In his third year and hasn't improved his game in basically any particular aspect since he was drafted. There's being patient with players as they develop, and then there's Harry Barnett.

Obeanie, as an absolute hopeless dropkick myself, I admire your willingness to go in to bat for the hopeless dropkicks

How many other rucks in their first 3 seasons are running around dominating against mature opposition?
think you may have wanted to do some research on this one.
compared to a few young listed rucks around the country:

Joe Pike, 20 years old. avg 23 HOs, 11 disposals, 4.5 clearances @ Cats VFL
Max Knobel, 20 years old, avg 22 HOs, 10 disposals, 2.5 clearances @ Suns VFL
Vigo Visentini, 19 years old. avg 27 HOs, 17 disposals, 3 clearances @ Dons VFL
Lachlan Smith, 19 years old. avg 37 HOs, 5 disposals, 4.5 clearances @ Dogs VFL

Harry Barnett, 21 years old. avg 7 HOs, 8 disposals (not sure on clearances, cannot find, but im guessing fk all) @ Beagles WAFL.

Sadly, Harry is miles off and against weaker ruck oppo compared the above guys.
I understand he hasnt played exclusively ruck, but he hasnt done well elsewhere either and his stats in his 2nd year as ruck were even more horrendous.

The most startling thing about Harry, is that he actually hasn't shown any progression in 3 years, in fact his stats look worse than his first year.

I like to think of myself as someone who always backs kids in to develop, but in Harry's case, it's hard to justify him on the list moving forward. Love to eat crow on this, but i doubt it.

I just don't like writing off kids after 3 years.

Especially 203cm rucks.

McCarthy looks locked in.

I’m still a fan of Dennis for a second pick (assuming we are now taking one). He hasn’t come on as much as we would like but I’m keen on the idea of having another developing KPD with AFL traits.

A lot of KPD get plucked from nowhere and I think he is worth the shot in an AFL system.

I’d still like AReid to move back and Shanahan forward at WAFL level. JWilliams into KPF at AFL level to work with Oscar for the rest of the year.

So, despite the loosh telling the media the scan was all clear, the truth is somewhere at the other end of the spectrum. You don't fully dislocate the glenohumeral joint, that has to be put back in by the medicos, and not disrupt the labrum and capsule of the joint. With 14 rounds to go, IF he avoids surgery, and that's a big if, he won't player until after the bye. If he needs surgery, we need to find that out today so we can have 2 cracks at the MSD.

Barnett's come out and said if ge doesn't win the first tap its going to be a bad game. Mentally weak

Ok so apparently Jake's out for season.

We have to go into the MSD for 2 now. Take the tigers VFL player and Clancy Dennis.

his words were more like, when he wins first tap he feels like "im on today", in a casual chat on coast to coast. Whilst he certainly hasn't shown to be mentally strong, some of the stuff that players said really gets put out of context and snowballs on BF, same TK and not loving footy, which wasn't quite the case, more so not loving losing all the time.

AFL ruck drafted needs time to mature.

Anyone shocked to be reading that?

I certainly am not.

Rucks take time to mature and build confidence. That's just how it works unless you are a unicorn like a Nic Nat.

Have you actually watched his WAFL games?

There is "developing rucks" and then there's whatever the hell Barnett is.

Another year on an AFL list isn't going to fix his hunger for the contest. Or the fact he reacts 4 seconds slower than any other player on the field, which a good third are amateurs. Or that he's going backwards each season and he was a better player when he first arrived 3 years ago.

Is there a possibility of getting both McCarthy and Sellwood? I do feel like we would go for more variety in positions if we took 2 picks.

Splinters on Sen said we would pick Selwood over Murdock but it’s very unlikely he will be still available.

Procrastinating... so here are my (amateur) observations on a few WAFL players who have nominated for the MSD.

Sounds like McCarthy is locked in with our first pick, so I guess one of these guys could be an option if we open up a second pick.

Michael Sellwood – 21 – 186cm HBF
Pros:
Prolific interceptor and excellent one-on-one defender. Composed and safe ball-user on the rebound.
Cons: Cautious with his kicking. Slows down the pace of the game. Pretty good leaper, but lacks burst with his running.

