Even though im backing JSoS to be injured when its the stains turn to play us, walsh will get a sign of things to come if he leaves, when both tdk and jsos cops the absolute mothers off all abuse during that upcoming game.
He wont like what he will see me thinks
Hopefully we can come up with better reasons for players to stay at Carlton than this smh

Yep. JSOS and TDK will give zero ****s about getting booed once or twice a year against their former club. Same goes for Charlie Curnow. Same goes for Sam Walsh if he leaves.

Unfortunately, the reality is that players leaving for more money will be a thing forever . Love for the club and jumper is diminishing in this AFL environment.

Just a random question (after looking at our rising star thread), but what is the average age (and games played) by our players, and how does this compare to others sides? Thanks in advance to anyone who can answer this

Player total: 43 (includes Cat-B)

Average age: 24.7

Average games Played 78.9

Don't have the data for other sides sorry.

Also, have to say, I have more faith in Bletch's stats above. Also, Bletch's graph gives a better indication where various ages sit on the average....
Edited with a graph for games played.

Possible I've made an error, but I don't think so. Perhaps Draftguru isn't including Cat-B?

Draftguru typically picks a date in April for that year and bases the statistics off that, which is probably why the average ages is 0.4 of a year more on their site.

Based on Moir (15th April 2005) being listed as 21 and Chesser (27th April 2003) being listed as 22, the date Draftguru picks is within that two week range.

This is consistent for all the teams too, so the data is still comparable across teams.

But they aren't leaving for more money.

They are leaving for success and because we haven't given them enough reasons to stay.

It's hard to talk about loyalty to the jumper after Walsh himself took less money on his last contract to 'help keep the team together' then watched the club unceremoniously dump all our depth (and his mates) and end up with a thin and uncompetitive list. He's also watched the club sack a coach 6 months into his career, then the next one two years later, and we could well be onto a fourth at some point this year. The guy who drafted him, a club legend, got sacked 12 months later and hasn't been back to the club since. All of the players from his draft class have been delisted except for him. We have had two fitness guys in his time and sacked both. Even the President got sacked for putting his junk on social media. Meanwhile, he's seen the 'fans' line the player race to hurl abuse at players during a bad game on multiple occassions, seen the way they social media turns on stars like Docherty as soon as their form drops off (coming back from an ACL no less, but that didn't get him any slack). There's no loyalty at Carlton.

If, as seems likely, we drop further off the pace this year, sack another coach and head deeper into the draft, why would Walsh stay? He has been at the club 7 years so far, has never been in a team that won 14 games, and we are likely starting again with another coach and a bunch of young guys he barely knows?

If Geelong come knocking and offer him good money, a chance at success and a house and land package near Torquay, of course he will listen.

About the only thing we can offer other than actually playing some improved footy is the captaincy, which I guess isn't nothing.

TDK and Silvagni left for no other reason than they got offered more money. Curnow, for all the furore about wanting a change of scenery left for Sydney where he got an extra year on his existing contract, in the words, he left for extra money.

The Walsh scenario you have outlined above is pure speculation. The same speculation that surrounded Cripps except he chose to stay. Ditto Weitering and McKay. I firmly believe we’ve weeded out the right players who needed to go.

Looking to next year, draft, free agency or trade, the two things we don't have on the list is a young genuine KPF, and young defensive 3rd tall, the jury is still out on some of our young half backs and young small forwards.
We have midfield depth and walker next year, and our wings and hf seems pretty stacked, and we have got 2 good young KPD so it seems
Our list shape is in a pretty good spot I think, just gotta keep building and tweaking
Go blues

Granted we need a young ā€œgenuineā€ key forward in the foreseeable future on face value. (It could be argued that Kemp can become a genuine prime target) There is little urgency to this providing most of our boys stay fit. We do need an option in the seconds to provide a comparable structure for the developing youngsters. O’Keeffe combined with third talls like McGovern and Moir ensure there is no immediate requirement, but we absolutely to invest in that area, ideally in the next two drafts. We also have Jack Ison who is already 192cm and a chance to be deployed as a third tall forward if we don’t develop him immediately as a mid. With that mix, we may be able to put off big investment in tall forwards until (hopefully) Lukas Koutoufides steps up as a genuine option (a ruck/forward or a swingman type may be better investment)

