I asked Cal Twomey how Tevita Rodan qualifies for Essendon's NGA if Pacific Island nations aren't in the program. He ghosted me :ghost:

My memory is that he asked Sydney not to match as he wanted to stay in Melbourne. Only agreed to be a father/son if bid on by another interstate club.

Edit: found a link
Dunkley only wanted to stay in Melbourne as that's where his sister was living at the time

So as I understand it, we are looking at:
  • Dougie Cochrane, likely 2026 #1 pick, NGA
  • Zemes Pilot, likely 2027 top 5 pick, NGA
  • Louis Salopek, likely 2027 first rounder, F/S
  • Tevita Rodan, likely 2027 first rounder, F/S
Tevita Rodan is the one I'm unsure of on whether he actually picks us. All signs pointing to Salopek picking us and Pilot is tied to us. So Cochrane is a case of whether Port get draft access to him or not

It's a shame the points system has been adjusted.

I can't think of a player off the top of my head that's refused the father son thing can you?
Nick Blakey could have gone to North or Brisbane (dad played about 130 games for Fitzroy) under father son rules, but because dad John had been a long term assistant coach in Sydney, Nick living in Sydney joined the Swans academy and picked the swans as his preferred club so think it was Essendon who bid pick 10 for him in 2018.

Josh Dunkley could have gone to the Swans under father son, but dad Andrew had a falling with the swans after he was delisted in 2002, he didn't attend function when he was inducted to their Hall of Fame a decade later, and Josh said he didn't want to go to Sydney as he grew up in Melbourne and fall out with dad.

Edit looks like link in post #4,324 says he did nominate at the last minute but Andrew Dunkley when he was on Open Mike said Sydney wouldn't pick him - I thought he meant was told before the draft, but looks like he meant at the draft.

Mark Murphy was another potential F/S pick but turned it down.

I wonder what Port's draft and list strategy is gonna be in the next few years? Big Doug seems to be THE utility. Seems very versatile at any spot and could be anything. Zemes Pilot if he chooses AFL is a tall forward and still growing. Louis and Tevita are mids?

Is there any other prospects linked to Port? Doesn't Shaun have another son in Percy eligible in the 2027 draft? How is he tracking and does he have enough upside to get drafted? What is his position at under 16's?

To add to this, you also have Ben Francou (Half-Forward) this year and Gill Wakelin (Tall Defender) who have started quite well so far. If they continue this trajectory, can see them being draftable prospects. Gill specifically is an interesting one to follow because given his role, he doesnt get many disposals but from the looks, has some good traits as a tall lockdown defender.

It’s impossible to tell this far out.

Remember people saying the same about Rome and Louie?

Cochrane is the safest bet , and he’s closer to draft age and playing under 18’s already and so utterly dominant.

People need to get real about Cochrane.

There’s zero chance he’s gonna be tied to us in the draft. Just zero.

It would require the afl, crows , sanfl and the other afl sides to all do us a favour and roll over.

Anyone who thinks that’s happening is in lala land.

Even if they prove indigenous heritage

1. He’s metro based and Sa teams don’t have acres to metro ngas

If this was up for debate you don’t think port or crows would have done it for rankine or nwm?

2. He would fall into crows zone anyway, and anyone who thinks we could swing a highly rated player out of crows zone and into ours if they were draft eligible must be certifiably insane.

As I’ve said before, the only logical reason we would be seeking to add him to our nga is to get him inside the club and training with us… which is valuable in its own way to both parties.

Would recommend you read the separate thread on Dougie Cochrane if you are interested on why he would be aligned with Port.

- The indigenous heritage is now proven, hence why he's in the Indigenous Academy now

- Rankine couldn't have qualified in 2018, because the metropolitan zone was only divided between Crows and Port in 2020. NWM would've qualified in 2021 and likely to Crows, but fortunately, no picks inside the top 40 were allowed to be matched from 2021 onwards so Crows missed out.

- SA teams do have access to metro NGA since 2020 - See https://www.afl.com.au/news/654659/...-top-nga-prospect-may-not-make-it-to-the-dees. You can also see the precise areas in https://www.afl.com.au/draft/nga-clubacademies

- Cochrane also played for Port Districts until u14s and then moved to Centrals from u16s. The only contentious bit that is a bit grey is that whether you account for residence or the football club when it comes to Zones. I haven't had it confirmed but Macca19 in the other thread had from the club that its residence. And I assume Cochrane is living within the Port zone or else this whole attempt would be stupid.

- The only caveat here is that AFL are re-thinking the metropolitan area split in SA. Now I would say the chances of them changing the metro split are quite slim but if it does happen, and Cochrane's residence is in Crows' zone then you're right, Crows will have access to him.

1. He’s metro based and Sa teams don’t have acres to metro indigenous ngas (do for multicultural metro ngas)
Slight clarification.
