Nope, just ask Tom Browne or a HS journo. R1 counts for everything.
That reminds me, i better start a worst premiers defence thread after the WCE loss. That’s what we do on the MB yeah?

Best. Round 1 1990

I’m already intently studying TAC Cup for the draft to find players who can plug in holes. Bring on season 2020!

Beams has done a Buckley.

Got off a horse and jumped on a donkey.

I’m sure Beams will crying into the premiership medal he already has.

Actually from what I saw, I wouldn't be too worried if I was a Crows or Pies supporter. Nether loss was a fluke but their touch just looked off.

West Coast were a bit troubling. Their brilliant transition from defence from last year wasn't there, and they went long to targets on the wing a lot. Credit the Lions zoning I get. I'd still back them to sort it and make the GF this year.

The Demons touch was off, but they also looked bullied by a pretty inexperienced team in Port. If you show that kind of weakness you'll get it every week.

Difference is last year collingwood and Melbourne didn’t have to beat any decent teams to make the top 8. This year they have to.
This logic is baffling.

How do people even know who the ‘decent’ teams are going to be in 2019?

Collingwood get to play Melbourne and WC twice...right now they are looking like easy wins!

Judging the quality of an opponent based on how good they were in 2018 is a nonsense

Some teams are just more ready for round 1 than others. The losers will be able to go back and look at the tapes, and then fix things up over the next few weeks. I don't think west coast are anywhere near as bad as what they looked, and they had a bunch of players out. Melbourne are more troubling but they'll get it together I think. Geelong and Collingwood were close, can't really say anything from that one. I didn't watch any of the hawks - Crows match but given their (Hawthorn's) list, that result is slightly worrying for Adelaide.

Its only round 1 and yes a loss in round 1 is still a loss of 4 points same as round 4 or 8 or 10.

However mentally, I think winning early games is good for confidence and momentum. Teams that lost are already in bounce back mode where there is now a bit more pressure to win the next game or two. Otherwise you risk starting 0-2 or 0-3 in some cases, and when you drop ones you are expected to win suddenly the the first month can start 1-3 and you're playing catchup already.

That's not a recipe for a top 4 finish.

I look forward to next weeks 'relax campaigners it's only round 2' thread.

Not season ending obviously. Once the dust settles people will realise that. The season is a marathon not a sprint. For the Dees I feared we’d have a slower start to the given some players were barely in full training until recently. I just want to see some sort of response. Next week. So far 5 out of 6 favourites lost. I very much doubt that’ll be the standard for the year.

Luckily Melbourne didn't play any decent teams in September either.

Worrying signs for Crows was that had Hawks kicked straighter in the second half they’d have got walloped at home by 10+ goals, and that was without one of our best stoppers sitting on Sloane(Howe).

Other clubs will tear them apart unless they find some intensity quick smart.

Some games will be seen in hindsight as season defining.

Others will be seen as a blip.

Which ones will be which, who knows?

But let’s guess

Richmond def Carlton - probably about how I’d expect both to be this year. Rich should be top 6 at worst, Carlton more competitive but still bottom 4

Geel def Pies - Should be 2 top 8 sides, possibly a top 4 side amongst them. Not reading too much more into it.

Port def Melb - Melb undercooked, but they’d want to turn it around quick otherwise could get into a rut and be battling for the top 8 even. Port probably a mid pack side, possibly bottom half of the 8

Adelaide v Hawthorn - Weird game, considering Adelaide dominated a lot of stats which would usually lead to a win. Both sides mid range, 5-12 area.

WB v Syd - Gut feel is this says more about syd not being any good than a rise of the dogs. Syd prob 12-13th, dogs lower still. But if all went right, either a shot at the 8, though unlikely.

Bris v WC - Bris look ready to make a big leap. Finals a possibility. West Coast, not jumping off at all, but would want to win next week and not get too far off the mark.

St Kilda v Gold Coast - I assumed bottom 4 teams and still do.

GWS v Essendon - Had GWS 5th and Essendon 9th with my pre season predictions. Hard to say who this said more about. GWS as good as anyone, and decent run with injuries could emerge as a flag favorite. Essendon looked bad JLT and continued here, if St Kilda beat them then that will open up a whole new can of worms.

Freo v North - I had north sneaking into the 8 and freo 14th in my predictions. To contradict I tipped freo, but the margin certainly shocked me. Both sides were poor in the JLT which makes the result more bizarre. I’m willing to write this off as a one off, need to see how Freo go away before seeing if they can improve.

Round 1 last year Collingwood, Melbourne and West Coast all lost yet all 3 made the top 4

Round 1 this year, Collingwood, Melbourne and West Coast all lost.

Before everyone starts up with the very typical 'drank their own bathwater' 'easy draw' 'overrated' etc lets just remember there are a whole host of reasons why teams arent at their best in round 1.

Congratulations to Port an Brisbane on their wins, clearly deserved an the better teams won. Just remember the season is alot more than 1 game

100%

The dees will have a great year and I'm predicting a top 4 finish. Port on the other hand will struggle to make the 8 but that can still be a great year if we continue to develop our youth.

22 rounds sorts out the men from the boys.

Good luck all

Losing round one is no real big deal, getting smacked in round one.... yeah, na.
They don’t often end up happy stories.

I actually don't think we will make top 4. Our list isn't in its peak shape. 5-10 for us again