Young defensive 3rd tall? Nah. We have a stalwart KPD among the best in the competition. Despite O’Farrell being down for the majority of the year, he and Dean are both genuine KPD prospects who both have pace and can double as genuine interceptors. We still have Haynes and indeed McGovern as veteran 3rd talls along with Carroll who is 190cm, maybe taller and Cowan who can play tallish. Getting our group of young medium defenders up to speed and possibly upgrading the distribution if they don’t step up in that area is the defensive need. A genuine tall swingman type to assume the Lewis Young role would be great investment though.

We now have a host of ā€œhybridā€ forwards with Moir, Hayward and possibly/probably Elijah. Williams and Frankie arguably are more mediums. Ainsworth will quickly become a favourite given ā€œfreedomā€ as a forward/mid. Motlop and Byrne should provide some attacking flair. Cottrell and Flynn Young are both forward who can play wing and we have Fogarty there to play his customary role if called upon.

With Cody Walker who can be labelled a breakaway mid headlining our next draft, we will be wanting for little. Perhaps a watch on the effectiveness of Pitto and Reidy in the ruck with O’Keeffe repurposed. A young athletic or uber tall ruck may become a need. In fairness, the age of Pitto, nearly demands it.

We are entering an era of drafting genuine best available, which would be a luxury after spending a decade of playing catch up.

If Walsh has not signed by the beginning of the season, we all know how this will play out

I don't agree with this at all.
Given how his last 2 years have gone, dramatically impacted by his back injury, and the Club's disastrous 2025 followed by massive Football Department and list change, I wouldn't be expecting a contract before mid-year.

It wouldn't make sense for either party before then.

I have no doubt clubs are chasing him and offering large deals. We are apparently in "discussions" to tie him up

What happens if he breaks down again? Do we still pay him a large contract or let him go? I doubt he would stay for much less than is offered elsewhere

Walsh is also extremely driven to win. If we are struggling by mid year I can see him leaving

Walsh is a massive watch for me and I have no idea how it will play out

You don't make walsh captain if there is any chance he is not with Carlton in 2027. If he is captain 2026 and leaves 2027, what message does it send.to the list?

Regarding Walsh,

It is up to the club to create an environment where Walsh wants to stay. Since September, Carlton has forged ahead with employing a much stronger football department. Probably the most significant signings re: football dept this millennium.

My glass of water might be half full but I think that we will see a greatly improved team in 2026. The trade period was solid, the draft selections were methodical and disciplined. All the planning since the 'Reign of Wright' has been top notch and comparable to elite organisations.

If we are a professional organisation and Walsh can see a bright future, he will stay. If we don't improve he will leave.

That's fair enough too.

I really don't care who leaves or stays.
As long as the club has some warning to plan ahead, and we get well compensated with draft picks or players of need.

Not sure if we predicted losing Charlie, SOS and TDK in 1 off season, but the compo was pretty fair.

If Walsh is having itchy feet, then communicate that to the club.

If Walsh does leave please just not Geelong please. I can see us matching and Mackie offering us a packet of chips šŸ˜‚

Andrew Mackie is the biggest FIGJAM list manager in the competition and that’s saying something with SOS around. The way he was all nose in the air and strutting around as soon as a camera was on him during the trade period was giving me some serious second hand embarrassment.

The funny thing is that a fit and firing Batman and Robin combo of Crippa and Walshy is still the best duo in the league....

Which of the three that left this year are not on bigger contracts next year?

A little concerned with the carefree nature and the growing of the locks, no idea what he’s thinking about his contract with the hippy vibe…

If his demeanour is anything like when he reappeared at the end of ā€˜25, I want to see that (bearing fitness/availability mind you) on display F/T. Game & player leadership in spades with some outstanding football. Good for player, team and club and wins will hopefully be a byproduct and re-signing.
