2024 esque in how they slowed down late and went into their shell. Playing prevent for a whole quarter without any dare or desire to use the handball or corridor. Frustrating.

Horrendous non call saves us at the end.

Hope like hell that’s not an ACL for Johnson, but had the trademark turn and non contact collapse.

Yeah, the Johnson injury didn't look like anything good, either Achilles or Knee going down without any contact wasn't good.

Man, we are such a loser football club right now...can we please f*cking win SOMETHING?! I could give a rats ass if it was a pre season game or not, that team had like 2 behinds at half time and we were lucky to not lose.
On my ****ing kneeees here

Shouldn't worry too much about a pre-season game on a terrible, wet surface. We got an idea of where everyone's at, and where we still suck... a lot of which can be fixed, because we had a lot of people playing the wrong positions on purpose.

Now go watch Sarah Gigante win the Tour de France.

The Eagles, the Beagles and the Weagles - nary a win in sight. What a waste of a day!
With the Weagles, fitness is still an issue. No run in the 2nd half, and beaten for aggression too.
Poor decision making, poor handball, and poor kicking depth. Kicking out from full Back was diabolical.
need someone who can roost the ball - Painter?
The broadcast was poor too - often out of focus.
Thought Rentsch was the best of our girls. She will be a gun.

One difference was, Dogs got on top, but only scored 2 goals. Defending much better and much higher intensity when the games against us than previously.

Loosing Johnson will be a problem though. She was taking Rentsch's position in the backline, freeing her up to go further up the ground.

I like how they named Smith as one of the Eagles best even though she didn't even play tonight. Absolutely on brand for the current day West Coast Eagles football club.

General thoughts on the game -

Johnson/Painter were both good and showed their strengths. Both are both solid units (Painter will be demolishing people in her mid 20s) but both look similarly slow legspeed wise. Not glacial or anything - but as a reference it feels like how before this season Harry Edwards looked too slow - his fitness/game sense has improved drastically and it's now no longer an issue. With Johnson coming off a year out and Painter in her first year, don't think it's an active concern and with high level fitness they'll look a lot faster. But this year can see it being frustrating at times. Both are really long kicks so it'll be less of an issue with the ball and more on the spread. I like that Johnson gets angry, she's a little bit nasty which is a pleasant surprise. Really nervous about Johnson getting hurt. Hopefully just a horrible cork or something like that, fingers crossed.

Cleaver delivered the signs I was keen on, first half especially. Contested really well, backed up contests, looks so much more of a footballer than she did last year. Supremely athletic but it was hard to notice last year with her just not getting involved. When she's actually contesting it she looks like the player we were excited about. Had a few fumbles and skill errors but would bounce back and get a hand into the scrap afterwards, where last year she'd stand still.

Rentsch was awesome. Looked like our smoothest tap reader and like that she'll get angry. Few massive tackles. She lines up players from 20m away and hits them at full speed. She was also our best in the last quarter when the heat was on. Would like to see us use her more in bouncing kicks to space along the wing.

Dalgleish is a scrapper. Not sure how clean she is in space but could be a really good pressure small for us.

Roberts still a million times more skilful than anyone else which gives her more options than opposition expect. She hit up Bushby for a goal assist in the 2nd off less than a quarter of a step, it looked like when Judd/Martin would do a preseason game and just take the piss in first gear. Thomas didn't get out of first gear either.

Lingdren was actually really good, I was surprised/impressed. Clean in the air, did the right things, won't get a lot of touches every week but looks a smart player.

McGrath was really really solid. Visible leadership out there which is nice coming from a premiership club. Did the Gawn stuff where she would just stand at the right spot in the contest post-hitout where she'd either be an effective link in our handball chain or get in the opposition's way. Our rucks had a relatively easy task today but both were good - as said earlier in the thread far better connection with the mids than we've seen in previous seasons. Only issue is how we work with both McGrath and Lakay in the side - neither had much presence forward or back (we may have just been keeping the other off the ground, not sure, but one or both will have to find a secondary role I would have thought).

Both Wakfers continuing to build, and both hard in the contest. Not convinced either of them will ever be dominant but look solid and consistent.

Kavanagh is a really good kick. Don't recall that being a highlight of hers as a draftee but it's a weapon for an inside player.

Really liked our half-back structure in the first half, and in a bit of a combination comment the older heads were all really strong early on. Swanson was great in the backline, Hooker/Drennan a bit more mid but those three would all set up behind the ball really well and bully their younger opponents physically. Swanson is still such a beast and love her playing where she isn't forward of centre. We lost that momentum in the second half, structure completely fell apart.

