LAST TIME THEY MET
Brisbane (3.4.22) def Fremantle (2.3.15) @ South Pine Sports Complex
Last time, we saw a massive wet and wild slip and slide, some Bikram yoga humidity, and every so often something resembling football. Jess Wuetschner, the AFLW player with the most career goals, was the difference in front of goals. The Tasmanian (drafted under our noses from East Fremantle) was too classy in the conditions, racking up 2 goals and 18 disposals. At the other end our forward line went missing and despite several searches in the change rooms were never found. RIP.
WHAT'S CHANGED?
We've gone from a team with a decent midfield, strong back line and no forward line, to now a team with an arguably stronger midfield, a weaker back line and what is shaping as one of the best forward lines in the AFLW. Last week Houghton had 3 contested marks (highest of the round) to go with her 2 goals, whilst Antonio had 3 goals assists (highest of the round). When was the last time we had a FF and CHF for either the men or women's teams that topped those 2 statistics in a round of football?
Brisbane on the other hand haven't changed much at all - but two GF appearances probably means they don't need to. If people think Ross' game plan is boring then they probably don't want to watch Brisbane's AFLW team play. They have won more games than any other team over two seasons because they are all about defence and a priority of keeping the opposition to low scores. Their backline is great, their midfield solid and their forward line relies heavily on Wuetschner and "big unit" Frederick-Traub (from South Fremantle!). They also added Dowrick (who we passed on last year - somewhat understandable given her link to West Coast). She's talented and went ok on debut last week.

PREDICTION
There has been plenty of hype about how good Brisbane are and they go in favourites despite it being our home game. I'm not as convinced. I think Antonio and Houghton have the athleticism to really trouble their defence (like they did against Melbourne). If Fremantle's midfield can win majority of the ball and get it to our forwards I think we'll score well like we did last week. I think the 38+ forecast and question marks over their midfield depth (they only used 4 players in the middle last week), means we should run out the game stronger again. The problem for us will be if they manage to set up a wall and we can't get the ball in to our forwards (or front half - like the 3rd qtr last week) then we won't be able to contain Frederick-Traub and Weutschner with lots of repeat entries. I'm hoping we've learnt from that mistake and will be willing to take the game on if we get hemmed in too much.
