I was just about to post about Steele as well. Once again he hasn’t gone on with his awesome end of season form. He’s been ok but he and Billings are averaging the same amount of contested possessions a game so far at under 9 which just isn’t acceptable. Even Clark came in and had 9.

We need to find ourselves a Worpel/Constable type in the draft. Ball magnets with questions about their kicking because how often do we see them come in and not be bad kicks. They just rack up possessions and give their team a chance. Still a massive need all these years later.
Hoping Bytel can overcome his issues and become this kind of player. In his underage year was putting up big numbers.

Hes a pure mid were screaming for a big body in there and he plays forward ruck.

Our club is dumb as ****.
He isn’t a mid but let’s play your game. Who moves out of the midfield. Dunstan is the obvious answer but I’ve seen nothing from acres to suggest that he is an inside mid. And then because he isn’t the smartest player he will confuse the rest of the side. I like acres but he is so overrated on here

Clark didn't have his best game, but for 57% TOG he had 9 contested possessions, 4 clearances, and almost kicked that ripping goal where he just wanted it more than anyone else. He sprayed a few kicks, but that was his first run at the level in a while, gotta give him more time now. He's a player that once he gets up to 80s TOG will be averaging around 15 CP a game. Also I know it's a long way off but Bytel will be a strong CP player also. Hanners, if he ever gets on the park will help in that department, as will Steven.

Got to keep getting games into Clark.

a few games last year he looked like he was breaking out, before his injury. Where was he playing then? I suspect on the wing. So far JB has one wing sewn up, the other however..

What was (again) evident was our lack of contested pig in the middle! It ain’t ever gonna be Dunstan. Maybe Steele however his contested numbers are not trajecting upwards. Gresh is leading the club with about 10.7 per game whilst other teams have multiple players +15! Marshall & Billings average is top 5 at the club. Must take a punt on someone like Hopper, who is out of contract at years end. Wave big coin in his face & see what happens.
Clark will be that man when he beefs up.

Only played half a game of football and ended up with 9 contested possessions and 4 clearances.

Dominated tac cup as soon as they gave him that role.

Agree- get games into Clark

As oppose to keeping it predictable and bombing on their heads every game like our other kids do ...
it’s be nice for him to actually play as an inside mid
Acres doesn’t have a physical bone in his body. Just because he’s tall doesn’t mean he’s suited to be an inside mid. This isn’t exactly the Collingwood midfield he can’t break into either, if it hasn’t happened by now it’s probably not going to happen.

And for the “he never gets a go in there” brigade start since his nice stint in there at the end of 2016 guys like Steele, Stevens, Ross, Dunstan and now Billings and Gresham have all been given a go and have gone past him and in time so will Clark. Surely by now he’s run out of excuses.

I agree with you there but I think we need more than 1 of that type and not many other guys are putting their hand up.

EDIT: apart from Gresh to be fair.

Yesterday felt like we reverted back to the bad old days of the past few years where we put in a lot of effort for little reward on the scoreboard.

During the JLT it looked like we had developed a more efficient direct game plan that would help our scoring but that seems to have gone out the window.

We weren't helped with our best mid in Steven being rested and the umpires doing us no favours but we still had enough chances to win that game.

We had 21 scoring shots to Freo's 16 scoring shots but we kicked 7 more points than them, turn a couple of those points into goals and we win the game.

We also made it difficult with our lack of forward structure along with our old tactic of bombing it into our forward 50 and just hoping for the best.

Realistically we aren't a finals quality team at the moment but neither are Freo, they were very ordinary yesterday and were lucky to escape with the win.

Marshall is a terrible forward. He either rucks or he doesn't play.

Yeah he's no good as just a pure forward, ruck is his best position and he has been impressive the last couple of weeks.

Pretty safe to say he has now nailed down the no.1 ruck role and should only get better with more experience.

A win gone begging if I ever saw it.

Very happy with our fight after looking well-beaten early on, huge tick. In the last two years that start becomes a 10 goal loss.

Thought we could have tried to use the space of the ground to hit shorter passes going forward? The long bombs are getting tiresome and far too predictable. Feels like we’re a little too defensive with our offense if that makes sense.

Frustrated but encouraged in a number of ways. Hawks will pose a sterner tactical test next week so looking forward to seeing how we bounce back.

We need to target Stephen Coniglio $$$$$$$$

A pity we wasted all those dollars on a cooked Hannebery.

We could try trading Hannebery for Coniglio at the end of the year but I don't think GWS are that stupid.

At the end of the day, we’ve gone over the WA and lost a game by 5 points we really probably should’ve won.

