I think personally its to much of a risk not to take Mellor with our 2nd pick. If we dont pick him then, there be other clubs get him before our rookie selection

I don't really disagree. But I also entirely trust the club on this one. If they decide not to take him in the ND, they're clearly not totally fussed whether we pick him up or not. It won't be some awful oversight where they get totally blindsided by another club stepping in.

Bizzare we wouldn’t take him. He seems to be a natural footballer who has performed well at all levels including VFL

How do Gold Coast have enough list spots to match the multiple picks they will need for their academy players?

They've delisted a number of players, as well as retirements and trades - they've opened up a lot of spots

I don't think Mellor qualifies as a Cat B rookie. Rongitt I believe does so if he is not taken in the main draft I think we can pre list as a Cat B rookie.

With Mellor we would be just hoping he falls through to one of our CAT A selections. Not sure where he ranks against clubs commitment to select Stevens and KMF as rookies.

If he wants to play AFL why go to Freo? He would be behind Darcy and Jackson for games in the ruck and Treacy, Voss and Amiss for games down forward.

He'll be backup for Darcy/Jackson

As commented online, Fremantle like to play a 2 ruck combo, so if one of Darcy or Jackson is unavailable, that's where Mason comes in

With no more knowledge than having read write ups on players I will throw in my 2 cents worth on our First selection.

If he falls through to us I would take Lindsay. Assuming he does not I would take either Liam Heatherton or Harley Barker (at least then we can say we got Harley). The draft is always a lottery but the upside on either could be high as long as they recover from their injuries.

With our second selection I would be happy with either Mellor or Holmes (always like the idea of brothers). Happy to get the other with our Cat A rookie selection and bring Stevens and KMF home.

Twomey hasn’t released his late phantom yet has he? In any case I doubt it changes unless he’s had some firm mail that we are taking someone else. Not convinced that Thredgold will be our pick. Just doesn’t seem to really fill an area of need and Wells indicated that we would use the draft to fill a couple of small holes.

Especially a developing key position player.

It won't matter too much if they haven't played seniors and are just chipping away in the VFL.

Can't drop much in value as a young tall.

Do you draft a kid in the first round purely as collateral for the following year that may or may not be used?

That's 11 players with one to be redrafted. Fox said this morning GC could trade to get 10 picks, the last at 52. If they use them to get 4 or 5 academy kids, that would leave them with 4 or 5 list spots to fill.

They dont but its a loophole that once the draft opens you can trade in picks you dont have the list spots for (ie you can trade in and use 8 picks even though you may only have 5 list spots) whereas before the draft you can only carry as many picks as you have list spots for. Stupid afl rule.

We can yes but if we dont take him at 40 and someone bids on him at 50 we have lost him because we dont have a third list spot (see st kilda and Hoffman).

The other day you said we wouldn't take a forward as we dont have a need.
And that got me thinking.

This draft is loaded with them. So let me be a bit crazy here.

We have a lack of collateral for Butters next year.
What if we think we're going to have to hand over a couple of small forwards and picks next year?

The forwards dont have to go to Port. But we might need the picks from elsewhere.

In that scenario, why not draft a forward this year?

Sure, there's a lot of 'what ifs'. But people are paid plenty of cash to be smarter than us.

Agreed. More than happy to have him, but would have a few ahead of him at 40. I'd take the risk.

Let's be real here, he's a solid talent who has some developable AFL traits, but would we be clamoring for him if he wasn't in our academy? I don't think so.

He'd just be another pretty good u18 talent we wouldn't mind having. We're not talking about an Ashcroft or Heeney here where you simply can't afford to let them slip through.
