I still think we're ok for numbers down back come round 1. I imagine Weitering, Jones & Plowman are all there plus Marchbank if he's ready, then we have Simmo & Newman who'll definitely be there. Daisy will be in the 22, either as a hff or hbf, and then there's potentially Garlett who might sneak in as a small defender too.

My money is on Setterfield playing as a mid-fwd, rotating between the forward line, wing and a few runs inside. That's his game, he's a Mundy/Bont style player.

No doubt that is his spot. I think there is nothing wrong with easing him into footy after the ACL.;)

I add some emergencies, just in case.
One thing to consider in best (available) 22s: in a drill clearing from deep defence at training yesterday Fisher sat behind the contesting tall forward and back. His incredible read of the play, elite skills and steer out of trouble in traffic just shone. We need him everywhere but there could be a case for him to be Doc’s replacement coming out of defence. We’re short on small forwards (no pun intended) but there is real balance in height, speed, skill with a back 6 of:

Fisher Jones Plowman

Simmo Weiters Newman

Plowman is clearly in career best condition. Dropped the puppy fat and is stripped back and moving noticeably better. Weiters has dropped a lot of weight from his legs, stronger upper body and also looked lighter and more nimble. We will need Marchbank on the bench for rotation with the talls. Pretty quick, athletic and sound line up if Jones can get back to 2017 form.

In the drill was he there as a defender or forward?

I still suspect Fisher will rotate between hff, fp, wing and on-ball this season, all positions he's more than capable at. His ability to run out games, coming off the leg break, might determine the amount of time he spends forward. Hopefully we have more midfield contributors this season too which will help as we won't miss him as much in the engine room. Despite all our recent/current injuries our midfield group appears in pretty good shape *touch wood*.

FB: Plowman - Jones - Simpson
HB: Thomas - Weitering - Newman
C: Murphy - Cripps - LOB
R: Phillips - Kennedy - E. Curnow
HF: SPS - C. Curnow - McGovern
FF: JSOS - McKay - Z. Fisher
Int: Dow* - Walsh - Polson+ - Cuningham*
E: Setterfield* / Gibbons / Bugg+ / Garlett

Kreuzer/Williamson/Marchbank/Macreadie on the go slow from the outside but see if this changes for JLT.

Setters to replace either Dow or DC if right to go/JLT form & same for Bugg > Polson from the track or maybe just a straight intro for Setters.

**Edit: forward line is light on for experience, so Bugg could be a senior body, even a long with Gibbons. Club would have liked Fasolo posturing up there I’d say.

My revised squad for Round 1.

JSOS Jones Newman
Walsh Weitering Marchbank
LOB Cripps Simpson
McGovern Charlie Fisher
Fasolo McKay Samo
Kreuzer Ed Murphy
Dow Thomas Plowman Bugg
H. Goddard Williamson Cuningham Setterfield

Time to take another look at my opening round 22.

Plowman Jones Newman
Walsh Weitering Marchbank
O’Brien Cripps Simpson
McGovern Charlie Fisher
J.Silvagni McKay Samo
Kreuzer Kennedy Murphy
Int: Dow Thomas Ed Setterfield
Emg: Williamson Goddard Garlett Cunningham

My Best 22 for 2019 with no Doc and Pickett struggling to get fit:

B: Plowman Jones Simpson
HB: Marchbank Weitering Williamson
C: SPS Cripps Murphy
HF: McGovern Charlie O'Brien
F: Fasolo McKay Bugg
Foll: Kruezer Dow Fisher
Int: Newman Walsh Curnow Kennedy

My points of difference in 2018 are thus (bold):
- more mobile backline (no Rowe) with Williamson adding mobility but not lacking height and the left peg will be important
- Newman to be a flexible utility, Cuningham is probably the only alternative hb in the twos
- McGovern will demand defenders pay attention and I just hope he can provide some guidance to Charlie & H
- our forward line pressure and conversion is critical to our success going forward, Bugg and Fasolo are our only proven small/medium forwards and must take their 2nd/3rd chance because we don't have much in the twos unless Polson can turn his pressure into pressure & conversion

A month later and wow this preseason is going to shit and my Best 22 needs some work