Kane Bevan – 21 – 192cm Mid
Pros:
Powerful extractor at the coal face. Wins his own clearances. Dominated U21 vs U18 game and has improved his output every year at League level.
Cons: As a junior, lacked pace and damage with his disposal. A few posters here have vouched that he has changed that.

Jack Cleaver - 21 - 189cm Mid/Utility
Pros:
Cut his teeth as a HBF with good ball use, but has played predominately as a mid this year. Likes to lower his eyes and hit up short, accurate passes. Has steadily improved every year playing League. Sometimes forays forward and hits the scoreboard.
Cons: Not sure what his exact role in the AFL would be. Don’t think he’s a pure mid. Maybe a bit vanilla as a HBF?

Jaxon Artemis - 19 - 182cm HBF/Wing
Pros:
Endurance, speed and kicking. Willing to run hard off the ball to maintain structure and spacing. Has transitioned straight out of colts into League and been effective. Perfect type for the dead wing or a half back flank.
Cons: Small sample size, only 4 games of League. Low production. Can disappear at times.

William Cassidy - 20 - 179cm FP
Pros:
Pretty interesting player. Looks like he played mid in his final season of Colts. Plays as a pressure forward in League. Has snagged 12 goals in 7 games, and averages 5 tackles this year.
Cons: Somewhat unusual development curve, has never really stood out until this year. Plays a position where we have 3 upcoming NGAs (Walley, Williams, McGlade) + Champion in the WAFL. Ceiling limited to a role player.

Otis Harvey - 19 - 183cm Mid/FP
Pros:
Has that knack for bouncing off defenders and whirling through congestion. Reminds me a bit of Zac Bailey. Tackles hard. Kicks goals. Absolutely dominant in ressies, then had an immediate impact on debut in League.
Cons: Probably a bit too risky taking a kid off their ressies performances. Has only played 2 games of League. Good debut (14 touches, 9 tackles, 2 goals), much quieter in the second game.

Oscar Hines-Baston - 20 - 178cm BP
Pros:
Began as a lockdown defender, has expanded his offensive impact this year. Outstanding athletic traits. Has made clear strides forward every year.
Cons: Bit raw skillwise. More athlete than footballer? Was an undrafted NGA and we passed on listing him as a Cat-B.

I thought the Xray showed no broken bones (hence the players positivity) and they were waiting for the MRI

Barnett defenders don't watch WAFL I'm assuming

BBW showed way more in his development years than Barnett has, even Livingstone has shown more

Williams at a young age was promising. Barnett was gifted two AFL games but have been useless. In fact Barnett at 19 was a better player than he is now. He regressed badly last season and the falls just got worse this season

Considering I live in Darwin. No.

Nor watched any online.

Just basing it on the average that rucks take time. And the glass half full approach.......and hope we haven't blown a pick mindset.

Have you seen much of him mate?
I'd love to hear your thoughts
Not really sorry, I don't watch VFL.
I saw one game vs afl academy but he was very quiet that day.

I know someone connected to his mum, great young man so passes the good character test.

Yeah look I think we all had the same view as yourself at one point over the last 12 months.

Nobody likes cutting losses and moving on from a developing ruck, especially one that was so universally highly rated and not somebody we just plucked out of thin air.

Every leadup to the draft suggested Barnett was a solid, blue chip selection. That's what makes it worse. With our list we really needed him to come on.

But unfortunately as others have said it just hasn't planned out. He just gets worse and worse. If you find yourself ever watching the WAFL games on 7 Plus you'll see for yourself. He's so far off the mark it's not even funny. When you've got amateurs, not WAFL players, actual Beagles top ups looking more comfortable and putting him to shame despite him being in a professional football environment as his day job... You're cooked.

The Barnett contract extension was probably a little bit silly in hindsight. I get the club probably expected him to develop on a linear path, but there were signs last year he was not coming on. Now it's time to cut our losses and put that development and effort into another young ruckman.
