Winner gets the better pick? Or loser?

If loser gets the better pick, will be a week of most obvious tanking you’ve ever seen.

If the winner (aka the better team) gets the better pick, you’re punishing bad teams. West Coast won 1 game for the entire year. They were the worst team in modern history. Why should they have to beat Richmond who won 5 games to get the number 1 pick?

All that happens is every team will lose against the better team, and get 1 less pick spot to improve the next year.

Richmond beat West Coast by 50 points in round 19. Any situation where they don’t get the number 1 pick is a broken system.

Increase the stakes further

The winning team gets pick 1, but the losing team gets no first round pick at all

I think you would see very, very different list management and squad selection throughout the season if by finishing bottom 2 there was a chance you don't get a draft pick. Teams would be desperate to be good and win, whereas right now the bottom sides are content to rebuild and suck for years

Just imagine the stakes on a game where at the end of the season if you fall into bottom 2 zone your entire shit season could be wasted by not getting a pick. And then the playoff game itself to avoid that situation... would be immense and soul crushing for the shitty losing team

We don't blindly award the premiership to the team who win most games. We qualify teams for the right to play for the championship.
My scenario is exactly the same but at the opposite end of the ladder.

So why do we even have finals at all? Using your flawed rationale, the best (or worst) team has already been decided through the season.

There are two reasons only why we have finals. They're also perfectly connected to each other.

Firstly, professional sport is based on the money an audience is willing to pay to be entertained. Just like dancers, actors and circus clowns, people who watch the entertainment pay for it. Finals add intense games at the end of a season which creates an eager audience. The more eager the audience the more they will pay. Supply and demand 101.

Secondly, and linked precisely to the first point is the theatre of a sudden death scenario. It's the tension, the ruthlessness, the agony of losing when so close to glory. That's what a final means. It's ecstasy or agony...and these two are highly addictive to the human psyche. And its because of that, the reverse finals bring all that drama to life with every team getting one last chance for some form of success.

I think there's an audience for that...who will cheer for their team as they farewell the season...and they'll pay for the privilege too.

I don't think teams are content to rebuild and suck for years, rather it is out of necessity because well, they suck... Or in some cases the writing is on the wall that they are about to start a slow and painful descent into sucking so they decide to get a jump on the process by cleaning house. But either way, a team sucking and needing to rebuild is an inevitability at some point for everyone (well for the most part - I'm sure Geelong may get there one day). Sometimes it's truly luck of the draw as to how long this process takes, and to then implement something like this that some people seem to be in favour of would be crippling.

I know half of the time it's tounge in cheek because people love to kick other clubs while they're down, but I don't really understand the illusion that teams are happy to rebuild for years because they aren't desperate to be good or win and need to be punished. Especially when all involved are at constant risk of losing their job, not to mention losing out on relevancy and accolades, by sucking.

Which player in the AFL would be most likely to be caught watching pr0n during a team meeting?
Is this gonna be a poll

Can anyone explain why Port get access to Cochrane despite him seemingly not residing in an NGA zone?

Since when did Port get access to indigenous players in Metro zones? I’m looking at Twomey’s article today and see no changes that suggest Woodville is a zoned area.

What am I missing here? (And no, Port fans need not come here and try to justify it). Did a rule change?
You’re missing the fact that Port fans are the most fickle sports fans in the world. 2 seasons in a row out of finals and their crowd will drop dramatically . 5 years out and they will cover more seats with tarps than bums.
It’s a very thinly veiled leg up for nothing.

Exactly. It's a 'soft' assistance package.

The AFL are constantly pulling levers to massage things. Us getting a first rounder for Doedee after the goal umpire mistake was an example.

If he gets bid on in the first round they likely won't get another first rounder in, like clubs in the past have been able to achieve.

So it's not an out and out extra pick assistance package, just a little bit of manipulation by the AFL to sell some hope.

Let’s not get it twisted
All clubs would offer 3 first round picks to grab Dougie in the open pool.
He would receive JHF level pick 1 offers if not more

Crows included

It’s a massive win for Port

3 first rounders? Holy moley.

It's a long way out, but I'll play along. If he is a pick 1 and say Power naturally finish the season with pick 5, they'll be able to move up to pick one.

That's the 'soft' assistance package you've received. It's not like you'll be able to squeeze another first round pick in before he's bid on, like other clubs have been able to do.

As much as I hate your club, I'm fine with this assistance package and if we were in your position, I'd hope we would get something similar, everyone else gets it.

They'll do what everyone else does. Trade their pick 5 for a first round pick in the next year + a late first rounder this year (or early second rounder) some other picks for this year that noone cares about, but add up to enough points. Free player with the points from 84000 third round picks all packaged together, you move a bit back in the order but you get another pick the next year.

Make out like bandits on that one.

Sadly for them there are changes to the bid matching process next year. I'd be surprised if they get two first rounders out of this.

Playing Sanfl level before his draft year is a pretty good achievement. Does suggest he is likely to go pretty well in the draft unless he has a huge form slump.

I was talking to a mate whose a Port fan the other day and we both agreed that Carr was going to conduct a full rebuild and thats the reason why they didnt take any players in the draft. He wants to play everyone and audition players for 2027.

Im in the camp for Port to trade out Butters. They will at the very least get the number one pick in the draft through the compensation mechanism of FA or they will get two top 10 picks for him easy in the trade period. So essentially they could get the number one pick plus Cochrane and maybe more first rounders to kick start a nice rebuild.

Its going to be a long rebuild for them. Letting Butters go though will give them some great long term stability to build around.
