I think its banking on potential more than specifics.

Obviously a good natural goal kicker but he has clear athletic ability and thats what Hamish would have seen. He was highly rated for a reason but because of his injuries his sample size dropped him down the order. He is green and I suspect he will be told that he has a lot of development KPIs to meet before he can realistically expect to get a game at AFL level.
We are probably best placed to develop a mobile tall forward of AFL the clubs, I look forward to see how he develops at SANFL

"Go stand next to Thilthorpe all summer. Then just do what he does. See you in 16 weeks, I got a flight to catch".

I really would be an excellent AFL coach.

Why do you think that, interested to hear why we’re best placed. He’ll be playing SANFL competing with 2 other tall forwards, Marsh and Welsh and likely a resting ruck. This will be an abnormal structure, not sure it’ll be prime development opportunity.

Personally I reckon Marsh will play off a wing in the 2s

Strachan is going around again in the SANFL, Maley too, Murray jr going to be the land of the giants if they all play. Two tall defenders added to the SANFL roster too WAFL's Tom Bell 197cm and former South defender Joe Haines 193cm.

I agree he’ll play some wing, but reckon they’ll be focussed on his forward movements given Tex is in his final year. If he hits the ground running I wouldn’t be surprised if he covers Tex’s rests next year. It’s for that reason I reckon he’ll play ahead of the ball a fair bit.

To argue against my earlier post, I wonder if Murray might get some time behind the ball.

A couple of reasons, first we have the best forward line up in the AFL, or at least top 3. We have a track record of getting the most out of our forwards, Thilthorpe's development has been outstanding, but even what we got out of McGovern and Himmelberg was better than their ability.
Rankine has come back and become a star, Rachele is powering along, we have got more out of Keays than Brisbane did, who failed at turning him into a forward, and ANB is probably more of a mentor than success story.
We have a super experienced Walker who thrives taking the younger ones under his wing, and Fogarty is a quieter leader but nonetheless a leader.
You mentioned the SANFL forward line, which clearly a different team, but the training is the whole group, where skills are honed. I also don't see the forwards as competing (Welsh, Ludowyke and Maley), but more working together just as they would have to if playing AFL.
We also have a damn good defense, so training against Keane, Butts, Murray and Worrel must be bloody tough, but also a good learnign ground. I wonder if Worrel and Keane et al themselves actually got a heap better playing on Walker and Thilthorpe for the past 5 years.

If Ludowyke was training with North as their 50th pick in the draft, I would not be as confident that the system would be in place for his development, I'm not sure anyone would. I'm sure there's a few teams environments that he'd do well in, Geelong, Sydney, etc, but I just think we are as good as any of them, if not the best placed.

I also agree that Marsh is not a forward, perhaps a forward flank, and while he can kick goals from 55 he should be lowering his eyes and looking for Ludowyke as he plays higher up - we'll see on that though. I'd be surprised if Marsh played much if at all this year, I reckon Maley is Walkers ready made fill in - its the kind of move a team expecting to make finals would make.
