The club loves him

Great to hear, Macca.
Any other insights into how he's been training, how close he is to AFL standard, what the coaches see as his main strengths?

Also, updates on Atley? Doctor Feel indicated a couple of weeks ago that he may have fallen behind a bit. I wonder whether Wines' injury will be the stimulus he needs to get his act together.

I still have very high hopes for Drew, Atley and SPP forming a great centre-square midfield alliance.

Will probably start in the middle for the Magpies in round 1 with guys like Atley, Hewett, Trengove etc.

If he starts off in the middle, I would like to see him play on so called cows golden boy Flogerty (in the U/23 game)

Flogerty = 193cm 94kg - 10 AFL games
Drew = 190cm 85kg - 0 AFL games

to see what happens (and see how close he is to getting an AFL game)

if he beats the cows golden boy then he is ready (and it will shut them up - saying he is the 3rd / 4th coming of Roo)

if he doesn't beat the cows golden boy then he needs a bit more time

Will Fogerty even play in midfield rather than up forward?

Always good when a player the team has been pumping up internally shows significant promise in a pre-season match open to the public. I'm just really impressed with his movement for such a bit unit. If he continues on this path for the JLT series, he should be an absolute lock for round 1.

Seems like we have a lot of good young mids coming through. SPP, Drew, Atley, Duursma and Rozee all 21 or less, and Ollie is still just 24. Really just need to get games into the young players at this point to see what they have in them.

He looked good today. Give him a go in the JLT games against the crows and North to see how he goes against the old boys.

I remember Amon was being pumped up by a few internally a few years back and then kinda fizzled. Hoping this doesn't occur w/ Drew.

If we could pick up Francis with our supposed war chest, then imagine 2 big redheads in the centre square.

If, and it’s a big if, Drew, Atley, SPP, Duursma and Butters, all come continue their upward trajectory, Rocky, Boak and Ebert, etc will start feeling a bit of pressure, which will be a good thing.

My recollection of Drew from his draft and the year after was that he was talented but needed time to get up to speed and get an AFL ready frame. He was always going to be a slower burn than SPP or Atley. Hopefully, he is now ready to push his claims.
