Give us examples of players that Austin could’ve picked up for a reasonable price in the last 2 off seasons? Bear in mind we’ve had a 2 time Coleman medallist in the forward line, and thought we had found our fix in the backline before he sooked it up and went to his dad at St Kilda
Rumours were around as early as April that Charlie wanted out, TDK leaving for a ridiculous contract was always on the cards from early in the season so Austin had at least 6 months to prepare for both these departures.

Silvagni was later but by mid season still unsigned and meeting with other clubs it was obviously a chance he would leave, again because it happened so early we had plenty of time to prepare for it.

As for players at a reasonable price he could have targeted to replace them he liked Khamis so get the deal done. Maybe target Gruzewski who could play either end or Max Ramsden from the hawks who is a better player than Hudson O’keffe their are plenty of cheap options choose one instead of loading up on slow small forwards who don’t kick goals or slow mids who lack the versatility to play a second position.

What we have done is left Weitering to be supported by Haynes a 34 year old undersized key defender who was very good last year, O’ffarrell a 19 year old who more than likely is out for the year with an acl, Dean an 18 year old draftee who at a well run club would be under no pressure to play senior football next year.

Then the likes of Young and McGovern both lucky to still be on an AFL list and Duffy an Irishman coming from a mile back.

At the other end end we have McKay supported by O’keffe who averages half a goal a game at reserves level and Kemp coming off the most serious injury a footballer can get and in no way should be rushed back to play. We had to get someone.

Might end up in the mid season draft once if there's an injury.
E H could. still get a rookie spot if he ticks off all the requirements that The Blues want him to prove ...IT'S MAKE OR BREAK FOR EH. .... I also hope he makes it back and doesn't look back because he is a rare Talent and a difference maker

Hey so with picking up three at the draft rather than two, does this mean that Elijah is done? What is our spot situation?
I'm also curious to know if it wasn't for Charlie leaving, who would have been on the table if we as a football club were already committed to taking Harry so early.

1 spot for SPP. Not sure who gets the train on spots. Will know in next few days.

If Charlie didnt go we would probably have split 9 for points for Dean. Then hoped Ison slid enough to match with late picks or gone into a slight deficit. Might not have matched a late 1st bid.

Probably dont pick up Ainsworth. Definately dont get Hayward. Might have gotten Florent.

Would have been stuffed as far as matching an early Walker bid next year, particularly if they change the rules. Reliant on Walsh and/or Curnow leaving next year.

In hindsight we really needed Curnow gone.

25 and under side:

Matthew Carroll - Harry Dean - Lachlan Cowan
Billy Wilson - Harry O'Farrell - Ollie Hollands
Sam Walsh - Jack Ison - Campbell Chesser
Matthew Cottrell - Brodie Kemp - Francis Evans
Taylor Byrne - Hudson O'Keeffe - Ashton Moir

Liam Reidy - Cody Walker* - Jagga Smith

Cooper Lord - Ben Camporeale - Lucas Camporeale - Jesse Motlop - Harry Charelson

So it looks like we picked up a few lefties. Couldn’t kick on my left but I do rate those that can.

Harry Dean - I played footy with his uncle, he went alright too, Harry looks to have a bit of go in him, nice intercept mark, let’s hope he wins a couple of premierships like lefty backman Vin Waite (although Sam Taylor is more my vintage and so would like him to replicate him)
Nickname - Jimmy, Sauce or Megs (I like this one - Ginger not the LA version)

Talor Byrne - Adrian Gallagher went alright as a lefty small forward, winning a few flags, before my time too, reminds me of Papley going at the ball, has the don’t argue, maybe he could be as good as Jeff Farmer
Nickname - Swifty, Wiz

Jack Ison - imagine if he was as good as Wayne Johnson (four flags not his nightclub record). I reckon we would be happy with that, might need the Dominator to head down and give the kid some angry pills, looks like a smooth mover with the ball, if we can get the ball to him then maybe he could be our Pendlebury
Nicknames - Bison, SoD (Son of Dad)

That's what I'm thinking. With Dean this year and needing the points for Walker next year how did list management expect to pull this off without Charlie wanting out? I believe we will have three top three picks three years running after Walker next year which is brilliant, but would we have been able to pull that off without Charlie leaving?

It's been a great off season. The football department looks very different on and off field. It's what was needed

List now has run and better ball use

We lack talls. IMO we are at least two short. In a 'reset" year that is okay. Not ideal, but okay. I was hoping we would take a tall in draft BUT if we don't rate them then you don't do it. We obviously didn't

I believe we need to take Phillips as rookie or SSP. It's just a need

New coaching group will really need to adjust game style with this group. Run, carry, control ball, move to right spaces, hit targets must be focus. We also need to play a lot of youth. Many in 2nd or 3rd pre seasons and need to play

I am really looking forward to next season

Yeah, shortage of genuine talls may add credence to Ben King free agency suggestions. Bloody good player, somewhat under rated in Victoria. I am confident with what a combo of O’Keeffe and Kemp can add to Big H, with ā€œcameosā€ from Moir and maybe Ison, but King is definitely class.

The Collingwood era Wright presided over was always seemingly under supplied with talls, perhaps is a philosophy of his.

Time will tell. I question both Kings mental strength. JMO

We need to be prepared for Kemp not playing for a while. Very slow recovery

Like you I am looking forward to McKay/O'Keefe combo and just as much mixing and matching our forward line. Hayward Moir Cripps Ison and our smalls if structured well and could be very dangerous

Ines will have his first full pre season after a season of assessment

Wright promised a lot and so far he has delivered

I’ll ask again - who could we have picked up?
I gave you 3 cheap options in my previous post but their are plenty more.

Khamis - Austin obviously likes him, prioritise him and get the deal done.

Ramsden- A better player than Hudson O’keffe.

Grewswski- would cost a little more but has the versatility to play both ends

There are plenty of others Henry smith, Liam McMahon they are not world beaters but provide structure, we could have prioritised these types rather than slow small forwards who don’t kick goals.

As of now the key position players we are going into next season are Weitering, McKay and Haynes tick.

O’ffarrell and Kemp both unlikely to play, Kemp maybe in the back half of the season.

Dean who turned 18 last week, we saw with weitering how long it takes for even highly rated key defenders to develop he should be under no pressure at all to even play a game next season look how the cats developed Conor O’Sullivan in his first season.

Young with his versatility I can see why we’ve kept him but we all know what he is.

McGovern extremely lucky to be on a list was free to go but no other club wanted him.

Duffy unlikely to play coming from a long way back.

O’keffe showed ok signs but averages half a goal a game at reserves level and has had some injury concerns.

We knew a long way before the trade period Curnow, Dekoning and Silvagni were leaving and had plenty of time to plan for replacements. As it stands we are ridiculously thin for Key position players.

2 firsts & 2 seconds in next years draft is a great starting point for us - gets lost a bit at this time of year but really great work from the list management team.

Being able to get Dean, Ison (who I am all on board with - but I was with Cunningham as well) and also Byrne is a great effort

I’ll ask again - who could we have picked up?

Anyone, JJ!

Don't you get it?! These players don't have a choice in the matter, nor do the clubs at which they are currently contracted.

Austin decides who he wants to recruit and that's that.

If Nick Austin decides he wants a player then he just needs to get the deal done otherwise he's a shit list manager.

As long as he doesn't overpay....if he overpays then he's an even shitter list manager for overpaying.

Or if he gets them for a reasonable deal and they turn out to be ordinary...then he's a shit list manager too.

And you might think that if he gets them cheap and they turn out to be ordinary that that's OK...IT'S NOT! He's just a shit list manager for wasting valuable list spots.
