Totally agree, but this applies to the whole side. We have some really good kids coming through and if we can develop them, we may turn the corner quicker than expected.

With regards to Ollie, I feel he is the least of our problems, he will give all he has every time. He should play where he can do the most damage to the opposition and this comes down to our coaches as well. Chris Scott exposed him one year playing Touhy on him. Olly could not match him for physicality and Geelong used Touhy as a go to. Our coaches need to be switched on and if the match up isn't there at half back, he moves to a wing and vice versa

Yes I remember that game every well. Saw Touhy line up on Ollie and it looked like men's versus under 12's. It was obvious even on the T.V. that was likely to happen as the game started.

Its funny with coaching, there are so many of them now, they must feel like they each need to do something.

e.g. "lets try Ollie off half back" when he was fine on a wing.
e.g. "lets try Haynes off a wing" when he was fine off half back.
e.g. "lets try Cerra off half back" when he was fine in the centre.

Its very frustrating watching them over tweak when obvious changes go undone.

I would love them just work towards developing "Competence in their Role"

e.g. Keep your feet, don't fumble, don't let the ball get out the back, spoil towards the boundary, two up only when required....etc.

Imagine our team lifting their level of competence in their role by 5%-10% next year and the next and the next

I am entitled to an opinion just the same as anyone else, I believe we have accepted play on the wing that has been substandard for many years, that is my point, I agree 90% has been flaws in the clubs Development systems and teaching of skills. Its just an opinion, don't turn it into any more than that because you have skin in the game.

We have Ollie Florent Cottrell Chesser Wilson Lucas Ison Carroll Flynn Saad Acres Boyd Charleson that could all play both or one of these roles. It's competition that will make our players and team better

I think Cottrell is really a defensive half forward now. He is pretty average as a winger. Can rotate there but thats about it.

I think our wings options are

Acres, Chesser, Florent, L.Camporeale, O.Hollands

2 play every week plus one of Hollands/Florent at halfback. With guys like Walsh, Jagga, Cottrell, Cerra able to rotate through occasionally.

I think for round 1, 3 of Chesser, Acres, O.Hollands, Florent play. 1 will likely miss out.

We do need to keep our options open regarding these flanker types at this stage.

Ollie gives 1oo% effort, but don't think he's got all the tricks to be locked in, pretty sure Florent and Chesser will be given an early try out regardless of form.

Hollands is not taking us to the top 4 unless he dramatically improves his skill and impact, agree worth persevering with on the wing, is not a defender at all! He either goes to the next level or gets overtaken by others.

Why do we have so many half smart posters taking ridiculous pot shots at our players?

I can understand questions, even observations, but to state as fact that our players are basically Sh1t when they are not is inexcusable.

I’d give Chesser plenty of time in the centre circle as well.

Cottrell won't be half back, His one on one defending is poor, have seen him cut to pieces in those positions playing wing. Cottrell was having his career best season this year before it was cut short but I feel he will be half forward who gives the wingmen a rest or it will be mostly VFL.

Florent probably plays half back or wing or both. Hard to say where his primary position will be. That will come down to our needs.

Chesser will be in there somewhere. Hard to say where. I was thinking wing resting forward but he could also be on the ball or off half back. I really don't know, he has elite pace, I think he will be a high level player and his versatility is also pretty good. If he can do it, I would be inclined to play Chesser in the guts.

Holland's best position is half back and that is without doubt. His tendency to flush the opposition with his kicking is a worry. Kicking has improved, we will see how that progresses. He's got more half back attributes than wing. As a half back and after his first game, I wrote with conviction that he was a half back and not a wing and I stand by that. He spoils well, he is not the best kick but is ok when running straight lines with time, his pace is good but not elite, he does not find the ball that well on a wing and is not strong in congestion but finds the ball well at half back and enjoys the openness of that position. He's tough and pretty hard in the contest and can halve contests well despite this not being his strength. He is a very similar player to Kade Simpson who was an ok wingman, unreliable by foot but a good defender, smart player at half back and real competitor.

If we had a player who played like Hollands and kicked like Cottrell we would have a really good player.

We will have other names coming through.

Charleson is a smart footballer, good IQ, will be thereabouts. Next stage of his development is nailing a second position. You play more AFL games if you can play more than one position as a fringe player and it also helps greatly when signing your contract and keeping a spot on the list.

