The club has been vocal about not to keep getting younger and bring in mature players. List spots are making it hard to do that and hit the draft. Unless we ain’t interested in any of our NGAs/Fs or been assured of the extra list spots

I think the not getting younger is achieved by taking less players at the draft and keeping the players we already have who aren't complete right offs (hence keeping on Kelly, Cripps and Cole plus offering contracts to Bazzo and Chesser).

It is why I expect we go hard to bundle all of our picks into higher ones. We may only use 4 picks naturally in the draft. Then take on Banfield and Evans as rookies etc.

In the end we will still be younger (assuming Ryan is also gone, its 8 players out the door at an average age of 27.5). In fact, possibly the youngest list in history outside of the first year expansion teams (and even those ones may have had more 30 year olds). But not as young if we used every pick where it currently stands.

But the current top ranking midfield for next year would be

Yeo
Reid
Kelly
Hewy
Hall ?
McCarthy ?

Is it because he's considered too short at 200cm or because he literally doesn't ruck?
Both.

When he has rucked he definitely isn't getting any numbers that show he'll ever be and out and out ruck. 200cm these days is undersized for a first ruck.
If he's a hybrid forward/ resting ruck then you ask do we need him? We literally have Archer Reid for that. If we go CDT its because we see him being different.
I don't think he'll ever be good enough or strong enough to be a starting ruck. I'd hope he'd be a Luke Jackson type, but Jackson at his age had better numbers. They're exactly the same height, but CDT looks slighter.

He's a reformed basketballer, so he's got a lot of room for growth but a lot of risk.

I suppose I just love Luke Jackson. I think he's briliiant, not just because he's a BC-Leeming boy. If we can draft someone similar I'm all for it.

How do CDT and Luke Jacksons U18 campaigns compare?

How do CDT and Luke Jacksons U18 campaigns compare?
CDT

2025 AFL U18 National Championships (4 games)
14.5 disposals, 4.0 marks, 2.8 tackles, 14.0 hitouts, 0.8 goals

2025 Coates Talent League (3 games)
22.7 disposals, 4.3 marks, 1.3 tackles, 19.7 hitouts, 0.7 goals

Luke Jackson's 2019 U-18 carnival for WA (4 games)

Averages 16 possessions (11 contested), 37 hitouts, four clearances, three tackles, and two inside 50s

CDT isn't music to my ears. He isn't a good ruckman. And he isn't a midfielder. He isn't a key defender. He isn't a utility. He might be a key forward. We don't need a key forward. We need a ruckman who can win/half the contest and midfielders. He isn't a priority for us. He is a project that we can't afford the time trying to develop. If someone has a hard on for him let them come. If they don't, we better not take him with 1 or 2.
I remember when people didn't know what Dan Curtin was and didn't want him.

Would you trade pick 1 for Curtin this year?

I reckon I would.

As ruckman, one stat matter, hitouts.

I am glad the club said No to a long term with get out clauses in it for him after year 2. That was a bit one sided. He wanted the money locked in without committing to the club.

Not a fan of the idea of drafting this ruckman from Victoria with one of our first two picks. Unless i am missing something and he is a generational talent you just can't walk past like Natanui. Rucks are hard to evaluate when they are teenagers as has been discussed. And even if he is going to be good it will take 5 years for him to have an impact and we need players who can add something onfield a bit quicker than that.

I think it is likely we go

1 - Duursma
2 - CDT
Hawks Pick - Farrow

And this board will explode

Now correct me if I’m wrong here but part of the reason we find our selves in the shitty position we currently are is because we kept drafting flankers and KPP at the expense of midfielders ?

So the way to rectify that is by drafting:

A flanker - Duursma
A KPP - CDT

🤦‍♂️🤦🏼🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤷🤦‍♀️🤦🤦‍♂️🤦

Now when we did draft all those flankers and KPP, the apologists defended our recruiters and made excuses and allowances saying that they didn’t have any high end draft capital to spend on building a quality midfield.

So it’s that’s true, FFS, why would we draft a flanker and a KPP when we hold picks 1 & 2.

I thought when you held such high end valuable picks you stocked up on quality midfielders …….. because that where the best midfields come from - the pointy end of the draft - right ???????

