I do know that there has been an increase it scoring from centre clearance across the AFL and having a ruckman who can actually direct the ball to his own players helps with that.
Marshall was good around the ground but his actual ruck work did us no favours. Needs to improve that that aspect of his game.
Got more to adavantage than the opposition. And as I said there has been no correlation between winning hit outs and getting clearances. In today’s footy you cannot have a tall non mobile player who cannot mark the ball

Its a major weakness of our list in total, we simply have far many players who cant take an over head mark or at least make a decent contest above their heads. It was pleasing however to see our defenders backing themselves yesterday and go for their marks. We havent had a midfielder who you would back in to win a contested mark since Lenny retired.

When you look at Freo's list and their height disparities and marking strengths over our blokes, it make even less sense with the bomb it long approach we served up yesterday. Some of the dumbest coaching I have seen come out of our coaches box yesterday - he simply costs us far too games!
We had 7 marks inside 50. They had one. Not sure their tall forwards had any impact marking wise. Haha On the coaching. Bad richo yesterday. Good rats previous 2 games.

Don't go all Chicken Little on us after the first loss Drake. Give it a couple more weeks at least.
Not panicking at all. If we can have that many below their best and still nearly pinch a game in Perth augurs well for the future. Disappointed but not surprised. Lyon got us with the same old tired tactics. Again.

16 scoring shots to 21.

Yet again our poor shooting at goal costs us. Fix it & we are a finals team.

Not withstanding this, when we won the contested ball the game was ours, the same for Fremantle. Most players had a fair game.

Maybe he came up short despite having a decent match.

I love the way we pick a player each week who isn't getting a game, hype up his form and then take dump on Richo because of it.
He’s the dump though. Everything that’s ever gone wrong in my life, I contribute to Richo’s coaching abilities.

Wasnt the best game of footy to watch yesterday.

My positive take on it
We didnt end up getting blown away when we were 30 points down
We should have won despite playing avg and actually losing in most of the factors, so something with our system is going well - most likely our defense that did an amazing job

Surprised how well Savage played - i was critical of him against gold coast and he actually defended well yesterday. Even took some good grabs.

Thought Mckenzie played better and made less brain fades than usual. Im usually critical of him.

Lones done well and is cementing his spot

Marshall is a revelation.

Gresh and Billings chance for AA if they keep up their form.

Thought the umpiring wasnt great in the 1st, but for the rest of the game wasnt too bad really.

Negatives
Cant afford to miss so many shots on goal
Happy with Dunstan as an inside mid, but lining up against Walters people will think were tanking..
Have to mix up the forward entry either from forward movement or lowering eyes. This is why i would prefer Long over Kent as he does also offer a lead up target and can take a mark as well.
Hoping our midfield takes a lesson from that as we got absolutely belted in centre clearance and a lot of Freos were very effective with Walters running rings around our guys.

Think Long in for Kent next week, hopefully Stuv in for someone else, not sure who to take out tho. Really like Clarke in the team, would also like Battle forward. Perhaps we can play Wilkie Chb? Dont mind Hind in either for his pace and disposal but you cant fit them all in

This is fun. But do you think the coaching was good round 1 out of interest? I thought it was good round 2.

Considering we got the win against the team that just beat the Doggies at Marvel yesterday, cant say it was bad.

And just for the sake of looking at experience on the park yesterday.

So in the past 3 weeks our average experience has been 69 games, 80 games and yesterday 74. At present it seems that under the 90 game average mark seems to have an impact on consistency of players for a full game. The only outlier has been the Suns. Even looking at a team like the Lions they are getting to that key stat area.

They used to say that getting to 50 games brought with it more consistency. It is becoming more the closer to 100 the more consistency becomes noticeable.