Wilson, he's still working on things, his stamina and his one on one defending as you would expect with a young player are a work in progress but his pace and his kicking is what we want.

L Camporeale, verdict is out for me as to whether he makes it. Has some tools, has footy smarts, good size, gets the ball but his kicking needs to lift quite a lot and his stamina and pace would be good to see come along as well.

Then we have other veteran outside players as well. Hopefully everyone gets really fit because the will be competition for spots.

That is all work in progress. I have opinions on all of them. I absolutely would find a spot for Ollie. Despite assertions to the contrary he can play anywhere bar ruck and KPP.

Florent likely to settle on a HBF, with Newy, Saad and Haynes all near the end, can see him becoming a leader down there as the kids evolve. Those knocking Ollie H need to chill a bit, he was often the sole player presenting both in attack and defence. He was asked to become a play maker in a dour group of old fashioned players. The advent of Florent, Ainsworth and Chesser, better use of Lord and Jagga entering the mix will provide a huge shift in dynamics which will hugely benefit Ollie regardless if used on a wing or off half back.

Chesser screams wing, has size and strength which could give him inside minutes, but is a burst type who should provide a great progression from Acres. I have plenty of time for Lucas C., but he needs a big preseason, particularly adding some punch to his kicking. Think a couple of our HBF types are going to get wing exposure Ollie is obvious, Carroll played a but there as a junior and a little late last season. Cowan certainly could, as well as Wilson and possibly Charleson. Flynn Young is definitely a chance if he gets up to the pace of AFL with a full pre season. Jagga and Lord remain rotations.

Cotters probably remains a conundrum. Not a dedicated forward, and not a dedicated wing. Cannot play disciplined and accountable footy on a wing, gets lost. Fantastic at playing a defensive high half forward role, rolling up as an extra wing come sweeper. The right coaching possibly returns him to a lock, but now needs to co-exist with Ainsworth, Hayward, Moir, Williams and rotating mids like Jagga and Lord, and another one or two small forwards like Frankie and Mots. Can kick a goal and great at making space, but that is often because he is overlooked structurally by oppo.

If you look at what we have an recruited, if many of Chesser, Florent, Ollie, Wilson, Lucas, Carroll, Cottrell, Charleson, Ison can step up we all of a sudden have options around the flanks. We have run

Add this to a fit Walsh, Moir, Lord and Jagga in the middle. It's a completely different look and style

It really should change the way we play.

It should improve on those fundamentals we have been lacking. The ability to chase and run down opposition and apply elite more effective pressure as well as run and carry and more effectively more the ball, creating more scoring, easier scoring and putting a greater physical toll on the opposition when they have to defend against us. These are the primary fundamentals which have held us back during the Voss era.

We will be a better team in 2026 than we were in 2025 and probably in 2024 as well.

You don't just improve on those fundamentals and remain where you are.

Only because of number of games played (Chesser has had surgery earlier in the year and is 100% now). His skill level is next level; his running ability is next level (state middle distance runner) and has genuine speed.

They wanted him big time to improve our running power and delivery.

Chesser will not be playing VFL. 0 chance of that. Question remains where he plays.


We are turning things around in regards to pace.

Chesser, Cowan, Hollands, Williams, McGovern, Kemp, Walsh, Carroll, Wilson, Saad, Moir, Smith, Motlop, Florent, Hayward, Ainsworth are all above average for pace. I think we are still a little slow and immobile in the middle but I am sure we will work on that.

Newy, Saad, Cowan, Weiters, Haynes, Florent, McGovern, Carroll, Dean and O'Farrell later on, will be first choice backs.

Cotts, Smith, Walsh, Cerra, Cripps, Hewett, Lord and Acres will be our first choice mids and wings.

Can't see Ollie preferred over any of them if all fit.

I was thinking with Newman back we might see a Dean debut earlier.
It looked like he was doing a lot of mentoring while injured so they would have a good understanding.
He could help him fast tack development he seems to have a bit of toe and reads the game and ball well.
Not a huge need to wrestle if as third tall tou play a bit back to spoil.
Wietering will have his hands full directing the back line without adding a debutant.
But Newman would get him playing effectively as part of the defensive unit pretty quick and help him with a bit of mongrel if opposition have a go at him as he will still be a bit undersized.
