I absolutely do not see this as anything but pandering to US and Israeli reactionaries.

It doesn't even work with the former or broader Coalition base I'd imagine.

There is overwhelming support for equality and anti-hate speech laws when it comes to say those with disabilities, LGBTQ+ individuals and so on.

Likewise, for better or worse universalism is a deeply held public value. Whether that causes issues for things like Voice or proper steps towards federal reconciliation when certain actors lead dishonest public campaigns, when it is of benefit, like marriage equality, or in this case I'd suggest, when it comes to special or unique carvouts for antisemitism only.

There is zero chance changes to hate speech laws etc. would have the backing of voters, were they not to apply to and protect the wellbeing of all religions and minority groups equally. The suggestion to exclude many groups who also suffer current and historic violence, threats or intimidation is not just absurd and offensive, but grotesque in the most cynical and dare I say moronic way.

And who is the source for most of this article? The former secretary of the Federal Home Affairs department, Mike Pezzullo.

The disgraced former top public servant who was sacked by Albanese after an independent inquiry found he had breached the Public Service Code of Conduct. Specifically, the inquiry found he used his position for personal advantage, broke confidentiality, failed to act apolitically, and didn’t disclose a conflict of interest.

The Inquiry found he was in frequent secret communication with Liberal insider, Scott Briggs, who was close to prime ministers Scott Morrison and Malcolm Turnbull. In those texts Pezzullo inserted himself into the political process, lobbying for his personal interests.

In the past three weeks Pezzullo has been used as by SkyNews and other branches of the Murdoch media empire to provide 'expert' comment on the Federal Government's failure to call a Federal RC.

The use of a tragedy by the Murdoch press to platform the views of persons with a partisan political agenda that coincides with their own continues.

She has set out her basic demands for that federal Royal Commission as follows:

1. The terms of reference for a federal Royal Commission MUST include radical Islam and far-left Neo-Nazi extremism

2. There MUST be at least 3 Royal Commissioners including a Jewish expert on anti semitism

3. Ms Jillian Segal's position as Special Envoy to Combat Antisemitism in Australia MUST be made permanent.

Pretty clear that reluctantly agreeing to a federal RC is just going to set in train a new set of ideological political battles for the PM and his government.
