Milera has not recorded a single CBA in the last 6 seasons
Not surprising

We tend not to put our first round pick midfielders in the centre square, let alone flankers

Disagree - thats changed under Nicks.

Nicks gave Chayce Jones 90 CBA's in his first 9 games of 2020 (2nd year on list).

Rachele got 21 in his first 9 career games. (1st year on list)

Dan Curtin got 27 in his first 6 career games. (1st year on list)

Sid Draper got 71 in his first 10 career games. (1st year on list).

The only 1st round 'midfielder' Nicks didnt put into the centre square was the always injured Pedlar.

I remember the trend of seeing Curtin in the center after a goal and within minutes he appeared to be subbed every time. So you have to ask the question as to whether all those CBAs recorded by young players were deliberate. Some were most likely circumstance as our main mids were off or they made a mistake and kept the main players out. But interesting both Sid and Curtin appeared to be moved away from the center as soon as they went in.

There were some key moments in games, towards the end of the season, where Curtin was injected into CBA's

There's nothing to think these Curtin CBA's were un-planned .....there was still experimentation occurring, and player management happening with Soligo and Rankine

I've always subscribed to the thinking Rankine's CBA management was to have him fresh for the Finals .....remembering it was his first year of heavy Mid Minutes ....well that didn't workout all that well

I was talking in his first year. This year big difference. Was a far better player.

Where do you get these stats from?

Have we? I can remember him stinking it up at half forward. Maybe wing too?

Can't remember any centre square time

Not sure about centre square, don’t think I’ve seen it either. But he’s been at stoppages in the past and he’s no good at all. Probably why he didn’t get into the CBAs.

Pretty difficult when your coach see a tall player and immediately thinks he is a KPP despite him playing as a midfield for his junior years and only had a growth spurt during his draft year so played everywhere. I still recall Nicks saying in his first year that he didn't know where to play Curtin. Luckily Davis isn't head stubborn and clueless so Nicks now see him as a midfielder lol.

Nick's saw him as a full back. There is no doubt in my mind. Think it wasn't until after they saw how bad he was in the SANFL then at AFL level in the defensive roles did Nick's click he ****ed up.

Curtin was not ready to play as a mid in his first year in the AFL.

While Curtin's movement in traffic suggested he could be a midfielder in the future, that's also not where he played his best football in his draft year. He was used sparingly as an impact mid but dominated in defence after a decent start up forward (the position he predominantly played as a junior).

Nicks started him in the backline, as any coach would if he had just drafted an all Austalian centre half back (as a play maker, not lock down defender). He then trialed him forward, but also gave him 27 centre bounce attendences, in his last 5 games.

It worked.

I'm more than happy to get stuck into Nicks for what he gets wrong, and there's a lot, but it doesn't make sense in this instance

This is the Rookie Me write up of Curtin in his draft year:

SNAPSHOT: “The top West Australian in the draft pool, Daniel Curtin is a key-position player who moves like a midfielder, with his versatility and class making him a likely top five selection.”

A versatile and mobile utility, Daniel Curtin will be one of the names headlining the pointy end of the draft, having shone at senior and State level throughout the year. Highly regarded in the Western Australian pathways for some time, Curtin stamped his authority as a top prospect in the Under 17 Futures game in 2022, winning best afield honours as an intercepting key defender in that match.

He made a steady start to this year as a forward before finding his best form for Western Australia at the Under 18 National Championships. He claimed MVP honours and showed his value as a swingman, spending time across all three areas of the ground. Playing out the remainder of the year in the seniors for Claremont, Curtin looked comfortable, averaging 16 disposals and four marks playing in defence. After the Tigers were eliminated at League level, he returned to captain the Colts to a premiership, putting the exclamation mark on a superb season of football.

I disagree. I watched his early matches in person. He was set to play as the third tall, aka the Worrell role.

Against the Power in the trial match at Alberton he struggled against several of their taller forwards in one-on-ones. In his first SANFL game he was playing on Freitag (ruck/forward) against the mighty Panthers. It was obvious that our other players were feeding the ball to him and he showed his talent with ball in hand. Unfortunately Freitag had his measure one-on-one and tried to drag him back to the goal square. When we got on top of South in the second half, he played higher up the ground.

The plans clearly changed due to

1) Worrell outstanding form in the AFL

2) Daniel’s ability to win the one-on-ones.

I have no doubt that Curtin would now be excellent in the Worrell role but he has bigger fish to fry.

If Curtin was being groomed as a full back, who were all the full forwards that he played on? He spent some time on McBean against Glenelg and was stitched up just like Murray, Butts, Worrell, Borlase and Keane had been stitched up by McBean in the past. It seems to be the right of passage for our tall defenders.

We had/have Keane, Murray, Butts and Borlase who could play at “Full Back”, why would we develop Daniel as a Full Back?

I have very different info. Nicks never saw him as a defender at all, recruiting team did. One might say Nicks played him there to prove his point.