The only other home game Freo have played this year they won by ****ing 80 points.... make of that what you will but I think when we put it together, we are going to be a pretty solid team moving forward.

Can you tell me an example of a player being confused due to his crazy and erratic entries? Was the forward confused when his lead was actually honoured and Acres nailed him in the chest instead of moonballing it like the others?
I disagree. I think he has proven he can play outside.
He has been underwhelming but so were all the forwards.
It has been a constant theme for the last 5 years, he gets the ball, holds it too long, the forwards have led into space, not honoured, then its kicked to a contest.

I have seen it at training as well as games, but I know I won't convince his admirer's who for some inexplicable reason call him GOAT, when he isn't even a GOP.

And that's his problem, not physicality and limited defensive capability

I thought wing also, but I don't know if he has for the defensive role a wingman needs to play in a zone defence.

Also get him isolated by a speedy wingman and he would be badly exposed.

I think Acres is a poor mans Raph Clarke.

I admit he seems a bit too conscious of his surroundings when he's going for ground balls - I imagine that's what holds him back in getting the inside berth

He's a good utility though - or will be - just not the world beater we hoped he'd be...

Disappointing that we lost to Freo who are very ordinary side, especially considering they were missing their two first choice rucks and had their best player knocked out mid game. We were absolutely obliterated in the midfield - Jack Steven really is our most important player. I liked Marshall's game but holy hell our mids looked slow and ineffective.

Incredibly frustrating to kick 9.9 to Freo's 11.3 (taking out rushed behinds). And the amount of times we bombed it up the line to a pack was just infuriating. We absolutely have to bring Hind in who has shown an ability to break the lines and bring the ball in through the corridor.

Kent has been completely ineffective in the first three weeks and has to go. He constantly fumbles the ball, can't take an overhead mark to save himself and has 2 goals and 4 tackles from 3 games. Long comes back in for him. For a stoppage specialist Dunstan sure was useless in the middle. Time to stop persisting with the worst performing regular onballer in the AFL of the last four years and give someone else a run in the middle.

Next week I want to see

Out: Kent, Dunstan, Wilkie (has been okay but isn't needed against Hawthorn)
In: Long, Steven, Hind

B: Webster, Brown, Geary
HB: Hind, Battle, Savage
C: Sinclair, Steele, Acres
HF: Billings, Bruce, Gresham
F: Parker, Membrey, Long

Foll: Marshall, Steven, Ross
Int: Clark, Lonie, Newnes, McKenzie

Curious as to why you think Wilkie should be dropped? He's a lock for mine.

Sems pretty obvious to me that we wont contend until more of our U23 players actually develop quicker. Starting to frustrate me that other teams 2/3/4th year players are tearing it up...and more of ours than not are either injured or in the twos. Go and look at what Brisbanes equivalent kids are doing. Their equivalent of Acres, Dunstan..down to Philips, Rice etc etc are actually match winning players.

I felt the umpires were just bad for both teams. Too noticeable. I'm loving the refs in the nhl, this is what we should aim for
NHL were smart enough to long ago understand that fans don't like seeing the refs effect the product they're trying to deliver, which includes the biffo. The AFL shot themselves in the foot when they accepted the request from the umps to discard with "discretion" and assess on "technical correctness", allowing them to call every possible perceived infraction regardless of it's degree or relevance to play. Essentially, they lowered the bar and traded good officiating for officious officiating in that one moment. Those responsible need to be strapped to a ute and paraded at every ground for fans to throw hot pies and half bricks after every game. Hopefully one day a CEO will be brave enough to overhaul the umps and go professional. One day..

I thought Geary's game was excellent. Same with DMAC.

Same old problem going forward but a big performance from the team. Kent should go out for Steven and I'd like Long in the side for somebody. Dunno who though 'cos it sadly won't be Dunny.

Some info on Coff in the Zebs thread..
I know the theory behind what the club is trying to do, and Richo is still filthy at him for how he returned to the club, but my opinion, we’re going about it the wrong way. His confidence is shot and the attacking side of him is being crushed. He’s now at the stage of not being warranted for senior selection because he’s basically giving up in the reserves. Give him 2 weeks in the midfield with some freedom and see how he goes.

Same thing happened with White two years ago

That's a bit harsh, he has a similar loping running style to Raph Clarke but I haven't seen Acres make the sort of brainless mistakes Raph used to make.

Acres actually started the game quite well yesterday with a goal and another score involvement but then faded out of the game. I don't think he played any of the JLT games so maybe his match fitness isn't as good as it could be, I'd still keep him in the team as he at least offers us some versatility and X factor.
