Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn: Aidan Schubert

Tall forwards need to be able to do one thing well, and that is to mark the ball (buddy aside). Aiden Schubert has sticky fingers marks the ball like few others. Easily the best mark in the draft group and only comparable to Logan Morris in the last 2 years. As Brian Taylor states , "put your dukes out man", don't wait for the ball to come to you.

Schubert knows his hands are good and so preferentially takes the grab in his hands in front of himself. And I love that.

On to the other:
His kicking style is poor with a high ball drop and no guidance to the foot which will fail in bad weather.

He gives me Kirt Tippet vibes (not a bad person to be compared to) with a bigger engine and a higher competitive nature.

Welcome Aiden, you are on a list. Now the real work starts
His kicking style confuses me in that he does have a very iffy ball drop but from the footage provided he seems to make good contact and hit his targets / kick true for goal?

I do like his result in the 2km time trial though, that's a serious result for a guy his size and a great asset to possess as a key forward.

Fair summary.
At first look he's a bit raw, moves slightly awkwardly, and his ball drop worries me.
Then I read his incredible 2km time trial result, that he's only played 1 full season of football, and is 1 month away from being ineligible in this draft bc he was born so late in the year!

...and still considered the best KP forward prospect in this draft (not much competition for that title).
His rate of improvement and top-line potential are both tantalising.

He's a rough diamond for sure, but a worthy talent to speculate on.

He might surprise with his development like Mraz did.
Agreed on all points. He is easily the best mark of the draft class.

Mraz was likely not a surprise for the recruiters. The video which the armchair analysis (you and me) saw did not show how good he was at reading the play and taking a mark. But we have seen in his first year in the VFL, that kid may be the next Brian Lake.

I've spent more time than I care to admit trying and faling to find a Rachmaninoff pun.

But what I can say is Aidan Schubert's does have some big old hands capable of playing Rachmaninoff, unlike like his namesake Franz Schubert who could barely span an octave.
Every time I try to play pool with my friend group they spend more time mucking around rather than playing, especially when starting a new game. I have to tell them “Stop, just Rachmaninoff talking, more playing”

His kicking style will work well enough if there is no wind or pressure from an opponent. But not if either is put on him.

The kid is young. Spider Everrett was the best tall man who had a great kicking style. In essence, the time from hand to foot needs to be as short as possible. Look at Lindsey, the best kick from this draft. There is zero deviation possible in his ball drop. And that allows him to moderate his kick strength to hit targets between opposition players.

Schuberts ball drop invites imprecision. It is hard to replicate for accuracy in all circumstances and all situations.

Spider Everett had the best ball drop I have seen for a tall man. But this will not work for Aiden.

It will be interesting to see how he develops his kicking.

Excellent game sense for someone so inexperienced and under-developed, always looking to push the ball on and create an advantage.

Not afraid to stand up in a pack, and he sticks the marks on first grab.

He's quite decent when the ball is in play too.

I like this a lot.
Will be an excellent complementary duo with Dear.

Yeah, but there's a lot of smaller guys around him at the contest , he won't get taht at AFL level. We are stacked as much as if not more than any other clubs in the KP depth.

His kicking style can be fixed, remember Watson's first few games were awful because he didn't have any technique at all. Didn't take him long to get that sorted out, so I'm sure that

We can rebuild him. We have the technology. We can makes him better than he was. Better, stronger, faster.

You're about to blow our salary cap out of the water.

Sounds like RoboCop.

Just when we thought it couldn't get worse, H00t says "Holst my beer".

In Year 1 he learnt to run, in Year 2 playing the game he learnt to mark. Imagine what he will be able to do in a few more years. Great talent, excited to see him develop alongside Dear and Mraz. Opposition teams won't be able to get a mark in the forward or defensive 50.

Geez i really like this kid. Has every attribute to make it at the highest level. Sticky hands and Elite endurance for the youngest draftee in this class. Super excited!!!!!!!!. Essentially 2xTop 10 picks on Sleepys board at a guess. And grabbing 2 future 2s. Well played Hawks.

Looks like he's missing a thumb in the above pic but with hands as big as that 9 fingers will do 😂

Who knows, this Schubert may have bigger hands than Rachmaninoff. That would be fun. While playing the piano is awesome, Let's see is those hands will create a symphony of marks. 😜

His hands measured 10 Pittonets at draft camp and apparently are still growing.

Welcome to the Hawks young man!

We clearly didn’t draft him for 2026/2027 purposes.

In 2030 we will have bid farewell to at least 4 of our current talls.

That’s when he should come into his own.

Patience is a virtue.

Best of the lot.

Gold! How did this kid slip so far ….. given his year:

“Schubert had an outstanding season at club level, kicking 28 goals in 13 matches for Central District to win the SANFL U18 MVP Award.

He was also one of the stars in South Australia’s title-winning team at the National Championships, finishing fourth in the Larke Medal voting and earning All-Australian honours.”

He's gonna have to get stronger, obviously.
Main thing is his ability to hold the grab.
Project player mate.

If we can put 3 years into Ramsden and 9 years into Reeves, then we can be patient with this guy too.

Schubert playing against men. He looks pretty good to me.
