Im not blaming Serpell anymore the players have to take accountability for blindly following his directions after clearly seeing his methods destroying muscles, bones, tendons and cartlidges.

I’d be keen to understand from the club, specifically the high performance team, why Josh is having repeated problems with his Quad. I don’t think it was an injury that impacted his junior career.

Consequently, is the injury linked to his latest growth spurt, or is it connected with the extra training load associated with a high performance program, or is there a bio-mechanical fault with how he runs, kicks or his general posture. It would be great if the club could offer a little more detail and present some of the medical evidence to explain this ongoing injury.

It’s cause his big. That’s what I got told from someone in RFC

If I’m right, I find it strange that Yze goes on SEN and says Josh will be integrated into full training within 2-3 weeks, when Josh had injured his quad the previous Friday in a rehab session. Please, don’t tell me the coach didn’t know. Then Serpell announces on the Wednesday that Josh will be out for 6-10 weeks.

In not getting the messaging right about the injury, it makes people second guess the club and it gives oxygen to the conspiracy theorists, and on this occasion their would be some merit to their thinking. Plus, I’d like it clarified whether Josh is out for 6-10 weeks inclusive of a ‘mini preason’ or does the 6-10 week period mean that he is able to start full training after this period of time.

Ultimately, I’d like some clarity around the injury, even if the news is bad or they aren’t in a position to confirm a return date because a series of unknowns, then just simply tell us.

Mate he isn't even that big. 6ft 4 Is a point guard in the NBA. They have blokes 6ft10 - 7ft4, younger, & playing against men like Jokic, running up and down courts 3-4 games a week. Smillie is tall for a footy player and his growth spurt can be an adjustment - but Giannis came into the NBA as a 6ft 8 18 year old & grew 3 inches in the first 18 months. He didn't miss games, he played 158/164 games as a teenager. Smillie couldn't play 1 and barely was able to train. The growth spurt is a factor, but certainly not the main reason he has missed games. That much is clear.

Josh Smillie: Quad, 6-10 weeks

“Josh Smillie's injury is well documented now, and we're all very disappointed about that injury, no one more so than Josh himself, and then closely followed by everyone else at the Club,” Serpell said.

“The important thing to note is the surgical side remained intact, and unfortunately, when you undergo surgery like this, you need to distribute force elsewhere, and the surrounding structures haven't tolerated the force production which Josh has generated in that muscle.

“It is a disappointing start to the career for Josh, but not unlike some of our other Richmond greats, David Astbury, Dylan Grimes, and Trent Cotchin. So we just have to get around the young man at the moment and support him through this latest setback, and we know that he's going to have a really good future at this Club.”

So the same leg as the surgery which personally I find reassuring because if suddenly it was both quads you’d have to start questioning his genetics

I know you didn't initially quote it but kicking is the most common cause of all rectus femoris (one of the 4 major muscles of the quadriceps) injuries...

Seeing some of the friggen stupid replies on here by many not understanding that kicking is the most likely cause of quadricep injury is mind blowing.

What a stupid echo chamber we can become sometimes.
Well yes, I agree, you use your quads to kick.

But Yze's comments suggest that, at best, they had him on a modified regimen with the advice to 'kick softly', but then he kicked too hard, and injured himself?

Or was it just that he really shouldn't have been kicking at all?
Let alone the 3 weeks/8 weeks morning/afternoon thing, the messaging is all over the place.

My main thing is that Yze should defer all injury questions to the medical team. I don't think Yze is great at relaying info.

NBA players would be lucky to run 4km a game playing a non contact sport. None of the players you named would have the endurance to run out half a quarter in the AFL and none of them are kicking a ball 50m. I dont see the relevance of your post tbh.

Yze was likely just repeating/paraphrasing what he'd been told, which may well have been paraphrased to start with. The less we hear from Serpell, the better - rarely gives us good news that guy ;)

Nah that's rubbish. How many NBA blokes kick the ball? ;)

Smillie hasnt played a single game. He cant even get through training.

The NBA blokes player 3-4 games a week with East to West travel inbetween games. Are you trying to tell me Smillie can't play a game of footy, but in the NBA he'd be playing 82 games a year??:tearsofjoy:

The injury is from kicking the ball not from running. Pretty sure they don’t kick in the NBA.
In addition compare to other sports all you want but nothing stacks up to AFL from an all round athlete requirement particularly a mid. As you mentioned also he is big for a footy player and exceptionally big for a mid.
