Delisted Callum Ah Chee - Joins Adelaide via the PSD

When an established football state has to whine about non-football states developing better talent it's an indictment on them. WA only accounted for one draftee in the top 30 so I think I'm OK calling a strawman argument on this one. Flail around all you like but it's WA football that's broke, not the system. Collingwood and Geelong seem to do fine but I guess they don't have to travel much either.

Yep because your clubs get $60m between them to develop junior pathways, courtesy of the AFL, which they then get priority access to. WCE and Freo get $11m each, which they spend on operating costs. They then have to spend their own money on junior pathways, via the WAFC, and don't even get any form of access to most of the players because they don't qualify under the NGA rules the 14 non-northern clubs have to adhere to.

Collingwood and Geelong also do fine because again, the AFL funds junior pathways in Victoria, like they do in the Northern states.

I mean, you've every right to enjoy your club being successful, as manufactured as it is. Just don't try to bullshit everyone that it's because of how great your club is at making good decisions when it only turned around when the AFL took complete control and gave you unfair advantages.

Of course our success is due to being a competent well run organization. We're a great football club both on field & back of club.

You can be the richest club in the comp & still be a pathetic basket case due to incompetence & mismanagement.

Actually, the Lions go back to 1883 unlike the WCE, now there's a manufactured club, like the Crows. And you don't have to compete with an intrenched sport like the NRL, the Broncos have twice the wealth you have, and we have to take them on in an open market for talent. And you can't complain about access to talent when WA produces little at the moment. 1 draftee in the top 30, hell we picked the eyes out of WA players with Kobe and Cody, it's really why you are all offended isn't it. We drafted out of the WA pool better than you did. Overlooking a number of academy talents who were there for the taking.

Tbf Morris, lohmann and wilmot have been smart picks.*

*Again a lot easier to take “risks” at the draft with your actual open picks tho when you know youve got top 5 talents just waltzing through the door every year for sweet FA

If You want a true idea of how “accomplished Dom is at “building” a list check out his record at the Gold Coast before he joined brissie tho…. Handed top 10 picks on a platter (but there he still had to actually pick the players)- in which case he proceeded to balls up most of them.

His 2016 draft haul of 4 top 10’s was a particular highlight
Ah so naive. So let me educate you about Dom and his role as a list manager, He is not not the recruiter or draft selector. His job isn’t to sit at the table and call out names on draft night, it’s to keep the list together, manage contracts, negotiate trades, and ensure the club’s overall strategy is sustainable.

Recruiters are the ones tasked with identifying and selecting talent. Dom’s responsibility is to make sure those players are retained, the salary cap is balanced, and the list profile is built to contend year after year. Judging him on Gold Coast’s draft selections is missing the point, those picks weren’t his calls. What he has done at Brisbane is create the environment where smart recruiting decisions (like Morris, Lohmann, and Wilmot) can actually stick and flourish.

So if you want to critique draft choices, aim that at the recruiting team. If you want to talk about list stability, contract management, and building a contender, that’s where Dom’s influence is clear. Seven years contending, three grand finals, two premierships under his stewardship. I'll take that any day.

Was contract price or terms made public? Was the PSD contract just what the crows offer was initially or was it changed & front ended after the trade didn't happen to make him undesirable? Or is it all just between the clubs & AFL privately and no one knows?

Someone earlier in this thread posted the front loading part.
Apparently it was double his salary for first year to get him through PSD.

Can that be renegotiated now or is that set in stone for a set period before changes can be made?

If free agency contracts are any guide - I believe you have to honor what gets signed. Remember all the rumbling about Daniher contract, we still had to honor the payment set for first 3 years of free agency contract as signed.

After the trade fell through, Dom was on record saying that he hoped to re-sign Ah Chee.

How out of touch was he, given Ah Chee & his manager were clear he was leaving regardless. Dom badly misread the situation as he thought that he had a viable backup option.
He was just blissfully unaware of the situation unfolding.
He really wanted CAC to re-sign, and thought that if they made the trade too difficult he would come back. All that did was made him bitter and more determined to leave.
I would hate to be him answering to his boss about why they left a 2nd and 3rd round draft pick on the table.

He would've been given the ok to pursue it down this no trade/ re-signing path and while understanding it may as well lead to nothing in the end. Highly doubt its a one-man decision panel.

father sons are great, just because yours arent as good :)

imagine complaining about father sons when you have them on your list! its so embarassing
Marcus Ashcroft was effectively an academy player so it accounts to the same thing, so the boys are f/s of a zone access player

You guys are just the kings of handouts, aren't you?
It’s Port and Carlton’s turn to raid the handout bin over the next few seasons. While you’ve been busy rummaging the pre-season rorts, your neighbour’s already jumped the fence and soiled on your green lawn.

So go ahead roll out the welcome mat for Dougie, Salopek, Dean, Walker…

It would be like a Billionaire scolding his teenage son about money falling out of his pocket when Daddy keeps increasing his and his three brothers allowances anyway.

He would have had to of given the board some pretty good assurances that it would work out in Brisbane's favour. He either thought Adelaide would overpay, or that CAC would re-sign if it didnt go through for him to go down that line.
Im pretty sure if he had of said "Look, Adelaide arnt going to pay any more than this offer, and CAC will not re-sign with us if they dont and we will lose him via the PSD for nothing" then the board wouldnt have approved of going down that path. As we have been saying, he just didnt have a grip of the reality of the situation.
I would bet London to a brick if he could have his time again now, he would take those draft picks. Only an idiot of the highest order would lose CAC for nothing if they didnt have to.

Nah, Brisbane are so rich that they just didn't see the point in a future second.

It happens, Gold Coast's the same.
