Joe is horrible though. Our defence always looks shakier when he's involved. Your lineup would amount to us conceding the game IMO.

He is but we must get things done without VVD. We can't keep flogging a 34 year old repeatedly without a serious risk of injury.

He won't be rested in the international break either. Something has to give.

Considering Netherlands only play 2 friendlies, we should request he be rested.

With WC 2026 preparations in full swing the chances of that is about zero.

I wonder if he will call it a day internationally after the WC? I'd like to get one more season out of him after his current deal expires (finishing up in 2028).

The early away game after a CL fixture is a nightmare. Rotation is a must.

----------------------Ali-------------------

Frimpong------Ibou--------Jogo--------Kerkez

----Szo---------Grav-------Curtis

---Rio--------Hugo-------Flo

Mama
VVD
Robbo
Nallo
Nyonyi
Mac
Cody
Chiesa

VVD must have a break with the short turnaround.

Szo probably needs a break too but we can't afford to give him one.
Why? VVD never rests and he's our best defender and he's a terminator. We are trying to qual for CL next season, we cant go resting our best defender in a tough away game. That's madness.

As for the game, best we've looked in ages. Could've scored 10, settled for 4 and really should have had 5 outside of an awful decision to protect the GK. That goal was legitimate.

So happy for Mo to play so well in the second half after missing the pen. A goal and an assist, and a banger goal too, vintage Mo. I hope the injury isnt too bad.

Why cant we play like that all the time is the question?

I really think the best aspect of this morning was the reaction after half time considering the missed pen just before the break. Just went again, with great reward.

I think we can play faster and with more finesse when we don't have Gakpo and Gomez clogging things up. So that's a start.

We haven't been able to play Frimpong at RB and Szobo/Wirtz in midfield all at the same time as often as we'd have liked. Even though Wirtz didn't have his most brilliant night, he was lively and made a lot of our passing sequences flow better.

I do think it's simply taking time for chemistry to build between new and old players. We've looked like strangers to each other with and without the ball too often, but tonight it was all well organised.

Oh and Kerkez in that form changes our team. He's improving as the season goes on, but consistent performances like the one tonight will make us miss peak Robbo less.

The team played with intensity we used to play with when Jurgen was our manager. Bring that to the PSG games and we are a good chance.

He only played 60 mins last night, what with all the rolling around and carry on by Gala players…

It's an away game early KO on a Sat following a CL game. Are you saying we can't win without VVD?

The bloke is 34. So much for qualifying to CL when he comes off with injury due to being played while in the red zone for which I am pretty sure VVD would be in now.

Either that or do a deal with Netherlands that he plays less in the international break. But that could be difficult with a WC upcoming.

Meh he never misses games. He doesnt run like mids or forwards, he cleans up at the back. He wont be gassed. Gala didnt stretch him at all. I will bet my life savings that he starts against Brighton as he should. We're trying to qual for CL next season!

I'm definitely quoting this if he breaks down against Brighton. Definite red zone game, has been playing every match. Early Sat fixture following Wed night CL game.

That is a good result. Watched the first half and wasn't that impressed - finishing was disappointing but I also thought there was a lack of interplay. Ekitike wanted to do things solo.

Only watched highlights of the second half but very pleasing from what I saw.

Important second half from Salah - a great assist with Ekitike, and a nice touch from Wirtz for Salah for his goal. More of that.

Now the test is to back it up. We have not really shown the ability to play 2 good games in a week. So massive test at the weekend.

That was fun. Nice to have an enjoyable Liverpool watching experience again.

Has anyone yet explained why the Gala player was stretchered off for a cut hand?

Freak accident where he got his thumb caught between the advertising boards.

Reports from Turkey say his thumb was detached and it needed surgery, although that may be putting some mayo on it and how bad it really was. Looked more like just a deep cut, but pretty gruesome either way.

penciling in a loss to brighton

mo didnt look overly enthused despite assisting hugo.
This isn't uncommon for any world class footballer facing the reality of his lost superpowers. He was probably just relieved to make a contribution as he would be well aware of how many "Mo goals" he's simply fluffed this season. I standby the statement that even with our other flaws, plug last season's Mo into this team and we'd be at least where City are, or better. Add last years VVD and we're probably right in the title race, matching Arsenal for boring but pragmatic football.
