Player Watch Pick #15 (2024) - Joe Berry

I say this once again, Berry should mold his game on Zac Bailey. Bailey isn't a crumbling small forward but gets himself in good spots and keeps himself busy.

Another good goal, there is hope yet. If he got a second he might has been worth a rising star nomination. Still can't help feeling we got a bad deal watching Reid on the other team, we would have had an extra pick if we chose the obvious option too. If only Reid looked a little more like Robbie Grey.

Reid will also move into the midfield longterm. Don’t know if Berry will end up doing that.

The point you make about the extra pick is important. When you look at the lack of talent we have in the bottom 6-8 players on our list, every reasonable draft pick in a strong draft counts.

You don’t need 18 players in the midfield though.

He’s a high half forward and if he can nail that position he will be worth his weight in gold

You’ve been asking to see glimmers of hope with Berry and I think we’re starting to see that now.

Let’s not forget he’s playing a difficult position on the ground, not some chip scab hbf

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. In another world, we keep that pick 40 whatever we traded up from Berry, get Reid with our 1st pick and then Dodson with pick 40ish. Would've given us some much needed ruck depth.

Nothing that we didn't say earlier though

last night made me a fair bit more comfortable with Berry after a quiet first year. i saw a bit in him in the pre-season internal (i think it was) and last night was the first time i saw that come out again.

appears a very different player to Reid. i haven’t read a lot about Reid’s long term positioning but he’s looked very good this year. that being said, not every player shows all their tricks in the first season, some are less physically ready to go - it doesn’t mean they can’t play, or that they can’t end up the better player. hopefully last night was the confidence boost he needs at the level.

He's going to be fine. Improved as the year went on.
Its very frustrating how the masses want to write him off after his first year.

Learning, body development etc isnt linear and comparing players after one season is folly

People put too much into the rising star award too. Yes, it can be an indication, but Lewis Taylor beat Bontempelli for the top gong, Sam Walsh beat out Zak and Connor, Jesse Hogan edged Patty Cripps etc..

Whilst Reid may well have a fine career, by no stretch does it make him the better pick already.

I will back the lad. He is our pick, & is now Port Adelaide! But .....

But what?

I literally just gave 3 examples (there are plenty more) where the better player overall in their career did not win the rising star.

Again, not guaranteeing that will happen in this case, but one swallow doesn't make a summer.
