Playing Sanfl level before his draft year is a pretty good achievement. Does suggest he is likely to go pretty well in the draft unless he has a huge form slump.

I was talking to a mate whose a Port fan the other day and we both agreed that Carr was going to conduct a full rebuild and thats the reason why they didnt take any players in the draft. He wants to play everyone and audition players for 2027.

Im in the camp for Port to trade out Butters. They will at the very least get the number one pick in the draft through the compensation mechanism of FA or they will get two top 10 picks for him easy in the trade period. So essentially they could get the number one pick plus Cochrane and maybe more first rounders to kick start a nice rebuild.

Its going to be a long rebuild for them. Letting Butters go though will give them some great long term stability to build around.

If they finish bottom, why wouldn't they just not match and get pick 2 compo?

Unfortunately for the Power, firsts will be at a premium next year before Tasmania come in. If Butters is out of contract and wants to leave he can and he'll get to where he wants.

I'd love to see him leave, low probability they get anyone at his level with the pick/s they get for him.

Also, Carr isn't coming in and trying to finish bottom for draft picks, you can't really believe that.

No he wont tank. But it is incredibly odd that they just upgraded rookies on a list with minus zero depth meaning they have to take in D grade players into their best 23. I suspect they are putting all their eggs into the 2026 off season to get the best drafting position prior to Tasmania draft concessions in 2027. So I would not be surprised at all if they finish in the bottom 4 next year, look to trade Butters for two top 10 picks, even use some future firsts to buy their way into the top end of the first round. Only so much they can do though in one hit. I wonder if they will end up merely falling into the trading strategy again.

They'll do what everyone else does. Trade their pick 5 for a first round pick in the next year + a late first rounder this year (or early second rounder) some other picks for this year that noone cares about, but add up to enough points. Free player with the points from 84000 third round picks all packaged together, you move a bit back in the order but you get another pick the next year.

Make out like bandits on that one.

Changes mean no discount and can only use two picks to match now. Won’t be nearly the steal it was this year and years prior.

They’ll end up using their Butters picks. Cochrane is going to have to be amazing to be worth Butters.

Weren't the Butters picks meant to be for NWM?
They only have 1 first round in 2026, 2 second rounds as well as only 1 first in 2027.
They want the Coch, NWM and Pilot all in the next three years and other than Butters they have no trade capital - this is going to be an interesting watch.

That's not how it will work from 2026 onwards.

The time to rebuild before Tasmania come in has passed. You can't do it all in 1 off season, especially when clubs will be valuing first round picks highly.

Yep, they should have traded Butters this year and maximise the return (2025, 2026 first round picks).

Tarps will be coming out next year.

Wrong.
They upgraded rookies because they have mature bodies and can play at AFL level immediately unlike draftees at the later picks they held who wouldn't be anywhere near AFL ready. You saw how few players went in the rookie draft indicating there weren't even mature agers to get too excited about.

All their eggs are in the 2026/2027 draft baskets (Father/Sons/NGA Cochrane/Salopek/Rodan/Pilot) and a futile effort to retain Butters.

This guy uses an example of Cochrane getting a super high bid at 2 and the Power matching with picks 6 and 24. This would also put the Power into deficit in the first round for 2027.

New rules haven't been announced, but this is roughly what I was thinking.

They'll likely get him but it won't be the out and out freebie like other clubs have had. It's more about the symbolism of selling hope, which I'm fine with considering all the other manipulations the AFL have going on.

I don't like teams being allowed to go into deficit.

If you don’t have the pick, you can't get them.

I don’t mind it too much, as long as the deficit goes into the round the player is taken. So if someone goes pick 2, the deficit goes into the next year’s first rounder, but maybe with a loading to reflect the lower value of later years picks.

They are stuck in a hard place like we were with Danger. Try to use the last year to persuade a new contract deal or trade him not knowing if you had kept him he might have signed on. Sliding doors. That might be us in a couple of years with Curtin. Who knows

Done deal: Mac Point stadium secures majority support in Legislative Council
https://www.themercury.com.au/journalists/david-killick
An order to build the Macquarie Point stadium on Hobart’s waterfront is set to pass the Legislative Council after a majority of members indicated they would vote in support.
The government’s final bid to win approval to construct the $1.13bn stadium is being debated in the upper house.
It needs to secure the votes of eight members in order to pass. Member for Montgomery Casey Hiscutt was the latest to indicate his backing on Wednesday afternoon.
Three Liberal and two Labor members of the upper house have indicated they will vote ‘yes’, in line with their parties’ policy platforms.

Great news for the Crows

The Tasmanian team will shift the balance of power in the AFL slightly further away from Victoria

The team's entry and draft concessions will also coincide with our peak as a team, helping to keep rebuilding clubs down and away from us

It won’t shift anything whilst the AFL control the 4 franchises in Qld and NSW plus Port.

Yeah - it was always going to get through. Follow the money.

No way it gets built on time, but will be huge lift for the city … and a massive cost for the state.

Almost everyone agrees it’s a strange thing to build a luxury beach house while your household budget is struggling to pay the mortgage and you are hoping no one needs medical care!

The weird argument that it will break the beautiful look of the waterfront is hilarious … apart from the fact that NO ONE goes near that area now, MacPoint is, and has been for a long time, an eyesore of a piece of land. It won’t bother the Cenotaph… it won’t ruin any historical landmarks … I think it will look pretty good actually.

Now it’s approved, we all hope it brings enough to the state to justify itself. I’m happy to get AFL proper down here, wary of what it might cost us … but I was always tipped towards the yes side. I can’t stand the NO argument based on fear of change.

Time to push ahead, Hobart will be better for it - hopefully Tasmanians will too!!

Tasmania with that stadium will all of a sudden become a destination state. It was a no brainer. Sure big upfront cost but the economic benefits will more than cover it.

Rubbish

It attracts .9% of the annual visitor numbers

NSW , QLD and Victoria make up 84% of visitors

Comparative to size and population, i know plenty of people who've been to Tassie... multiple times.

Granted the stadium is going to help, but to say its not somewhere that people dont go already is well..... rubbish.
