A man who can see the bigger picture at last. That does makes sense.

I think in all likelihood that's the plan .Smith has shown enough to indicate he could be a good ruckman. Plus he has the size and the time.

Draper hasn't got a whole lot going for him as the top dog. But as a second stringer he'd charge in there , throw his weight around , and provide some physical presence. Just playing a role instead of the pressure he's faced at Essendon.

In a way we are not only getting a replacement for the Sam Day role, but we are getting TWO!

Considering both Allen and Draper's injury histories, and our lack of near future depth in that role, it really is a bit of a master stroke.

Going to be so funny when Draper is here, we all love him and he's a serviceable ruck.

Tom14 needs to commit and do a Blueiris and just rag on Draper no matter what he does.

Or Bear Dancer. Weird he hasn't been around since Joe retired.

The only reason I want us to get Draper is to see you have to eat your words or just flat out spew every week Tom.

We need more entertainment on here.

What's not to like about Draper ? I saw him kick a goal once that no big man in the game would get close to. That was enough to convince me. We need to do whatever it takes.

I'm even prepared to tick off on the haircut.
The haircut has got to go.

Just did a little self exercise (with a few best case liberties) for our best 23 for the future. Removing our older fellas.

Wilmot Payne Kiddy
Fletcher Harris Starc*
Berry Dunkley Marshall
Rayner Hipwood Bailey*
Morris Allen Lohmann

Smith (Draper perhaps) W. Ashcroft McCluggage

L. Ashcroft, Annable, Ah Chee*, Answerth, Gallop.

*for players I couldn't be surprised if we lost in the next few seasons.

------

I never like thinking too far ahead cos so much can change i.e. new coach, management, gamestyle, hunger levels etc and it can blow up fast. But as a realistic base that is pretty amazing for our future after contending for so long.

We'll lose a few so maybe the best 23 is a bit optimisitic, but we'll get good compensation back for most of those who may leave too given the ages (and maybe tassie overpaying early) & it'll be around fitting around the edges still. Not to mention that our old blokes may hang around & give us a bit for a bit longer too.

Really praying we can keep our organisation to the Cats, Swans & Pies level, if we do we're set for a quite a bit it seems!

They expanded it too quickly no doubt, but I think you’re forgetting what the standard was initially. Teams couldnt even do basic kick mark games. The standard has improved drastically imo, albeit still a long way to go.
The AFLW ran at a $55 million loss last year - only 3 things can happen, (1) that is considered acceptable (2) more people start watching the women at games and on TV (3) less teams lessen the cost.

No sorry, can't accept No.3 at all. You are trying to kill off the most brutal, individual role in the game. I prefer Lethal's call that there be no center circle, and the rucks go back to the old days. On FOX's "On the couch" he showed some insane footage of Clark Keating smashing into the ruck in those days; we need that back, pronto.
IIRC the rule change occurred because too many ruckmen were doing knees at the centre bounce.

I would like to see the line go away and see old time ruck craft again.

I love these kind of future scenario wishful side selections, players 25 years of age and under or a Lions academy player as of now, looking ahead to circa 2029, not my First Crack at it:D >

Darcy Wilmot(21), Jack Payne(25), Keidean Coleman(25).
Noah Answerth(25), Luke Lloyd(19), Brandon Starcevich(25).

Henry Smith(22), Will Ashcroft(21), Daniel Annable(17A).
Sam Marshall(19), Jaspa Fletcher(21), Levi Ashcroft(18).

Zac Bailey(25), Logan Morris(20), Kai Lohmann(22).
Raphael Geesu(17A), Ty Gallop(19), Cam Rayner(25).

Bench- Zane Zakostelsky(19), Matthew Owen(16A), Bruce Reville(24), Luke Beecken(24), Will McLachlan(20).

I also really like Fergus McFadyen(17A). McCluggage(27), Berry(27), Ah Che(27), Hipwood(27) could all still be playing in 2029 in their early 30s.

On list now, likely delisted or traded- Reece Torrent(19), Darcy Craven(21), Shadeau Brain(21), James Tunstill(22), Dev Robertson(24).

I'm aware of all of this. Draper is a meme, not a ready to go ruck.
I am not his biggest fan but a mature body with decent athleticism that can compete very well isn't a negative if Big O has hit the wall.
