I do not think it is possible for a tall forward, tall backman or ruckman to ever win a Brownlow again. If anyone could do it, I think it would be a ruckman/forward like a Sam Darcy but I doubt it.

Luke Jackson could as a Adam Goodes like utility.

It was possible until the umpires became hopelessly obsessed with midfielders to the exclusion of all other positions (and I am excluding rucks from midfielders).

Is it possible for a pure back man to win the Brownlow? No

Dominant backs or forwards can be to an extent taken out of the game if they're TOO dominant.

Guys like Tom Stewart get tagged or doubled.

Key forwards will get doubleteamed...or a loose man will stand in their space.

Mids get tagged, but it's still at most times a 1-1 contest.

When you needed 20-21 votes, it was possible (7 bags of 6/7 goals could get you there)
Now 39 and 45 votes? A forward would need to kick 200 to get close.

To me a key forward should be getting votes if they kick 4 or more goals in a match. 4 goals in a match is fairly hard, and 24 points is likely a big chunk of a teams overall score. Harder to kick 4 goals than it is to get 32 disposals and 5 clearances or whatever.

He wouldn’t be in the top 1000 big men ever to play the game, let alone win a Brownlow.
He’s 24 200cm
He got 17 votes (4x3 votes) in 2025
The thread title mentions is it possible not he will.
If he matures and plays his best more often than not in a top 4 side it’s definitely possible.

It’s not the umpires that are hopelessly obsessed.

The last 21 AFLPA MVP winners have been midfielders.

20 of the last 21 AFLCA MVP winners have been midfielders (Gawn won it in 2018).

True, but this thread asks the question about whether someone other than a mid can win the Brownlow, which is what I addressed.

It's a midfielders medal. Would need to kick 100 goals in the season to have a chance.

And how close did Gawn go in 2018? I almost feel that ruckman should be more likely than key forwards as they are also in the umpires face. But not sure if any of the recent history has had a ruck man poll well in the brownlow

In recent memory, the closest a tall got to the Brownlow was Buddy Franklin in 2014.

He polled 22 votes in 19 games and was the runner up.

That was a year where Ablett was running away with it until he did the shoulder that kept him out for a third of the year.

Fyfe was suspended and ineligible, and the eventual winner was Matt Priddis of all people.

Hopefully if the umpires see the stats, they will appreciate how much they have contributed to the game

Luke Jackson will this year.
