Is this guy in your best 22 going into 2008 or close to?

What position would he play because of your midfield depth?

Forward Flank?

Back Flank?

Not sure how anyone can can rightfully say he's in our best 22 at the moment. For starters, for all his dominance in the VFL, the step up AFL is another thing (and he is, as it stands, unproven there). Not to mention the issue of the pecking order.

He has alot going for him though, mostly in the sense that what he is good at is a desired commodity in the team at the moment (quick, outside, line-breaking, goal-kicking finisher with a pinch of x-factor in his approach to constantly moving himself and the ball forward). That alone, to go with his flexibility as a legitimate small forward/midfield option, might push him up the pecking order to be in name contention with a guy like, perhaps Prismall, who's ideally the next guy sitting off the rack outside our current 22 (well, at least from last year's GF). If anything, what he brings above might even be put forward as his case for a spot, against a guy like Prismall.

Alot might depend on our plan for the small forward position as well, this year. People are quick to write Byrnes off as an ommision from the GF squad, but I think it'll be interesting to see whether the selectors still see the need for a Byrnes-type forward to exist in the team structure. I still see no reason why a rotating mid or more versatile forward can perform the same (or very similar role) all the while bringing better and additional traits to the team. But that's another matter. In either case, competition will be tough for Davenport up forward (where he'll be competing with guys like Byrnes, Varcoe, and maybe even Vegas and Djidi) to play alongside our current small forwards like Stokesy and Chappy (and a rotating Kelly etc). The situation in the midfield speaks for itself really.

Hardly a clear-cut OUT: Byrnes, IN: Davenport situation.

I'd rather my dead grandfather on the flank than pussnuts Byrnes, but in reality, Davenport is probably no further advanced than the Shepp leprechaun at the minute. Ryan Gamble is the kid to watch out for, more ability in his little knacker than the aforementioned spuds in their whole body.
As an aside, watch Tim Callan tear it up for the sister rooters this year.

I believe he will claim a spot in out best 22 yes. In the forward line. Perhaps rotate through the midfield a bit if he is up to it. I have great faith in him. Most here do. He is genuinely quick and good with the ball.

I agree, while he has fantastic speed, is generally good at bombing long goals and looked great over the second half of last year in the VFL, I suspect it will be another 2 years before he can claim a start-up spot in the big league.
