I love him. He is hard at it and doesn’t back down. Has the energy to get the rest of the playing group up. What does he need in his game to become an elite A grader?
Just find more pill. Doesn’t need to be a hell of a lot more but 21.9 touches to over 25. Also probably kick more goals, 0.4 a game. He has the potential to kick 20 plus a year.

Probably my favourite player these days might not look like him, run like him or he built like him but he's hard as a cats head like Jason Johnson. Another of my favourites. If he gets 10% more of the ball we are a better team for it.
love him

Loved Jason Johnson...under rated player outside of Essendon.

Is anyone else doubting that he will reach A grade/elite status as a midfielder? I have my doubts that he and Caldwell for that matter will reach the heights that some seem to think they will. And I’m not basing my opinion on their performance in the St Kilda practice match I’ve felt this for a while. I really want to be proven wrong but they’ve been around for long enough now and must take the next step to help elevate the team

He’s got the all-round attributes to be that player. The only thing missing is consistently getting enough of the footy. What is it that takes you from being a 20-25 possession player every second week to a 25-30 possession player every week? Belief? More experience? Better players around you?

Gotta be more of an elite seagull to be that guy, hes more blue collar

Even the 20-25 every week rather than every other week would get him close to the very best in the comp. He’s still the only player on our list who could play a seagull role, as well as in-and-under, as well as be strong overhead and good at his feet, as well as be defensively accountable and damaging going forward. I really want to see him take that next step.

Newcombe is very stiff.

But the melts on the HawkEs board are funny as ****.

Seriously though the inconsistency is mind boggling.

On one hand the AFL said Ed Richards didn't need to be injured, it's the act we are trying to stamp out not the result, newc cooked. Then next breath ..Byrnes head didn't hit the ground...Durham safe. Isnt it the act they are trying to stamp out not the result?

Weird times.

a) you can only be suspended for something that is a reportable action ("the act")
b) when determining what punishment, if any, to hand out to an incident which is a reportable action ("the act"), consideration must be given to the "impact" of the incident, which can be low, medium, high or severe. "negligible" impact will not lead to a suspension, although the MRO can upgrade "negligible" impact to low impact by considering the "potential to cause a further or greater injury"

with something like the Durham one, although I personally think Durham was a dumb idiot, given the absence of any actual head contact with the ground, meaning there was negligible impact (I guess less than negligible impact really), it's pretty difficult to suspend him. the MRO could upgrade that to low impact, but Durham/Essendon could argue that there was no head contact because Durham made an effort to prevent the head getting the ground, thereby showing a duty of care required by the game.

if there was head contact to the ground, Durham would have probably been toast. he's either actually done something in the tackle to prevent the head hitting the ground ("duty of care") or more likely, has gotten plain lucky and needs to be more careful going forward.

Newcombe has likely been upgraded from negligible to low impact because of the potential to cause injury and the fact that negligible impact did occur, which again, hasn't really even happened in Durham's case

The simplicity amplifies the stupidity here Howie.

Durham's tackle didnt cause the head to come in contact with the ground.

Therefore, apparently, he took reasonable care.

We know he has the tools. This year I hope to see them for longer stints during each game with greater consistency. If he's having an extra 3 touches a game on average we will be a better side.

The reservations about Durham going from good > very good > elite probably stems from the influence he has on games.

Sammy has had games of 15 touches but we rave about him, others where he has had 24 and been limited. If he can improve on his kicking, the positive possessions we'll have a player.

At the moment he is an almost player, has the ability to play A grade games but those mentioned earlier are reasons why hes in the same group as Jacob Hopper, Jy Simpkin, Adam Cerra moulds (some are obviously better than the next but the point remains)

I think his only problem is that he has quarters where you don't notice him. Apart from that, he's already there. Has all the attributes and does things not many other players can do.

I have my Doubts.

I dont think he will be A Grade.
maybe he will be what we wanted tsatas to be - a Shiel type.......can break away from a stoppage, but can hit a target and has courage and can take a mark and kick a goal.

He has elite qualities, but lacks the production.
I see him as a windhager type, will be a handy support mid, but not the gun.
I mean shiel wasn't either at GWS.

We still need a harley Reid saviour type.

He is probably similar to a Jude Bolton / Brett Kirk type who just gives his all.

Surrounded by better mids who can block and get him in space and take tag off him and feed him the ball more....thats probably whats required to get to next level and get bigger recognition.

He is not an absolute A grade, but it doesn't matter. His role is to be the hard working no compromise guy.

He is what he is - a solid B grader and a worthy addition to a premiership squad as a midfielder workhorse type.

BUT then you have Parish and Caldwell who are pretty similar mids IE they're great in a phonebox, slowish and can't kick - and I'm a tad worried about Sharp being a 4th.

You can't play modern footy with 3-4 of these guys in the team.

I think Sharp and Durham make up a fantastic pair if you can get them the burst, explosive game changer to go with them.

I doubt it.
Caldwell a good defensive minded mid but little bit off dunkley, Atkins etc. Needs more size or tackles.

Durham a bit of x factor and kamikaze attack but doesnt have the accumulation or evasiveness/strength of a butters/danger/rowell.

Tried to compare playing styles. I think we are still missing the genuine a grade/brownlow chance post merret.

I hope Farrow as more a day, Dawson, bont style. Or robey as a de goey, greene, lalor.

He's quite a flexible player - great tank, so effective wingman. Hard in the contest, so a strong inside competitor. Excellent overhead mark, so dangerous in the forward 50.

One of our best players, purely because of this ability to play multiple positions and have a big impact in all three.

Does he rub Caldwell's oiled up arms for luck before every game? Because **** me he might have the least clean hands on our list at the moment, and that's saying something. Fumbles absolutely everything.
