He might need to accept that he isn’t worth what GC are paying him to extend his AFL career. Can’t see anyone taking him on at $800k a year, even with pick 7 attached.

We've been paying Sloane more than that for no better a footballer and we weren't being given draft capital for the pleasure. If it's 2 x $800k, given our list and we're getting pick 7, then I couldn't accept quick enough.

The thing worth remembering is that he'd need to want to come here, which I find hard to believe possible. He's already getting paid a lot, he isn't from here and we aren't competing for a flag. Besides being a lock for best 22 we wouldn't have a lot of draw for someone like him.

He’s about to be paid a lot (doesn’t mean he is yet), the very fact that GC are doing a salary cap dump is likely because his contract is backended at $800k X 2

No one who’s currently competing for a flag will have the cap space to take that on, considering he isn’t exactly first choice player at GC at the moment. Far too much risk, and he’s not going to accept less $$ to smooth out the rest of his contract

If he’s financially motivated and wants a game, we’re a no-brainer. If he wants the bright lights of Melbourne not much we can do

If Bowes comes across, can’t his contract be renegotiated? We aren’t locked in to the terms GC currently have. Maybe instead of $1.6M over 2, renegotiate something over 3-4.

Absolutely no point in doing that. Why wouldn’t he just stay in GC for 2 years and earn what is due to be paid to him.

If he renegotiates it’ll be something like 4-5 years where he’ll get paid his $800K x 2 and then $500K plus for his remaining years, and THEN we could ask to smooth it out over the whole period

His pay is locked as he has a contract. Worse case he stays at GC. No club will take on his overpriced deal, GC will have to pay half of it as Collingwood did with Treloar. I doubt they are giving up pick 7 even if a club took on his pay.

the more of it you pay, the more draft resources that you get from GC. Depends on how bad GC's cap is, madness they have a problem at all given they surely had set aside $600k or so for Rankine.

Its not just dodgy salary cap practices - one of the biggest issues is the players want to live here in melbourne so its easier to attract players

If that happens, the AFC should find their balls and take the AFL to court, as the level of manipulation and rule-bending to keep certain Victorian teams strong would be totally blatant and out of control.

He has leverage as GCS are using pick 7 as a "sweetener" so even over those 3-4 years with a new contract you would think he would want an average of at least $600-650K.

Nope if we pick up Bowes and pick 7 from GSC assuming he says to them make me a Crow we pick up the contract with the huge $$$ that are back ended

Should be the opposite. With Gibbs we had to buy out the cheap part of a front ended contract whilst still paying full value for expected future performance. Gibbs came only for the $, this bloke has the big $ guaranteed already.