Therefore wouldn’t you think we would have learnt from past mistakes and take a couple of quality midfielders when we hold such good pick and have to chance to do so . 🤷‍♂️

Post half in jest as surely we wouldn’t be so fu(king stupid as to make the same mistakes again…… would we …..??????????????????????????????

And we ran the Crows to the wire.

Without Yeo and Harely.

Baker, Graham and Hall are hard workers.

We add pick 1 and 2 as mids. Duursma and Sharp.

Another with the Hawks pick Farrow or Rodreguez .

Playing devil's advocate here...

CDT isn't a ruck's arseh*le, I'm hearing this from a lot of people and yet all of the draft experts and club recruiters are pumping him up as such a good ruck prospect, he's expected to go in the top 3.

Could it be that perhaps the armchair experts in this thread aren't seeing what the experts are seeing, because they don't know what they're actually talking about or looking for in a ruck prospect?

I feel like a lot of sentiment regarding draftees is circulated here because people are just parrotting the opinions of others, who may or may not even be that well informed themselves. Either that, or vibes, gut feelings, etc because you've watched a few clips that the legend noobermensch has put together but not actually seen the kids play live, watched what they do off the ball, how they cover the ground, so on.

Looking at it from an objective viewpoint, perhaps if we do end up taking CDT its because we have a brilliant track record of recognizing and developing talent in tall prospects? Perhaps we're drafting for the future and not just for next year? Perhaps we're trying to sure up our talls because the mid prospects in this draft aren't worth passing up CDT for? Perhaps we're looking at CDT for his upside and potential, rather than just his performances in the present?

**** I dunno man. Perhaps its just me, but if the club sees him as a clear top two pick in this draft then I'm backing them in. Yes, we need mids. Maybe they have other plans in that regard that...y'know...we're not all privvy to because we're on an online forum and not within the four walls of the club?

I've said it before, CDT wouldn't be my choice with pick 1 or 2 but at the same time I am no expert on the subject. Some of you here reckon you are, so much so that you're getting genuinely upset at the prospect of having him on our list next year. If you are, ask yourself..."Do I really know what the **** I'm talking about? Is the moaning about it justified?"

I guess time will tell. I'm at peace with whatever happens though, and get the feeling he will surprise a few posters here when he finally gets to pull on an AFL jumper at whichever club he lands. Relax, pour a scotch and enjoy the ride.

Oh and please disregard us taking Harry Barnett in the draft a few years ago

Duursma and CDT is the worst of both worlds.
Sharp and CDT or Duursma and Sharp.

The thing is, Barnett was a great draft pick. If my memory serves me right it was quite a steal at the pick we took him, mid-late 20s.

He just... didn't develop. It happens.

You would take anyone in this draft over warner for the same pick!! Delusional. No kid is going to shift the needle for 3 years or four. A winning culture is of the utmost importance and losing another 20+games next year isn't fathomable. This whole drafting for the next 10yrs bla bla. We need players exactly like warmer
So Shanahan, Harley Reid, Ginbey & Maric don't "shift the needle"?
Age profile is a BS myth. No one in the country would want Graham over Levi Ashcroft.

We need to bring in another 6 AA quality players over the next 3 years, and then they have to play for another decade after that. Paying up for anything other than FA is a fools game especially when the NEAFL teams double dip every year.

Shanahan projecting very good.
Reid a rare case. There is no reid in this draft
Ginbey in his third year as a defender, not a mid. That may well change.
Maric !! Really

Warners better than all of those 4 and anyone else on our list for that matter

100%.

Petruccelle was drafted in 2017 so has done 9 AFL pre-seasons. He's averaging 14 touches and a goal a game in the WAFL. He has elite pace for AFL level and should have elite endurance for WAFL level but where are the games that make you think 'wow why is this guy playing ressies?'? If we have 5-10+ listed players in the Beagles side someone should be dominating.

The great Rowan Jones was dropped back and played one WAFL game in 2006. 40 disposals 8 marks. Mark LeCras had 35 and kicked 7, then 3 weeks later had 29 and kicked 8. Not bad for a 20 year old who never had 30 touches in 219 AFL games.

It's a real head scratcher when AFL players with experience go back to the WAFL and are ordinary.
Those stats were under the old arrangement of playing for a traditional WAFL team ..
