Autopsy Hawks fall in a heap against the Dogs - Rd 2, 2019

There was little to discuss, but a couple of observations:

1. Having sat in the same seats for 11 years, it was strange to be in seats about 20 metres away, but away from old friends; it is a gold Member Reserve section, but we were infiltrated by Footscray people who just took advantage of lax security. Davo23 was a bit embarrassed to get into an altercation in front of family: apparently, saying "Go back to Footscray" is a pretty severe insult, and the opposition "ladies" near us felt that was sufficient to unload their vitriol on us!

2. The whole result came down to some fortunate free kicks and lack of run in the last quarter; the latter was understandable after 2 very important midfielders were injured; the former were not.

3. I'm still in shock: I can't remember ever being at a Hawks game and seeing such a capitulation, even in the terrible early 1960's. Plenty for the coach to work with, I guess.

Forget that one, let's prepare for next week.

Go Hawks

We were in our usual area also, and the Bulldogs supporters seemed to be filtering everywhere, yelling like they were roiding out. One even had the nerve to yell out that he wanted Scully to break his leg. Amazing class shown.

The loss of Burgoyne was crucial. Hes gold and always cuts us up. With him healthy, you blokes hang on.

The O'Meara brain fade that led to the reversal with Macrae was probably the turning point, it was a 12 point turnaround. The Sicily "punch" was soft and shouldn't have been paid. But it didn't determine the game. In hindsight you guys will probably agree the other two contentious frees were there (Whorpel brain fade and Sicilys front on tackle).

Listen to Clarkos presser, he got it right.

That folks is why our game has turned to shit. If this sort of officiating is deciding games of football then I am done with it all. I mean, cynically one might say that the match was fixed. Sicily (and Hawthorn) has been penalised for quite literally nothing.

And the AFL will do nothing about it.
That's the most pathetic thing I've ever seen. Game in the balance. You see that kind of stupid push and shove all game, every single game, every single week in the entire history of the sport. To possibly decide an entire game on that is not simply pathetic, it's bloody match-fixing. At the very least it is the AFL pushing its narrative. Hawthorn dominating the comp again goes WAY against the AFL's narrative, they simply can't have it. And that was on display in full force yesterday.....

Few points, already noted this before but being at the game it was clear Burgoyne was not 100% fit to play before the bounce but we rolled with him anyway and now he'll be out for a month with both hamstring issues. Being at the ground and not actually really knowing what the free kicks were for, I wasn't too upset with out last quarter and just thought we got run over. But coming home to see what actually happened leaves a sour taste in the mouth thats for sure. Have they ever paid a free kick due to movement inside the centre circle ever before? No. Will they ever pay it again? Definitely not. Not to mention the sicily free kick you could probably isolate about 50 times players pushed each other like that with no free kicks earlier in the game.

Umpires ruined a good contest, i very rarely mention umpires, but this game was a joke.........

both good teams, Bulldogs just had a more young and vibrant group that were hungry.....

their half forwards helped them win the midfield battle, they just did the "get the ball going forw" Richmond roll-on style and it hurt us enough and we didnt hurt them enough.

then not having rotations in the last quarter meant that when they came at us we couldnt hold the tide. normally we would be able to defend a rush, but the 6-6-6 format meant we couldnt defend a rush on which was not normal for our style, it means you have to take your chance because setting up defensively isnt as easy as previous years.

mate im sick of you and Geelol getting BS frees year after year, take that rubbish out of here please..... thank you

Hope its looked into deeply yesterdays game because the umpiring definelty affected this result. The inconsistency of those reversals was bullshit!! Numerous times doggies players did what sicily and Jaeger did for not penalty, yet when the game is on the line they pluck them out. Blatant cheating

I don't know what the old sound was and didn't pay much attention to the new sound.

They could turn the PA down a little though - jeez is it loud

Old sound = no sound.
New sound = maybe it's meant to be Hawk noise but sounds like tiger roar on a very very low volume.

thats the first game ive seen since Lloyd got 3-4 goals gifted to him in the first quarter of the 2001 prelim final that felt like the umps actually cheated for our opponents.

We didn't play well at all, but you shouldn't lose from 5 goals ahead at 3 quarter time.

The umpiring did have a huge factor though, I don't like blaming umpires but they were hugely decisive in yesterdays game sadly.

Wingard and Howe in for Nash and Morrison please

If were gonna lose, let us lose the right way, by being beaten by a better team, not umpired out of the game by multiple low IQ decisions, Bulldogs are a decent team and might have beaten us anyway, but losing like that makes me not want to watch footy anymore, its embarrassing.

THOSE UMPS WERE CORRUPT, *** THIS SHIT

Leaving the umpires aside for the moment, our glaring weakness is our thin midfield and general lack of pace. At least we've got Scully and Wingard to add the badly needed depth. Where we've got 6 midfielders, the opposition has 10 or more and they're generally quicker.
We were absolutely cut up by the speed of the opposition to make position and create space. This had been our weakness for the last couple of years and all our serious losses in that time have come about for this reason (think Melbourne, Richmond, Brisbane).

Shiels played like a 35 year old before his injury, so did Burgoyne (as least Burgoyne's got an excuse - he's playing his age). Probably no coincidence that these two twanged their hammies as they struggled to keep up with faster opponents.

It's going to be a very long season for Roughy. He has simply lost his ability to handle the ball cleanly and can't hold a mark unless he's opposed to a 4 foot 6" opponent.

Mitch Lewis must be blooded quickly as he's probably our best bet to take the pack mark on the forward line or at least provide a contest and get the ball to ground rather than allow the opposition backs to mark unopposed (an unforgivable offence). Lewis showed that in 10 minutes of footy in the JLT game. He just needs senior game time.

Perhaps it's also going to be a long season for our captain. What worried me a couple of years ago was his tendency to go to ground in contests. We saw that again yesterday. He played a poor game.

To me Stratton is at his best when he is taking contested marks in the back line. To be honest though I can't remember the last time he took one (unlike my man Hendo who took 4 yesterday alone). I was not really sold on Stratts as captain (bit too laid back for me) and yesterday did not fill me with great confidence. But it could have just been a bad game, we will see how he responds next week.
Agreed on Rough, his body is cooked. He still has the football nous to be a contributor around the ground but we desparetly need a marking target in the forward line that can actually launch at the ball. I suggest we give Brand a crack, he was a forward as a junior and he can clunk a mark (plus his body is hardened and ready for the knocks).

Those two will replace Shiels and Silk if they're out.

But before those injuries occurred, I was very much in favour of the Wingard for Nash change.

Roughy was woeful. Didn't even bring the ball to ground because he kept running under it or jumping way too early. At the moment, Mitch lewis would give us more.

The rotations hurt us bad and the Umps had a 'shocker', putting it lightly. Maybe its time to see what the other kids can do.

Out: sheila, burgs, roughy.
In: wingard, howe, lewis.

True. Roughy has never been one to jump off one foot to take a mark. He goes up like a basketballer getting rebounds. That is fine, but it means his timing has to be spot-f#$%-on to be in the marking contest. Jumping at the ball forward is a little more forgiving than going straight up.
