Do you think the average Tasmanian was asked if they wanted to spend $1.5B on a stadium for this purpose before the bid was submitted?

And given how it's dividing the Tasmanian community, couldn't the AFL go "hey, sure, you said that, but really, you can't afford it, your team can play at Bellerive, where we've played AFL games for the last 20 years"?
Oddly enough, there was an election held this year.

There were plenty of "No" candidates. So they could have been supported. Not enough were, and it cost some of them their job.

So all Tasmanians were asked to build or not build it.

If you put a bid in at an auction, you don't then get to start trying to adjust your bid once you've been declared the winner.

It's as simple as that.

If Tasmania didn't want to build that stadium, their bid shouldn't have included it.

Can someone tell me anything about Tasmania, you know, where it is, what is their culture like, do they speak English?

I just worry that a nation so different from ours just won't fit in the AFL.
The Island was settled by the Dutch so I believe they make good beer. Might be worth the trip for that alone.

Honestly I can’t believe the advantage this new team will get in the AFL. Brisbane and the Gold Coast have an advantage playing in warmth and dew. Perth doesn’t get freezing either in winter so another advantage. Sydney plays on a small ground so yet another advantage given to these nasty expansion teams.

Now this new team gets a whole State to themselves with an enclosed roof protecting them from a nasty Tasmanian winter.

Won’t someone think of the poor Victorians? Please I beg you. They get no home ground advantage at their enclosed stadium since it’s 50/50 and no advantage at the other ground because nobody turns up when their team is rubbish or they have to play a home game against Collingwood who outnumber them all.

I can’t believe the AFL did this to the Victorians.

Let it all out. Go tassie

Not every state can be built on a sand dune full of iron ore.

There's a massive difference here. It's not like someone else was bidding for a licence that was up for sale.

The AFL are insisting Tasmania spend huge amounts of money to get a team that they don't have. But if Tassie doesn't, it's not like the licence is being given to the next bidder.

And even if it was, the AFL are insisting on a divisive massive project that will wreck the state's finances when they don't have to. They could lift that requirement today if they wanted to.

All this talk about needing a new stadium yet people forget they are still going to play 4 home games in Launceston every year.
That’s the same as the Bulldogs having home stadium at Docklands, but still play 2-3 games at places like Ballarat against the lesser supported teams.

(Or in reverse, Geelong getting a free stadium yet still playing home games at the MCG?)

No one is forgetting. It’s called economics.

Isn't this just a cut and paste of the same things said prior to the Adelaide oval upgrade the the building of Perth Stadium?
