headless it's you turn next so I'll save you a response and just tag Dory_77 to let him know it's his turn.

Dory, you're up for the next movie nomination.

Ladies before gentlemen.
I’m no lady, and I wouldn’t call you a gentleman, but sure. I’ll go first.

It’s complicated.
Did I enjoy the movie: yeah.
Did I think it was a good movie? Okay - but probably not.

I think Crimson mentioned how it’s refreshing to see those low budget Australian movies of the time, and I totally agree.

Despite the writing/production crossover, I don’t think it was as good as Malcolm.

Actors are good (albeit side actors OOT, but it’s light comedy so you expect it).

The thing that made it okay, but also a bit meh was the whole structure of the film. All the key deliverables were at the wrong time or off centre.

It’s a story about an ordinary kid with a silly car obsession (Jaguars). He wants the popular girl who is out of his league, he loves his parents but he and they are a bit out of touch with understanding each other.

These types of films you already know how it ends, but that’s fine so long as the timing is right.

I feel as though the objects of the film happened too early. He pisses off the girl, then sorts it out way too early. He hurts his parents by trading the Cedric and realises how he hurt them half way through. So basically the key parts of the emotional journey - learn lessons about yourself then get rewarded (get the girl) pretty much were done and dusted at halfway point.

Then you’re watching cute low budget car stuff, low romantic tension because it’s kind of sorted.

Also the weirdo parents were a cute idea that doesn’t quite come off. Plus the aggressive father of the lady love doesn’t quite come off - he’s kind of a guy that has a vague distrust of a boy who dates his daughter, gets angry because his car gets a spray job.

Everyone plays their role well, but the narrative never really alters your heartbeat, and the central character isn’t a really daggy teen, or a swagger type like Ferris Bueler.

I enjoyed it but it didn’t make much sense.

You and me could write great teen coming of age films!
I very much liked how five minutes into the movie he was like

"Would you date me if I had a cool car?"

"Cars aren't important"

"Cool because I've got a Jag so you should date me"

Classic boy doesn't listen to girl because he's already decided what she should think and then hijinx ensue deal

Maybe we could flip it?

What was interesting is that the general theme is an early 80’s brat pack movie and it basically plays out that way.

Other than sex being involved. Ben M. character is at ladyloves house getting a post-whatever massage, then a bit later there is Greek friend guy having it off with bitch best friend lady.

Feels like a workable, fun flick that has you enjoy yourself without reflection, but too many odd elements working against each other.

Timing was way off, one minute into the film they were already deep into the story with zero character development other than he likes cars and she doesn't.

also, none of them have any depth to them and as PG said the story progressed so quickly they didn't have time to learn anything through actions/consequences.

Bisley's character was so over the top I enjoyed it. And did lol at Australians love for the over the top Greek character.

Despite the film being poor in so many areas I liked it.

I think I liked it because it felt Australian. By that I mean the Australia I grew up in in the 90's. Also loved seeing the Westgate freeway and a Melbourne with very little tall buildings, the only one that stood out was the Rialto.

I reckon I agree with all of this.

Bisley’s character is good fun. But the slapstick elements don’t quite gel with other moments. Though yeah I enjoy the OTT Melbourne Greek boy spoof - which is a stereotype that is so Melbourne. I think the ideas all work, need to be rearranged a bit maybe. It’s like the girl boy drama gets resolved then the writers turn their attention to the slapstick car engine swap drama.

I feel like it’s almost another thread, but I have a selection of movies I love for reasons that are hard to explain - don’t always align with the “best films of all time” lists.

Probably everyone does. Always feel a bit shy about confessing them because people go WTF and start talking about the genius of some other person

Like guilty pleasures?

Like guilty pleasures?
Pretty much.

I don’t think my guilty favourites are terrible though - reckon most would say they are solid. But I have slightly random favourites that probably didn’t get 5 stars from the experts sort of thing.

Good pick! But that sort of makes you seem cool anyway.

I mean, a movie I keep watching is Parenthood (maybe the only Steven Martin film I’ve enjoyed).

It doesn’t even make sense. I’m not a parent and I fear and despise parents.

Oh man, I love Parenthood!
One of those films I just seemed to catch every year on Free to Air television for like a decade. So good.

THE MAN WITH TWO BRAINS is the only other Steve Martin film I know, I really like it. Only saw it recently.

Man with two brains is funny! I’d forgotten that one.

I have other random movies I really like. Thelma and Louise I reckon is one of your quintessential road trip character growing stories. Some people hate it though because they think it is an anti man propaganda piece or some shit.

I really love the Black Stallion (first half in particular) but that’s really dumb because you’re meant to be 12 to love it

Saw the black stallion at the movies as a kid!
