Just to be consistent can we now start a thread on players of Italian descent and their behaviour patterns. Its like a groundhog day around here.

What Stereotype do I get? South African mother English father. Moroccan, English, Rhodesian and French grand parents, go back one more generation and you can throw in Belgian and German - Marxist exile and Jewish.

Being indigenous cannot be used as a basis to excuse it.

It's not a matter of excusing it, it's a responsibility to work harder on indigenous players if issues arise for their sake and the clubs. It's a win win for the club and player if they can turn a person like him into a better human. Displacement and the introduction of a capitalist society is why they are in the position they are, that's why they have so many support mechanisms these days, it's the least that can be done to right the wrongs that have occurred over history. Whether we like hearing it or not, majority of the indigenous communities shortcomings are a direct result of poor upbringings due to their displacement.

I'm sorry but the previous indiscretions of Taylor's are not even worthy of mentioning.

It wouldn't have been a poor message at all. It would have been admirable for the club to play a hand on setting him straight, especially if it ended up working out and Taylor became a better person as a result of that effort. I fail to see how that outcome would be in any way a negative or bad look. And if it still didn't work out, then he'd be out the door and the end result would've been no different anyway.

It is what it is anyway, what happened happened it's been done to death, everyone has drawn their opinion on the matter.

Finally realised that Tom Silvagni was the person convicted last week for rape , dumb####

You think being accused, found guilty and convicted of raping someone is dumb ? That's not dumb its despicable, disgusting, reprehensible or any other words that fit the crime. Dumb is not one of them.
Dumb is when Matt Roberts grabs the ball in defense, panic kicks it into the arms of an opposition and watches it sail back over his head through the goals.

Unfortunately St Kilda aren't in a position to pass any sort of judgment down onto Stephen Silvagni, given their senior coach sexually harassed a female staffer and is still in the job.

I imagined putting myself in the position of the Silvagnis as parents.

If (and I acknowledge I don't know the full story) I, as a parent, genuinely believed my child was innocent, I'd likely have done the same thing.

I actually feel sorry for Steve & Jo. As parents, they'd be going through hell through no fault of their own.

And they had someone tampering kids in the little league , one of went on to play at the top level and they are doing nothing about it and they know it happened , they are a disgrace . The same person was a teacher and did it at his school as well

Either the Tasmania Devils will enter the league in 2028, or the entire medicant state will go into administration. Impossible financials with the planned new stadium.

Something's has to give down there. Guess who will pick up the tab.

Where will their people (staff/administrators/coaches/players) live? (housing shortage).

Its a weird mix, but fascinating - Kray brother connections, a past Olympian, concert pianists at the Royal Albert Hall, but it's the name changes that are blocking quite a bit. On a boat in Hamburg under one name, arriving in London on a totally different one. Every single passenger did it. I'd love to get to the bottom of that one.

Anyway, back on topic... ish. I don't think anyone should underplay the effect connection has on Aboriginal people. What white colonials did to them is just disgraceful. And a lot of people seem to think it was something that happened hundreds of years ago, direct off the boat, so it's ancient history and they shoukd get over it.... It's not an old story, some of the most destructive things happened in this lifetime. That's a fact.

Yes, taking on an aboriginal draftee might be considered more 'risky' but the grace, fluidity and fun they bring to the game is worth it. the awareness in player welfare is also a bazillion miles from where it was a couple of decades ago. in reality, we should be good enough and prepared enough to make their heritage a non-factor, that's on the club.

As this post is likely headed for the dumpster bin, I'll keep going. I might be first generation Australian, but the country gets inside you. The power and energy in the Australian natural landscape is immense. I have lived in Europe the last 10 years, but there isn't a day my mind doesn't wander back to Australia. Lost connection is a thing.

It's certainly a sad situation for them, but relative to the overwhelming majority of other convicted rapists' parents, they could have it worse. Their privilege and status in society affords them a degree of sympathy and compassion that most parents of rapists do not get. That so much of the discourse I have seen has been, "They must be devastated, what went wrong with Tom?", where in so many other cases it's "they're a monster, lock them up" I think speaks to how class still plays such a large role in how these cases are framed.

And you might say "well they are high-profile parents whereas other parents of rapists are not", but it is that very high profile, and privilege, and wealth, that has gotten plenty of others in a similar standing in society off, and it could still get Silvagni a much more lenient sentence than he probably deserves.

I actually see it the other way around.

The parents of most convicted rapists aren’t plastered all over every media site in Australia. News Corp in particular has chosen to go to town on the couple - because of who they are.
