Young developing key forwards need to be given the time and confidence to learn their craft at the top level.

We *ed around with his development far too much at the start of his career and he is about 20 games behind where he really should be. When you have someone as gifted as him, you need to persist and not spit the dummy when he has some down games. Your focusing far too much on 'stats' rather than what the potnetial output is.

Okay. I get it. So many posts about how the club ruined his development, how we didn't kick it to him when tex was in the team, how when tex was out he was forced to get the best defender, how our inside 50's were shit, etc.

But what changed between round 10 and round 11. Thats the real interesting topic. What actually changed. Our team was just as shit and the circumstances were the same.

What I cant believe is that we keep persisting with Murphy and McHenry but we wouldn't with Fog.
Nearly everyone could see he has 10 x the talent of those lads

Brilliant post. It got the likes from our father son combo and the guy with the biggest cranium on this forum.

Only problem is Since 2020 and under Nicks - games played:

McHenry - 46
Murphy - 41
Fog - 41

You lot are something else.

He kicked a goal.

The thing with Fog, even in those early weeks where he was terrible is he was doing a lot of the grunt work needed to be a successful forward. He was leading more, and doing more of the shitwrecking stuff a key forward needs to do (which was evident in his SANFL stint as well). It wasn't that in round 11 the penny dropped, the penny had dropped in pre-season, he just wasn't getting rewarded for it (outside of round 3... but I think he knew his number was up once Gollant got hot).

Once he gets that goal, the pressure valve released on him and he's been putting up borderline elite key forward numbers since.

The likely mistake was dropping him in round 3, but equally, the club had to reward the on field performance from Himmelberg and Gollant, so it's a damned if you do, damned if you don't scenario.

His confidence wasn't sky high after kicking 2.0 goals in round 1?

He looked slow and unfit those first 5 games. He was constantly playing behind his opponent which resulted in him giving away twice as many free kicks as he had scoring shots in those first 5 games.

Daaaamn STO back at it again with another great take.

He was pretty terrible the first 5 games. He had 5 scoring shots in his first 5 games and kicked 2.3. Even if he converts those 3 missed chances he is still averaging a putrid 7 touches a game and 1 goal per game.

If anyone wants increasingly demented averages derived from deliberately curated samples we already know where to look mate.

Suddenly got fit about half way through the first quarter of the Geelong game.

Boring. Posting the exact same and already answered enquiry on endless repeat as if it hasnt been dealt with. Even you can do better.

Ahh good, a new contender for stupidest stat. What happens when you discount games missed through injury?

The strawman won't get more persuasive on the ninth repeat.

T'was not me providing all those excuses.

I think you are correct though. It was all those issues you listed that resulted in him kicking 3 behinds in rounds 2 and 3 (after kicking 2.0 in round 1). Then in the 1st quarter after against Geelong he kicked a goal and all was magically right.

Just lying about what people are saying is a poor strategy when the entire conversation is in writing.

Confidence that you belong at AFL level is a wonderful thing.

You can tell by the way he now strutts on the field he knows he is an AFL player. We are now getting the repeat efforts to influence the game more & better understanding of his role. This was not the case at the beginning of the year.

The coaches need to understand some players need more encouragement than others as don't have the self belief. Imo, Jones is another in this category.

Not really, he was still getting to a lot of contest but trying to out body his opponent so he was the instigated and as usual always get ping by the umpire. Nicks wanted him to go at the ball more when he was recalled to the side which he has been doing for the last few months.

Fog becoming a legitimate weapon in his own right has two added benefits.

1. Tex might not always get the best defender
2. Tex will be able to extend his career as he's not getting as smashed each week.

Tell you what is excellent about Fog taking a speccy every once in a while is this, defenders will not want to get sat on like McGovern. He puts doubt into their mind, he beats you on the lead and in the air. Fog has to be the most exciting player we’ve had since Betts

Some, like me, incorrectly thought he could only really blossom once Tex wasn't playing but I think having Tex alongside him is really important for his development. By the time Tex retires in 2 to 4 years this kid will be 25, confident and in his prime. Look out!!

Like Murray, he puts doubt in the oppositions mind whether he is in the air on the ground. They both play to hurt.

Thank you.
How many times has McHenry been dropped in his career ?
How many times has Fogarty been dropped in his career ?

It's been a slow, frustrating burn, but he's finally arrived.

Just realised why Fog was more noticeable last night. He’s likely to get both the mark of the year and goal of the year nomination in the one game. We haven’t had that in a fair while have we? When would be the last time, Betts?
