It’s easy to throw around list clogger but the reality is we need a back up kd in case buss goes down. Gardner is suitable backup.
He is the defintion of a list clogger. He aint coming in if Buss goes down, they didnt bring him in against the Crows and chose Coffield to play on the thrid tall.

Bearing in mind that historically our option A is three KPDs and our backup is two KPDs + one medium, and occasionally even one KPD + two mediums, our depth at the three positions is:
Lobb
JOD
Buss
Cleary
Khamis
Gardner
Walker
Sellwood

It would take two KPD injuries to get us to the territory of being a bit concerned, and three unlucky KPD injuries to put us in "oh shit" territory.

Any team in the league would be in deep shit if they lost three KPDs.

I don't see the value in a Frost.

I think the issue is that we don’t really have a FB. Not confident that we will be able to restrict teams with a big key forward.

Frost is more of a FB than what we have. But not sure he can still do it anymore.

Ted Clohesy delisted by Geelong, we were interested in him last year as part of the Smith trade. Potentially goes to the Suns to play with his brother though.
Stevens also delisted (they'll take him as a rookie), nothing stopping anther club taking him as a DFA though.

With Stephen May off the discussion agenda (rightly so) we are now reduced to repeating the same gazillion posts about the inadequacies of Gardner as we had last off season. And the off season before that. Is that really the best we can do?

Seriously if there’s nothing to talk about wouldn’t it be better just to keep quiet until there was?

I mainly come here in the off season to check if there is news of any substance, or any trustworthy ITK whispers. Otherwise I’d rarely spend much time here.

I have never understood how so many can use up so much time and bandwidth on mostly repetitive and idle discussion of the list. I have no problem if other people want to do that all day. I just don’t want to feel i have to read through it all in the hope of finding a tiny snippet of genuine news.

So perhaps it’s time to separate Trade and List news from Trade and List chatter? Past efforts to do this haven’t been terribly successful though.

Is 'delist Gardner' the new 'what about Steven May'

Do they have the list spots for that?

We wanted some midfield depth I would look at taking Stevens.

I think ideally you would have two keys and two mid-sized defender's who can intercept and play up if needed. All the good teams have this sort of setup but our mediums haven't really shown that they can play taller and it just leaves us more vulnerable. Maybe Walker or Sellwood can be that guy but it's an ask relying on guys who have never debuted. Khamis while being an interceptor is a poor defender, Cleary and Williams looks far more comfortable defending smalls and haven't been comfortable playing tall, Coffield's body doesn't look right but who knows. Doesn't give much option but to play the three tall defenders or backing Khamis to be the third despite his limitations. Khamis was serviceable enough when asked to play as a key defender for a stretch in 2024 (played decently against Carlton and Geelong, but was really shown up against Adelaide with the Fogarty matchup)

Also Lobb might still be needed as ruck if English gets injured. Think we all like Smith's progress but there is no guarantee he will be serviceable in the AFL next season and Lobb might have to fill that role still. I think it's too light on and we need to bring in a stopgap full back, even if they were to play VFL all year

I guess most clubs woukd be in trouble if their prime kpds/kpfs went down . Brisbane probably don't have Harris Andrews mk2 waiting in the ressies, if the real one goes down.

Collingwood did well with a patchy forward line last year, as did Brisbane themselves .

Clubs have to make mend and do

Our problem is that we have been in trouble against the best sides even when Lobb and JOD were fit, and Jones was injured.

I agree that we will be ok against most sides with our current 1 and 2 preferences particularly if JOD continues his development. But if one of them goes down or struggles for form then we are in trouble, plus we should be aiming for significant improvement in a defence that was clearly found wanting last year.

I’ll be very surprised if we don’t try to pick up a mature bodied KPD between now and the start of the 2026 season.

Payne is a very very good KPD for the Lions. I wish he said yes to us a few years back when we chased him.

I have never been a Gardner fan, but thought he deserved a run of games this year. He was brilliant at vfl level.

His a confidence player and I think a run of games he’d of eventually carried his form over and we’d of been a better side for it in the long run.

I see a world where he plays a lot of football next year and he is serviceable in a contending team. He needs the right ground level players around him though as he a major liability at ground level.

I also don’t think the answer is one key defender, the answer is either a complete makeover of the back 6 all shapes and sizes or gameplan. I reckon Jaques and Budarick are certain starters round 1 26 (I watched a chunk of preseason last year and Jaques was the most impressive of the young guys before injury). Selwood a probable, looks a real compeitor. Gallagher would also be a chance at half back. Freijah could also go back if Treloar plays mid minutes.
If you have Kayo go back and watch our round 13 game against Hawks then see if you have a different opinion

One of the best list cloggers out there

Well, if you are going to have a list clogger, you may as well have a good one.

Nothing worse than a poor list clogger.

Anyone able to summarise what they said on Gettable about us?

Just talking about clubs are already in talks for future trade weeks during the this years current one and played a clip from Regan hinting that they are looking towards future trades years. They think asking the question on Keane from Adelaide might be an example.

Just that clubs are looking ahead to future trade periods but trying testing the waters now. Used the Michael Regan interview where he mentioned that we made enquiries and pushed for trades that didn't come off but that revisiting them in 12 or 24 months may be possible.

Nothing earth shattering.
