This. Hewett gets so much ****in latitude on here because of his ability to kick goals, shown very little other than that
When you consider his injuries and setbacks, he is travelling very well.

This is a part of the problem. People want a sugar hit and are quick to discard what doesn't do it for them. The reality is that most young players require years of games and experience to reach their potential. We're in the unenviable position where we already have a lot of them (and we're about to get more) that need this development. Discarding them for the next shiny thing is a waste of talent and resources, while also engraining a poor culture.

What evidence is there to suggest McCarthy can play full time midfield? Why would you take him away from the defence that has no elite kicks in it? Robbing pedro to pay pablo
He played midfield to end the year. He looked better in the middle than coming out of D50.
Put your best players where they can impact most - which means McCarthy to the middle. We need someone just like him in the middle
Agreed Hewett has the ability, i personally think he will make it as a full time midfielder but it will be slow burn as he builds a tank. Injury history also a concern. Hewett also tends to drift in and out out games. 2/3 years away from being a reliable A grade mid.
Who cares how long it takes to be a reliable A-grader? Are we expecting to be challenging for a premiership in 2026?
By his 5-7th season is when we expect him to be hitting his straps anyway, which is more than fine
Reid had a outstanding end to the season as he gained fitness, he still needs chop outs going forward and honestly i like him playing a 70/30 or even 65/35 split. So dangerous.
Doesnt matter whether you like him in a mid/fwd split, hes clearly capable of playing full time midfield and probably will long term. His endurance will only get better, and as the midfield around him improves he will have an easier time of it anyway

We're already exploring it.

The last 3 games of the season, he was in nearly half the centre bounces.

It's going to be a balancing act and he's unlikely to be a prime midfield mover.

I think people of a misconception of AFL midfields. Most team will have 2 or 3 prime movers that spend most of their time in there and the rest is spread amongst a larger group of players that would share duties of around 30-60% each (averaged out).
Yes we have along with Hough. Both should be mainstays in defence.Hough the shutdown man and Mac for his kicking.
Our defence is looking outstanding.
HR, Hewett,Gross,Sharp Hall.
Hang on; is this conversation looping back to “recruiting H/Bs to play midfield “ ?
Nnoooooooo!

Brisbane had Starcevich,Wilmot,Zorko and Fletcher steaming out of defence. Keeping that in mind why would we contemplate taking Macarthy out of H/B?
His decision making and execution is superb and with a full preseason under his belt will surely only get better!
Brisbane also have McLuggage in the midfield, NWM and Daicos are 2 of the best players in the comp, and theyre all playing the same role we'd have McCarthy play in the middle, he has basically the same traits as those guys too.

I think Duursma is an 80% chance to be an A grade player but only 25% or so to be an A grade mid. Hewett probably a 50% chance of being an A grade half forward/mid, but you need more than an A grade mid and an A grade half forward/mid.
Very pessimistic
Warner a good chance to come to the eagles, but he’s a different age bracket to the others.
Irrelevant
Let’s say Hewett becomes an A grade mid, he and Harley are both very offensively oriented and neither are really that contested or balanced transition mid. Duursma the most likely to be that transition mid, but again, we should be giving ourselves the best chance of building an elite midfield, and taking Sharp would greatly add to that.
Doesnt matter what roles the A-graders are in the middle, thats entirely irrelevant. Not even close to being a good point.
Swans midfield alone got them to a grand final, with Heeney, Warner and Gulden as their only 3 A-graders, imagine if they had a backline or fwd line like we should have?
Cats got to the grand final with Holmes and Smith as their only 2 A-grade mids, why tf do we need to diversify our midfield A-graders lmfao just stop it

Discarding them for the next shiny thing is a waste of talent and resources, while also engraining a poor culture.
Who’s talking about discarding players? More that we shouldn’t assume we are sorted for mids just because we’ve seen some flashes

I do think the Swans 2023 midfield will be the best comparison.

Reid - Heeney
Hewett - Warner
Just need to find our Rowbottom, question is whether we want to use pick 2 to do that.

Just because someone played defence at some point in their life doesnt mean theyre a defender. They could just as easily be a mid who plays half back

Theyve been the comparison I keep going back to, main difference is our midfielders arent as small in stature as the Swans mids. If we had a 190+cm guy doing the Rowbottom role, thats the swans midfield weakness completely covered

Hewett is shaping to be a real hard tackling, hard at it footballer. If he gets a clear run at it we will see a big jump in performance and consistency.Needs to work on his disposal to really start hurting teams.

We're going to take a minimum of 3 mids this draft (Duursma, Banfield, Evans). That's on top of some good talent that we already have that need a time investment to develop.

If we're truly chasing needs, we should be prioritising a young ruck and key defender. They are more problematic in terms of young prospects.

Felt cute, might delete later:

WCE (1Duursma, 5Sharp, 7Cumming)
Give 2, 13, 34, 41
Get 5, 7, 21, 51

Melb (9Marsh, 11Lindsay)
Give 7, 8, 37
Get 9, 11, 30, 34

Ess (2CDT, 8Schubert)
Give 5, 6, 21, 30
Get 2, 8, 43

Carl (6Grjl, Match Dean)
Give 11, 43
Get 6, 13

Bri (Match Annable)
Give 23, 51
Get 37, 41, 43, 54

2 things can be true.
No takers for any late picks until WB took pick 53, which makes sense as at least we got somthing for it and 2026 is the place to have more picks for NGA/FS etc.

WC have openly expressed their desire for 3 top 10 picks if possible.
Basically having 34, 41, 58 left after that means we are VERY keen to move 13 as high as we can using some other picks or take an offer from ESS for pick 2 that includes 5 & 6.
Leaving us 1, 5, 6, 34, 41, 58.
If not we may look at 13 & 34 or 41 if we want pick 9 from CAR for a target we want if we take 1 & 2 to the draft.
Also would expect that 1 of those picks could be moved into 2026 on draft night f it falls that way.

As for Pickett, 13 is very early and wouldn't have thought we would jump there, rated around 25-30 so anywhere around there if we were keen we could do if he slips to pick 34 and take Williams anytime after that if a bid comes around there.
Too many ways or means to get both if they think they are the best, not that we want to use 2026 picks but we have the STK pick if we really want them both.

This close to the draft I think almost all scenarios have been worked out for the most part.
ESS offering 5 & 15 supposedly as their fist offer and WC responding with if that your offer we want more or give us your 2026 1st round pick.

I might not have been clear in relation to pick 53, and by extension, pick 58

Had we not traded pick 53 today, it would have been gone. Erased from the board which is what will now happen to pick

On draft night we’ll have picks 1,2,13,34,41 and that’s it. Because of the trade today we have salvaged the Bulldog’s F4 pick - had we waited to draft night we wouldn’t have had pick 53 to trade

If we do end up trading say 13,34,41 to Carlton we probably ask for a lot pick back - they hold 54.

Should we need to match a late bid on Banfield/Evans the AFL invent a pick so we can match provided we have a vacant list spot
