Amazon Football League...

AFL in talks with global tech giants

AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan has taken a team to the United States on a covert fact-finding mission, with at least one global streaming service looming as a major player in the game’s next broadcast rights deal.

The Age can reveal that McLachlan has taken fixture boss Travis Auld and the league’s head of strategy, Walter Lee, on a tour of the US, with the trio set to meet tech giants Amazon, Google and Facebook in coming days.

Amazon’s headquarters is in Seattle, while Facebook and Google are in California.

It will not be the first time the AFL has made contact with the companies, as cashed-up streaming services look to invest in the broadcasting of Australian sport.

With the broadcast rights deal involving Channel Seven, Foxtel and Telstra expiring at the end of 2022, industry insiders suggest the involvement of streaming in the next deal is not just a possibility but a reality.

They'll probably tell Channel 7 to get stuffed after the whole Marvel Stadium name fiasco

I wouldn't mind seeing an AFL streaming service

Could live sport be the next step for Facebook, Netflix, YouTube or Google?

It's a shit rule because it goes against the entire spirit of the game (ie winning the football ahead of your opponent). But if you were a player, why would you bother going to ground these days? All you do is risk giving away either a free kick for holding the ball or a free kick for contact below the knees. If you can't get to the ball first without going to ground, don't even bother.
You can win the ball ahead of your opponent by not going to ground, there is nothing tough about going to ground, in fact it's tougher to stay on your feet and take the bump

My boss is a Hawks supporter. I asked how enjoyed Chad's game. He was amazed and said it was "Cyrilesque". Won't be long before the Vics all realise how good he actually is.

I'm not convinced one approach is tougher than the other. But staying on your feet is certainly the superior approach from a rules perspective.

Yes exactly, the really alarming thing is this rule is indicative of the mindset at AFL house these days. I appreciate that there have been instances where players have been injured by opponents sliding low into their legs but surely the umpires can rule tripping or players can be cited for unduly rough play etc. if they are deemed to be deliberately taking a players legs out. We do not need a blanket rule that mitigates against players who display what this game is all about- courage.

The people running AFL football atm are changing the very nature of it.

We all knew that once he played one game at a big Vic club these comparisons would occur.
He believes it too, strutting around big time after the game.
I will give Clarko credit, whispering sweet nothings in Chads ear year in year out worked.

SEN is good listening this morning.

Lol Boomer Harvey:
“Polly had brought some fantastic leadership and some great ideas from Port Adelaide”

Cornes on SEN said crows would have pick 3 & 6 right now if the draft was today.

In other words, Carlton's & Crows first.

This is the third instance of media getting this wrong I've heard in the last couple of weeks. It appears many have forgotten that this year's crows first was part of the trade last year.

Up until today I thought it was simply the usual crows media spin but to have Kane say it suggests people have forgotten.

They also fail to mention that PA rejected the deal last year, in favour of drafting Duursma.

Basically, at the time, we rated Duursma better than upgrading our Rd1 pick this year with our late 1st last year and Carlton rated stocker better than the top 10 this year.

May not be as big of an upgrade as the Crows thought at the time!

Why can't the media get it right?

To me there's a nice theme for Cornes to promote here, but he has so far totally overlooked it.

He could be stirring the pot big time with it (which he loves doing)

It’s pretty simple isn’t it ! They swap first round picks this year. So crows get 3 and Carlton 6 (on today’s ladder positions)

Yes I heard that and thought the same..it was a swap of firsts wasn’t it? Hope it comes back to bite them on the proverbial.

Don’t worry about it... the cow melts on draft night when they actually realise will be beautiful!

Highlights?
I can’t remember much now.
A lot of Crows digs including Eddie is not suited to the new 666 as they can’t use the weapon they have used in past to use him off back of square to get him into the game.
That stupid comment about Crows having 2 firsts next year.
What a massive loss Charlie Cameron is but the other zillion players that have moved to other clubs.
Some stuff about North and Polly.
Interviewing Rozee.
Comparing Rozee to Fyfe, which I really hate..just let him play as himself FFS.
Other stuff..I have forgotten now.

Ten-second research:

In: Carlton's 2019 First
Out: WL's #19; WL's 2019 First

At the moment that’s looking like a pretty fair deal for Carlton...

At the time it looked like Crows were giving Carlton pick 19 from last year and pick 18 from this year to gain pick 1 this year.

But

I actually think Carlton could win a few this year and I am not sure Crows will be top of the ladder. Still plenty of time to see how it pans out.

So just to be clear, because I really didn't take a lot of notice at the time, the Crows swapped first round picks? SO Carlton get there's and the Crows get Carlton's?

Cause after reading the article that the Crows were trying to lure Grundy out of Collingwood, I was thinking what in the hell could they do to get this to happen? Firstly, Grundy seems to be the kind of guy that is totally immersed in the Malbun is the greatest hipster city in the world schtick, there's no way Collingwood would want to let him go and what could the Crows offer to even get close to landing him (Grundy becomes free agent in 2021). Was thinking that the 2 first round draft picks would have to be part of the deal (but now you are telling me that they don't just get Carlton's pick, it's a swap) which does make a huge difference. The Crows would also have to offer $1 mill plus to get him, something which they won't do any rate.

It will be funny watching Crows supporters getting their hopes up though as Grundy uses them to up his next contract at the Wobblers.