It was amazing to watch how much Mundy, Fyfe and Walters dominated us around the stoppage, especially centre clearances. We would love a guy with some nous in that area. Jack Steven is our best, but I'd love to see a few others step up. Hannebery will make us a lot better if he gets fit. I like some things about our midfield but they are not good stoppage players. Dunstan should work hard on that side of his game. Centre clearances cost us the game in my opinion.

I thought our backline was terrific yesterday and I felt that we lost the game in our forward line. There is no doubt that our delivery I50 needs to improve but my overwhelming feeling was that our forwards struggled to find the right balance between offence and defence.
IMO our forwards seem to spend so much time on the defensive aspect of their game i.e. applying pressure, zoning, etc that they were often too cooked to do the primary thing that they are in the team for i.e. kicking goals.
There were instances where our forwards gained possession, only to have to stop and wait for someone to get forward of the ball.
I suspect the long bomb into our forward line happens so regularly because our forwards are so spent that they don't have enough energy left to do what is required to open up the space I50. I think that fatigue was also a contributing factor to our low scoring accuracy. We nearly did enough and should not have let this game slip.

I reckon this is spot on regarding the balance between offense and defense of our forwards. Asides from physically tired from the defensive efforts, i think it is also mindset as the long kick in deep is a lot easier to defend than the missed pass to a lead. This could also be a hangover from lack of confidence last year. If your not confident in taking the mark or hitting the kick, you wont take go for the attacking option

Let me guess who isn’t happy. The ones not playing would be my guess. If rats was coach he would also have players not happy with him. Anyway the first 2 weeks was great coaching from rats and lade. This week it’s bad coaching by richo
They lowered their colors as a coaching group, collectively. We fell for the only trick Ross has in his worn out old beg. If Lyon was a magician, he'd still be sawing ladies in half and pulling rabbits out of hats.

Everyone give Acres a break ffs. He was playing as mid sized forward in a team where we kept bombing it into an outnumber over and over again the giving him a spell in the ruck. He’s by no means soft. Nor is he arrogant, this rubbish about him being arrogant and aloof is nonsense. Yes he didn’t play well. He pretty much missed a month of footy before the season started. Unfortunately he’s still finding his way back. Let’s use his strengths tho let him run through the middle chNge angles and take on tacklers that’s his value.

I thought he did okay, one goal and set up one.

And what trick was that. Maybe it was played on our terms because a lower scoring game suited us more the last time freo played at home they blew the opposition apart with high scoring footy. We lost because we wasted opportunities in front of goal not because we were out coached.

Same old, same old.

To be totally honest had even 1 of those OOB attempts at goal been on target we wouldnt be talking about Lyon. We had more shots on goal and should have had made them count.

Exactly. If we were so badly out coached how did we nearly beat them on their home deck and still manage to get within a kick after kicking poorly at goal

They took 11 marks inside 50 to our 7 and had 4 more contested and 21 more marks around the ground to ours?

As I have said previously in this thread Richo is fine when his pre game plans work and absolutely shocking when they dont. He simply is not a match day coaches backside.

We could've and should've won comfortably. We played the game on Lyon's terms, which is the only way Freo could beat us.

So he was that badly out coached that we got within a goal at their home ground after kicking very poorly for goal. The last time freo played there they won by 80. Strange we could get so close with such poor coaching. Or is the truth you are that biased against him you would know if he coached poorly or not. Just out of interest what were the poor tactics apart from him telling the players to miss shots at goal

I though collectively it wasn’t their best day as the usual suspects tore us apart.

Now you could argue that we had few options to go with guys like Walters but it would have been nice to see someone at least try. We’ve touched on this before when discussing coaches having favourites, in reality we have no idea what the instructions were.

The Lyon cage. It's still about, only with a new coat of paint. Numbers behind the ball, suffocate the opposition. They won by kicking 71 points, for goodness sake. Classic RTB. We should've won easily. If you can't score more than 66 in perfect conditions you've been out thought and outmanouevered by the opposition. Think about it.

Letting Walters run loose after he smashed us last time wasn't exactly the best move.