Not the strongest game from a few of our B grade mid-aged players (Britton, Western, Roux etc). Similar to seasons past where playing Adelaide/Brisbane they'll be the ones who get beaten. Western I barely saw touch it, which was disappointing.

Harder, nastier edge to our whole side. Great to see.

Second half a lot worse than the first. I miss Sophie Mac - we still don't really have a #1 KPD who takes hold of the backline. Schilling wasn't great today. We also rotated the midfield really heavily - while I said earlier in the thread that I liked having Hooker/Drennan on the list and stand by it, we'll still be prone to inconsistency that should even up with a full-time midfield of Roberts, Rentsch, Lewis, Painter, Kavanagh, etc with a few years on them.

On the second half - we definitely played around with structures a bit but was really disappointing regardless. Think we showed signs of a team who has a really solid plan A, weak plan B. Fell apart when trying to mitigate damage and feel at least in this match sticking with plan A would have got us the win. Guess in a praccy it's worth addressing plan B now rather than later, giving a wake-up call for whenever we get ahead.

Umpires have been absolutely instructed to ping HTB regularly to open the game up. No real consideration of 'prior opportunity' and more that if players didn't get it out or wreck themselves trying, it'd be ball. Lots of frustration on the field (we were probably the beneficiaries more often in the first half, dogs in the second). Going to be a different rule to what we're used to. It's a bit much IMO - I understand opening the game up but players didn't want to pick up the ball in the second half, some would awkwardly tap it on, soccer it 2m or just handball to opposition and it got scrappier than it would have been otherwise. With 20% more leeway players will still want to move it on but feel like they actually want to pick it up and dispose of it I think.

Also really liked the community/training footage and clips in quarter/halftime breaks (they put up bulldogs stuff as well, not sure if the streams were any different between club sites). Obviously not an advertisement sponsored game so half time had to be filled with something but could easily have just been a kayo style logo saying stream will be back in a minute. Seems weird to put lots of effort into halftime of this stream given how poor our actual club posting has been, maybe the dogs set it all up who knows.

Super disappointing to not win a super winnable game especially on a shit day for sport overall but some decent signs at least.

I've heard that Bel Smith might not be playing anymore. Still listed, as far as I know. Would be fantastic to have this clarified by the club (lol).

And if she isn't, given she's been one of our best over the stretch, you'd expect it to be properly acknowledged (lol).

Hope it's not true, she's still one of the players who can hit reliably hit targets.

West Coasts match report lists Smith as one of our best players yesterday. Maybe they are trying to tell us something?

Anyone know what the cutoff date is for signing a replacement for Hosking (and potentially now Johnson)?

Freo announced one today.
Unfortunately I do not, gonna be a scramble if there is still time. Johnson was so good for us down back in the praccy and just on a personal level I'll be devastated for her if she's done another season ending injury 🤕.

Something tells me West Coast will have to keep Hosking on the list until the legality side of things is processed. Which is ****ed for us because she won't play, and we can't replace her I assume.

Has to be done by the start of R1, or at least that's how it's been previously.

Not to be confused with the top-up rule when the list is at <23 available players.

Any news ???? Anyone regarding Johnson and the severity of her knee injury.

The silence from the Club has been deafening.

Awesome news 😍 still wouldn't be surprised if she misses a good chunk of this season (eg if moderate MCL) but already convinced she's a long term keeper. Plus looked like she still had another gear or two to go up fitness wise, another ACL would have been a shocker for next year also.

Also explains why I didn't see Western in the second half. I'm 98% certain she started the game though, so maybe they mean she got pulled during?

Final thoughts - completely did not make the connection that Emma McDonald was the one who was the dogs' first pick in the draft. Full on thought she was in her mid 20s, physicality and presence wise. Looks way taller than her listed height as well. Reckon she'll be a ripper, scary Gemma Houghton full forward type, has that dawg in her that I'm worried Franklin lacks.

I desperately wanted us to take McDonald in the draft.... She's gonna be a weapon! Very good news for Johnson as she was by far our best rebound defender in the praccy, could miss a fair chunk of the season unfortunately depending on what injury she has.

I'm really hoping that with the improved delivery from our bolstered mids, Franky will develop.... She's got an absolute hoof on her and can roost it from 45m through the big ones, I feel it's very much a confidence thing for her as she had so much latent potential.