Basis for team changes/points of contention:
- Williamson - really like the potential of this kid and hope like hell we are managing his workload to be cherry ripe Rd1
- our forward line pressure and conversion is critical to our success going forward, Bugg and Fasolo were our only proven small/medium forwards and haven't take their 2nd/3rd chance - really hope the positive track news on Silvagni and Polson can translate to games - fear we may be too tall/slow up forward ??
- note Setterfield appears too good for our twos but I feel only 2 of Cripps, Kennedy and Setterfield should be in the team and Setterfield has more to prove - run from Walsh and O'Brien is required and Ed has the two way run required until our midfield builds their tanks

My Best 22 revised for 2019:

B: Plowman Jones Simpson
HB: Marchbank Weitering Williamson
C: SPS Cripps Murphy
HF: McGovern Charlie O'Brien
F: Silvagni McKay Polson
Foll: Kruezer Dow Fisher

Int: Newman Walsh Curnow Kennedy

My best 22 for the moment:

Plowman Jones Simpson
Newman Weitering Marchbank
O'Brien Cripps Petrevski-Seton
Murphy C Curnow Bugg
McGovern McKay Fasolo
Kreuzer Dow Fisher
Thomas E Curnow Kennedy Walsh

Emer: Williamson Setterfield Garlett J Silvagni

I fully expect Willo and Setters to come into the 22 once fully fit. For the moment though, 10 mature players with 70 games or more is vital to our ability to contest the ball.

Fasolo and Bugg out, Setterfield and Garlett in.

I'd like to get Jack in there but the balance would be out.

Edit: Forgot Gibbons. In for Garlett for mine.
Edit: Marchbank injured, he's out. J Silvagni in.

Plowman Jones Simpson
Newman Weitering Thomas
O'Brien Cripps Petrevski-Seton
Setterfield C Curnow McGovern
Murphy McKay Gibbons
Kreuzer Dow Fisher
E Curnow Kennedy Walsh J Silvagni

Emerg: Garlett Polson Cuningham Macreadie

Polson to surprise

With Bugg and Fasolo out, his odds are pretty good. Been reading good things about Garlett so I've brought him in. For forward pressure though, Polson is a decent call.

I think round one is looking like this at this stage.

B: Plowman Jones Newman
HB: Marchbank Weitering Simpson
C: O'Brien Cripps Murphy
HF: SPS Curnow McGovern
F: Fisher McKay Polson
OB: Kreuzer Kennedy Curnow
IC: Dow Walsh Setterfield Thomas
EM: Silvagni Stocker Garlett Cuningham

Missing
Docherty - Knee Reco, big out.
Williamson - Is he missing? We will see.
Fasolo - Will likely miss the early stuff.

It's a good side, maybe only three missing.

Big season for Fish. His run, pressure and silky skills in traffic will be critical. Will be a bolter this season amongst all players in the comp.

Likely to receive a boost in confidence with his AFLX drafting (thanks Crippa), hopefully competes well with the best which leads into the season proper.

I thought this too. Bit of a token pick being close to Crippa, but even if slightly artificial he’s being recognised as a quality AFL player already. (Along with McGrath, Stephenson, Higgins)

Just to follow up. If our Rd One side is like below our Northern Blues side could look like this

Plowman Jones Simpson
Garlett Weitering Newman
Kruezer Kennedy Curnow
Murphy Cripps O’Brien
Thomas Charlie Fisher
McGovern McKay SPS
Dow Setterfield Jack Walsh

Stavrou Goddard BSOS
Blakey Kerr Schumacher

Phillips Cuningham Gibbons
Cottrell Stocker Wilson

Polson Casboult Palmer
LeBois TDK Finbar

Int from: Lobbe Owies Fisher Wilson Penrith Hill Collins

Assuming injured: Williamson Marchbank Fasolo Macreadie Docherty Pickett

Much Better Depth. At least 10 players I would be happy to see in the seniors

Round 1 for the NB’s is 4th round into the AFL season (bye for round 1), you’d think Marchy & Fasolo are in the mix by then with 9 weeks to pass in between.
Pickett would be at almost 4 months as well by then, interesting to to hear on his outlook for his rehab.

That is bordering on unacceptable! How can alignment with the VFL be encouraged when you have so many players not involved in geniune competition. It needs to be totally aligned
