I’d wager that the Jewish community don’t want to “whack Albo’s Labor govt”, but don’t want him and his crew (or the State Governments) to be free of criticism.

All governments of all levels and whatever political persuasion were quick to denounce antisemitic attacks (threats, graffiti, arson, vandalism and ultimately terrorism), but few have made efforts to proactively highlight the issues and educate against it.

I can’t recall how bad it was here for the Islamic community here post 9/11, but it definitely wasn’t as horrific and concentrated as against the Jewish community here post October 7.

Albo setting up the RC is a sign of strength, not weakness. I think he needs to confront his shortcomings as a leader. I believe that he thinks that if he is a decent bloke whose heart is in the right place (and I believe he does) then that’s good enough. But when things were running away and escalating like it did with this bout of antisemitism, we needed stronger leadership/addresses from leaders and even a national advertising campaign.

In the last 10 years, there have been multiple incidents of racist graffiti against Muslims, a mosque was firebombed, following the Hamas attacks on October 7 there was an increase in attacks on property, threats of gun violence and spitting on women, and an Australian neo-nazi moved to New Zealand and murdered 51 Muslims in their church. Just because very few people give a shit about attacks on Muslim people and the mainstream media is telling you attacks on Jewish people are unprecedented, there is actually an equivalency here.

i was watching a bit of the tennis yesterday - Marta Kostyuk - and some of it involves appreciating tennis. Anyway, it got me thinking that ukrainian australians havent firebombed russian orthodox churches in australia. In fact, I cant remember seeing russian australians complaining about being abused on the streets.

I wouldn't assume that the whole of local Jewish community would be suggesting that criticism of Israel would or should be banned. That is a violation of free speech. I don't know any Jewish person who doesn't like having their opinion heard!
