The Premise:

Gil and co. go crazy at the end of 2019, and decides to take the most drastic equalisation protocols possible.

Before the National Draft, all 700+ currently listed players are thrown into a pool, to be re-drafted snake-format style. Saint Kilda, the wooden spooner has pick 1, but also pick 36. GWS who win the Premiership have pick 18, but also get pick 19.

Additionally, all 18 coaches are also thrown into the pool, although each team can only select one coach.

Expectations:

The usual suspects like Dusty, Danger, Fyfe and Grundy are hot property, and all expected to be taken in the top 10. Likewise, the up and coming stars like Bont, Andrews, C.Curnow and Oliver are also tipped to be taken quite high, within the top 20.

The Clarkson Question:

What pick (or range of picks) would you take Alistair Clarkson at? Would he go in the first round (first 18 picks)? Would you rather someone like Josh Kelly and get an average coach in a later round, or do you take Clarkson early and miss out on one of the biggest stars in the game?

I have him about 6th after players you can build a team around for a long time.

Grundy, Cripps, Bont, DeGoey, Andrews all in the mix.

Bad coaches can ruin great players. Great coaches can make average players give everything.

If Clarkson had coached Collingwood last year they would have won the flag. Had he coached GWS over the past three years they would have won one too.

Offer Clarkson to any club in exchange for their best player and not one person of sound mind doesn't take that trade in a second.

The coach has more impact on the entire team than 1 player does. So if a recruiter considers a few coaches to be head and shoulders above the rest, you would take them first, because they impact your entire list. Personally I would probably take Clarkson 1 if I didn't have a playing group and was building from scratch.

Not a fan of these blanket opinion statements without base. Pretty disrespectful to Buckley, not every playing group responds to every coach and they all have their strengths and weaknesses as individuals. Flags are won by coaching teams, not just head coaches. I mean they may well have, but maybe Clarkson's gameplan wouldn't work with the Pies?

Fair enough. But I think I would back Clarkson to improve any team in the AFL, hence my comment. Of course it is a general sort of statement but really, when somebody is stating that they take Harris Andrews over the greatest modern day coach then I am inclined to be a bit bombastic with my response.

I agree, as I said if I don't have a playing group I'm taking Clarkson 1 because he has more impact than any 1 player from scratch.
But with a playing group, some coaches are better than others or better suit their strengths. Would Eagles trade Simpson for Clarkson? Would Clarkson have made the changes and game plan Hardwick did in 2017 leading to a flag? Possibly not. I think Clarko is probably a better coach than both, but maybe not at that point in time for those playing groups.

Clarkson would likely go at pick 3.

Top 2 picks would be Chris Scott and Patrick Dangerfield.

Cautious as a Hawks fan of course, but I think I agree with the logic that you’d pick the best available coach as they’re going to impact every player that comes through the club for maybe the next decade or beyond, as well as having a big say in who those players actually are.

Also look at it defensively - say you pick a GAJ in his prime and the other 17 clubs pick the 17 best coaches. So now you can pick, say, a fully fit Rance or a peak Buddy. Now you’ve got two of the best possible players, and are guaranteed the worst possible coach.

I can’t see how you can possibly take that risk. It’s not a question of how much better Coach #1 is than Coach #2; it’s a choice between getting the best Coach vs quite possibly the worst.

Whereas who really cares if a badly coached side has GAJ and Buddy? They’ll still be thumped by other teams and there’s many, many good players in the comp.

As I said, it was a general statement and I amplified as to why I made it.

That's all.

I would also spend pick 1 on Adam Simpson or Chris Fagan..... and considering they will be in the game longer than Clarko it could be better value.

This shit cracks me up, it's so delusional.

What a laugh. If you offered any of those players in a trade for Clarkson the hawks would laugh in your face

Interesting. Could be right. What's his value then? 2 guns? 3 guns? 9 guns?

Dunno, I would give up Gawn and Oliver to Hawthorn for Clarkson.

Look at someone like Sicily, not a high pick, anger issues etc an Clarkson has moulded him into one of the best intercept players in the game.
We haven't been able to do that at Melbourne

It's an interesting proposition, not just for Clarko but coaches in general.

How many would go in the first round? There only 18 coaches and over 400 players.
