I thought our issue was being beaten in the ruck not having paddy missing. Watched the game really closely. Saw nothing to suggest contested marking was a problem. Fix the mids mix the main problems
That's going to be our biggest problem all year unless someone like Longer turns it on in the middle.

I think the game was probably about what most people expected, the two worst lists in the AFL looking at a genuine opportunity to pick up a win in 2019.

Well done Saints for holding on.

We are going to receive some real hidings this year on what I saw of our defence. At the other end, I think Membrey and Bruce will each go close to 50 goals. In the middle......well apart from Ross the rest were pedestrian still lack explosiveness through there.

I was just reflecting on today's game and was struck at how many of us have been relatively dissatisfied with today's win. Nobody has mentioned our crippling injury list. Normally it would guarantee a loss, no matter who the opposition was. I don't think GCS are as shyte as everyone has made them out to be, either. They still have a lot of young talent on their list.

Carlisle, Roberton, Hannabery, Longer, McCartin, King, were all missing today. Their injuries must have thrown our structures and preseason planning out. Jack Steven was clearly underdone.

The GOAT was coming back from injury through the VFL today. He must play next week. We still have Hunter Clark, Roma and Coff in reserve. Overall I'm feeling more cheerful than fearful.

I see someone is doing well for themselves..

Just bought long enough ago that it was cheap then. It's a pretty boring suburb, I want to move to the North but I can't afford it any more. Shit boxes that look like squats are worth more than my house in North Fitzroy and Brunswick these days.

I'm about ten pages behind, so apologies if this is all a mass Sandra, or if I'm mentioning wars that are meant to be left alone.

I thought our ball movement was vastly improved in the first half and it reflected a more positive game plan - we particularly delivered it well into fifty pretty regularly. I think we were spent after half time and reverted to last year's horrible kick and hope in the second half.

The fact that we were missing four first-choice talls (Carlisle, Brown, Robbo, Paddy) was really telling against a team that was much taller than I realised. I think I was right when I said last week that our biggest out is Paddy, because it changes our structure. I'm surprised that so many people want Joyce dropped. I'd be keeping him in, and with Brown coming back I'd move Battle forward. Yes, he's trained as a back all preseason, but I think we need that extra marking target in 50, and we can cover him down back with Brown.

A huge number of Gold Coast's goals came on the counter attack and showed that we're still slow, though definitely faster than last year. I think Hind for McKenzie and Clark for Dunstan could really help us.

Steven was a huge presence for us, but I did feel that he lacked some urgency or presence at certain times during the game. It was interesting that they started him on the bench at the beginning of the game. I found it even more surprising that they did it at the start of the second as well.

I'd like to see Robbie Young string together a number of games at Sandy like the one he played yesterday, but boy Dean Kent would be nervous.

Matty Parker.

That is all.
Yeh nah. Robbo and Carlisle are definitely more important than Paddy.

Yep, is that a new rule?
I've seen hundreds of footballers throw a ball on the ground in frustration before a throw in?

Problem was, it bounced 10 rows back into the crowd. That will always get paid.

I just remembered what got our of the game. Yes you are right. Many upsets. Do you think we are a top 8 side. No fantasy land suff. Did we win in. The end. Yes fact. We look like an 6 to 8 game winning side. Essendon look no wins but we know that’s not happening so grow up and take the 4 points.

Evening guys, I've been wading through the posts.
Happy to scrape a win today, and some decent moments along with some frustration during the day.
Not sure if anybody else was bugged by this, but it was doing my head in.
2 of their guys were allowed to hobble around out there on one leg, unimpeded by our players and impact the game. DMac was standing ever so politely alongside Swallow, and the other guy Ainswerth or whatever his name was too was just strolling around. Get stuck into them! Push them, bump them, put them on their arse. Make their coach think about sitting them out for the afternoon.
If I was Dew I would have been loving the lack of attention and the luxury of just leaving them out there knowing they'd get through OK.
I thought we were a big chance to get them a man or 2 down and take advantage of rotations e.t.c, but noone in the coaches box seemed to be thinking the same way at all. I know what a Collingwood/Geelong team around 2010 would have done to our players in that situation.

Anyway, not sure what else has been covered or not, so I'll read a bit more before I comment much on the game. I thought Lewie was just OK, and I think Marshall has enough run and versatility to find a way in even as backup. I really would love to ask the coaches (or people on here with a good memory for these things) when having Bruce as a back-up ruckman has really worked out well for us. Today I thought Bruce handled it pretty well, but as the season goes on and the niggles come I think he's gonna find it harder and harder to perform up forward while playing 2nd ruck.

Agreed we need more players with campaigner in them. Long made some errors today but he did it sticking it the opposition and half the forum want him dropped for it. He will learn from that but please dont knock that out him, encourage more of it in a controlled manner. You can only have so many nice blokes in one team and I reckon we have too many that dont want to stick it the opposition. Footy is a combative sport and the best players are prepared to run over the top of there opponents if required.

I also totally agree re Bruce, being the 2nd ruck will bust our most important forward. Marshall or another option must play and be used in that role or move Battle forward to ease he load on Brucey.

Didn’t you watch storm? Hard to take you seriously. Saw nothing to suggest height was the issue but I don’t rate Cameron smith telling me the problems.

Just out of interest which medium or small doesn’t play? I’m giving you hindsight to tell me. Should be easy.

Don’t do it to yourself man.. stay down here in the bayside ( I’ll include Caulfield ). Housing prices have gone wild over the past 3 years everywhere. It’s just incredible. I worry for my kids, especially as I intend to blow all my money before they get it.

At the ground it looked like he fumbled the ball over the boundary line, how did he hit it into the crowd?

I was hoping to buy some street cred now I'm old. Grow and ironic mullet to impress the hippies at the farmers market and get an unreliable vintage French car and a bike to ride when the car doesn't start in the rain.

No issue with aggression. But it has to be at the contest.

You are actually joking. Right ?

We were behind the goals up the other end, people couldn't see what had happened, it literally looked like he fumbled over the line when he juggled it marking. Maybe I've got the wrong free kick?

Actually pretty wrapt for the boys.

The win meant lots for them.

Despite our expectations of of how the game should play out and who the opponent is, I doubt the club disrespects the oppositions ability as much as we do.

I suspect they will see it as a hard fought victory but will also address the areas where we need improvement.

Whilst they may have been confident I doubt they were complacent.

Anyway, onwards and upwards.

Drake , the guys being out is no excuse - the only one in that list that we would be expecting to play was Carlisle and McCartin and even he is still not proved himself.
Roberton was always a question mark with his heart condition and we all knew Hannerbery would take a while to get going.

We had a good chance to really put Gold Coast away today but we failed , we play the Bombers next week and they are stronger than the Suns.
I still feel if the guys can get it right we have a side to beat most team's.

Brown and Acres will come in next week.
Brown will give us a bit more experience down back.
Acres is just a class ball getter.
Apart from them Marshall , Hunter , Young , Hind or Phillips are all a chance to play next week.

He fumbled the mark over the line ... therefore no mark, out of bounds. Then he threw the ball into the turf and it bounced into the crowd. Free kick every day of the week.

I was up the other end of the ground and didn’t realise that

I thinknits been a tough month for the boys after losing Paddy, Robbo, Jake and then Stuv.

Regardless of who played last year, that sort of stuff can knock the wind out of your sails pretty quickly.
