I make about 7k a year off refereeing. Could do more but still play veterans and are a club administrator so don't have time.

Up to 18k can be earned as a hobby without being classed as income at all.

There's no limit on income if it's genuinely a hobby. It's more about how regularly you do it. Eg if you occasionally sell a painting for 30k then it's hobby income. Or spend 2 years renovating a car for 50k profit. If you regularly ref 8 games a week for 10k then the ATO might be looking to add that to your personal income. You might be mixing it up with the tax-free threshold ($18,200) which applies to normal personal income.

Anyway, good on you for reffing and helping with your club admin.

As Frank says, I don't think that's right lol. If it's regularly earned it's income, regardless of it being a 'hobby' or not. I might consider working in a bar a fun hobby because it's infrequent and not my main job but the ATO wouldn't take my word for it.
