Why regret?
Any rival sporting code that shows a hint of being popular or gathering momentum is seen as a threat by the AFL.
A World Cup finals campaign for the Socceroos in the middle of the 2026 footy season is something they would much prefer didn’t happen.

This is an organisation who released their fixture for the 2023 season at 6am in the middle of the biggest game the Socceroos had played in nearly 20 years dont forget.

That explains the disappointment, but regret implies that there was an action the AFL could have taken to prevent the qualification. I thought there might have been some story I'd missed.

Wouldn't think there would be too much clash with AFL and next FIFA World Cup in North America. Be mostly complimentary timeslots for people who like to have a gawk at both.

Maybe weekend timezones for a Sat/Sun AFL game in the early afternoon on the East Coast of Australia might clash with a World Cup soccer game played at 7pm-9pm on the West Coast of USA or Central USA/ Mexico (which would be the day before - i.e. Saturday afternooon here would be still be Friday Night there).

Wouldn't be that much different to when the Olympics are on during an AFL season, the Ashes series in England, or the World Test Championship next week.

Mid-season AFL can be a bit of a lull anyway, plus for free to air viewers only viewers it gives something else to watch live on a Saturday.

The Bears will be done in 5 years when the novelty wears off this shit for brains sport
Each to their own though?

Is Perth finally having representation in a large national sports competition not a good thing?

Depends if the NRL are prepared to pour endless money into a franchise in a non-NRL state like GC and GWS, where no one really cares all that much.

The failed experiment with the Western Reds suggests the NRL is happy with a quicky on the first date rather than a long term relationship.

NRL is as exciting as lawn bowls live. If they can get existing NRL fans to support a second side, they’re on a winner; otherwise…

There's a huge NZ, SA and UK population here that will rock up (wasn't here when Reds were here though, so may be the same again). They need to play opposite week to Force, and most rugby bods will watch both codes. NRL are doing a lot in schools too, reckon it might have legs this time, as long as they're competing early.

Those countries are rugby union countries, far less interest in league, if any at all. They’d be much more likely to get behind Force than an NRL team. I was brought up on union and will watch a union match with only a very loose passing interest in league. I hope the Bears do well, but it’s going to need a huge effort (and money) by all involved.

Welsh boy myself, so very much on the Union train, too, but there's definitely interest in League. Also a fair few East coasters over here who are League crazy. May be a Force scenario where the Kiwis are all in and then swap shirts when their side comes to town, but I reckon the Bears will go ok.

Agree with you re: money though, they'll need supporting for a while and concessions to guarantee competitiveness/success.

Most rugby people I know are rugby people, not leaguies. Different tribes.

League sucks sweaty nuts.

Sorry. Would rather watch the Glory stink it up and I won’t be watching them either.

League sucks almost as much ass as NFL.

what no fairytale?
"Rewilding WA with Koala Bears"
Koalas reintroduced to the SW forests after 10000 years...
...Drop Bears?
The drop bears would have been a much better name and the character on the jumper could been so scary!

Opportunity lost!!!!

NBA fans, who's your pick for the championship?

OKC have just tied it up 1-1 after an impressive choke in the first game. They're the more talented team but stranger things have happened in finals.

It would take a serious injury to the likes of SGA, Williams et al for the Hoosiers to win
