Watched a bit of the AFLW last night and the biggest impact by a rule change by far is the kick-in rules. The girls were clearing 60-65 metres (last year it was more like 40) on every kick out because the defender was further off the square and the kicker could play on without kicking to themselves. I reckon in the men's we'll start seeing 85 metres clearances easy. Could mean our repeat entries strategy is dead. This is the biggest way the rules are going to affect us by far.
Didn’t see any of that match was the full back running an extra 10-15 meters on every kick out after a point was scored?

Thing is with the new kick in rule, it may affect our repeat entries but dont forget we have one of the best stat wise from kick ins in shorty. With his speed and boot he will clear the wing almost, and that's something weve struggled with

From the new rules this was the one that is the most concerning for me.

From memory i believe we were the 2nd or 3rd most for kicking points, This in 2019 is going to be an easy release for the opposition and will effect our ability to hold the all inside our attacking half of the ground. The turnover's that translate to goals will be alot higher than any time in the past and we will se alot of 'Coast to Coast' Goals being scored.

Players like castagna are going to have to make sure of their shots and not just blaze away blindly, You will see alot more setting up for direct shots and less snaps from obscure angles imo

I actually think Chol could suprise a few this season. He looked good
On the GC one out against rance and is perfect for a second ruck role
Did Rance fall over again?

Nope, maybe 3 or 4 metres at most before getting closed down and a lot of kick ins were kicked from the safety of the square and all towards the flank direction as per normal. No different to a player kicking to themselves and running a few metres before kicking. Nothing has changed except they don't have to kick to themselves and can just overstep the line with no penalty.

The kick in rule was brought in with the hope teams would launch up the guts with the player on the mark set back to 10m instead of 5m, they even made mention of this last night before the cats game that the hope was to use the corridor, it won't happen and teams will still close down the kick in and it will be easier to defend as the backs wont need to work up as far hence the coast to coast over the back goals will be harder to get from a kick in.

It’ll be very interesting to see how many long roosts there’ll be from fb in the men’s game.
It’ll increase from recent years to the flanks/wings but not too much straight down the guts. The problem with going down the middle is if it’s turned over opposition will still hurt you with quick movement back into the forward line

But with a good mark and long kick its 30 mtrs out infront of your goal

Honestly, it is obvious that the new rules are targeting our way of playing. The new kick-in rule is going to affect teams who lock the ball into their forward half and the 6-6-6 set up hurts those who like to have the numbers in the back half from a centre bounce. We fall in both categories. Under the new ruck rule, the ruckman can also just grab the ball without prior opportunity being called. Guess who that'll help? Teams like Melbourne, West Coast and Collingwood, our main competitors of 2018. It’s not going to favour the likes of Shaun Grigg and Daniel Rioli.

Anyone who says that these rules will not affect our way of play and that we can just do whatever we did in 2017-2018 is in denial. Others will be changing the way they play to suit the new rules, and if we don’t adapt we may find ourselves becoming also-rans quicker than we’d like to admit.

What we need to do is:
1. Lift our contested possessions in the midfield more than we did in 2017-2018. I have a feeling that we lost contests on purpose in the last couple of years to kill them on the rebound after intercepting in defence, but we can’t do this as often anymore if it really does open up the field.
2. Bring in a taller forward line so they don’t all jump on Riewoldt and nullify our aerial game there. We did with Lynch coming in, but I feel we need another one. With the 6-6-6 set-up and the new kick in rule, the effectiveness of forward pressure will not be as much whenever a goal or point is scored given the reduction in congestion at that time.
3. Bring in a genuine second ruck. The Grigg experiment was gone even before the announcement of the new ruck rule. That only enforced it. Although this new rule is the one that hurts our way of playing the least, it’s still something that I would like to see us address.

Will only take 1 long Shorty kick in for the opposition to work out where to set up and then the long kick in is useless. You can only get away with it once maybe twice if your lucky before teams will shut you down.

Make no mistake though, there will be hyping and blowing hard for these tweaks by the media and commentators about how great they are when it suits their agenda but silence when clubs shut them down.

1. We set up 7-6-5 most of the year in 2018, 6-6-6 wont effect us or any other club.
2. Ruck rule has just been made official that's all, prior opportunity has been massively relaxed the last 2 years, i know because i kept screaming out that it should've been a free because the ruckman grabbed the ball and got touched. Wont effect us.

Not in denial dude, these tweaks and that's all they are will not be making sweeping changes to the game. People who think they will are over thinking it.

There’ll be coast to coast action no doubt how often sides roll the dice and go straight down the guts won’t change dramatically though imo. Good sides will set up for it, players like Gawn and Grundy will be hard to get past.

Yeah the new ruck rule will probably affect us the least our of all of the rules.

Having one spare man in defence to no spare men can make a difference if the centre clearance is quick. This is why I think we'll concede more than we did last year. On the flip side of the rules, not only have we improved our forward line, but our forward line would also open up at each centre bounce against the lower sides so I think we may post higher scores against them. Also, it means that Short can also clear our defence straight into the midfield from a kick-in on some grounds.

There are some positives, but I think the negatives outweigh it, which is why I think it is worthwhile tweaking how we play.

Rule changes won't create instant differences but they will evolve strategies over time, they have to. Clubs will try things to exploit the changes, every 4 point game is worth exploiting. Initial exploitation will be developed further as the year goes on. I'll be more interested in what is done in Round 1 compared to Round 23 than last year to this year tbh

I think our coaching staff will be all over it. I'd expect our game style to change this year especially having 2 of the best KPFs in the league.

I get how people are reacting to these tweaks, heck i did it at the start before actually having a good think about them all and conceding that nothing will actually change, clubs are smarter than the AFL and will shutdown and exploit these tweaks to within an inch of it's life and then there will be a whole new world of whinging and complaining.

Edit: the whinging and complaining will only be after about round 5/6 as the first few rounds are always free wheeling affairs regardless of any rules and the back slapping that these tweaks have made the game better will be chringeworthy.

All it will do is move the zones 15-20 metres further up, then leave an open forward line for the team that forces a turnover to drive into. The bottom teams will get massacred then we'll start hearing the whingeing about the blowouts lol
