What you're saying is yes people didn't hear the ABC promise at the time, but they slowly realised later what he had promised and broken.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-07-27/no-cuts-to-abc-promise-check/5389220
Malcolm Turnbull announces that the ABC will receive $5.2 billion over 5 years rather than $5.5 billion, a saving of $254 million, or 4.6 per cent.

So you're telling me people that were KEEN to have asylum seekers on boats stopped, that were ENTHUSIASTIC about the tax on carbon emissions being cut, were just horrified at the ABC receiving a minuscule 4.6% less over 5 future years?

Seriously?

Massive lol.

Just for clarity - the boats actually started stopping with Rudd and his introduction of Operation Sovereign Borders. It is the same reason Scotty went to Christmas Island - he wants the boats to come - it is his last card to play.

Erm the mocking of Abbott this week for simply posting a goodnatured clip of a community street-side library box is really pathetic and cringey. 99% of Australians haven't encountered one before, so hardly surprising Abbott should point one out. There must be an absolute massive amount of them in tiny, far-left areas, such that this mocking actually makes sense.

Surprised he had so much praise for a blatantly anti capitalist community book sharing portal

He's shamelessly trying to say it's all because of the community spirit of the people of Warringah and made himself look out of touch, again. So he'll get called out, again.

People complain about the 2014 Budget - riddle me this - was Abbott's mandate to be a profligate Government? Or one much more concerned with Budget repair?

How about you answer THOSE core promises which lead to Abbott's mandate in 2013?

But he didn't repair the budget did he? He targeted the most vulnerable wth some nasty and unnecessary cuts in areas that were, in the big picture, so insignificant that even if they had have gone through, still put the budget in a gaping deficit and we'd still be here anyway.

I was hopong for a tough but responsible budget; but that's not what he gave. He still spent like a drunken sailor; there was no substance or effort behind his 2014 budget. It was just a giant miscalculated wedge and It was all for show, and only idiots fell for it. No offense.

But is he a liberal capitalist or more towards conservatism?

Nothing to do with my Tony or whatever. I just think it's seriously embarrassing when what Abbott posted was completely harmless. It makes the mockers look like pathetic bullies. I noted Chris Bowen and Anthony Albanese mocking him on twitter too - that's exactly the sort of platform on which that works, but maybe they should have the guts to call the other 99% of the Australian population that hasn't seen one of these in person, stupid as well?

Sorry, but what are you saying? That if there is one in the Warringah electorate in a certain street, that it's not due to the community spirit of the people living there?

To be honest, I very loosely followed politics that year (but my good sense is always present), but if I remember correctly the outrage about the Budget only became loud after he showed off to world leaders at the G20 in November about forcing Australians to pay for the doctor (the GP co-payment that was in the Budget).

In fact my overriding sense of Abbott's premiership is practically dead quiet nothing from Sep 2013 (especially compared with the hectic years before) until Jan 2015, when Liberal MPs started to dump on him publicly and through media leaks in a massive way, primarily about Peta Credlin (we can now piece together from texts like Road to Ruin that Bishop was agitated by her), using the Prince Phillip controversy as a cover about why he needed to be replaced (really, it was about internal politics). Just before this though, there was alot of irritation about how Abbott embarrassed us at the G20.

So anyway, as for tough but responsible, yeah $5 charges is exactly that.

The outrage about the 2014 budget was almost immediate.

There was barely a single thing in that budget that made anyone 18-30 better off, and much of it made us worse off.

I remember the Abbott Govt cruising along in silence until the end of 2014 practically. Compared with political coverage during the Rudd-Gillard years, and since the first challenge against Abbott in Feb 2015, then it was a very quiet period in Australian politics.

The Abbot/Hockey 2014 budget was poorly crafted. Abbot promised to cut spending but did so in a way that was heavily slanted towards attacking lower income and socially disadvantaged groups while doing little damage to people on higher incomes. The budget was clearly more about keeping faith with the 2gb crowd than good economic management.

The 2014 budget allowed a number of expensive tax concessions and subsidies to remain that in a real tight budget designed to slash spending should have been up for removing or reforming. Adding to the budgets problem was the poor message like with the medicare co-payment, it was reported in the press a few weeks before the budget that the government was considering it and the government ruled it out only to announce it in the budget.

A real cross the board budget cut would have been more like the first Costello budget which hit everyone and looked like a serious budget unlike the politically motivated budget that the first Hockey budget was.

Well of course it was. That's where most Government spending happens. Derr. On social security.

The people on higher incomes are the ones that PROVIDE GOVERNMENT with funds.

It isn't where the revenue comes from, its where the revenue goes and the federal budget has a number of tax concessions and subsidies that are not necessary if your objective is to deliver wide ranging structural change to the budget. Take franking credits to people not paying tax, its worth around $6b which may be fine if your priority isn't to tighten budget spending but if the budget needs cutting then its the kind of concession that one looks at.

And then.... THE OVERREACH!!!

Apparently Abbott does not agree with the Nightwatchman’s stance on preferencing PHON below Labor.

I would certainly put One Nation above Labor and the Greens because, let's face it, we have been able to work constructively in the Senate with One Nation.

Is Tony Abbott going out of his way to destroy his own chances of reelection and the Liberals, he seems to be going out of his way to destroy both.
This sort of crap.would only help him in an QLD electorate not the inner city latte sipping PC electorate he is.supposed to represent.
