If these stupid changes go through with bidding, all you’ll see is gun academy kids tank their draft year. It’s just all round dumb.

Plus funny that for some reason the AFL is trying to appease one of their smallest and most insignificant clubs by massively disadvantaging one of their biggest for 2026.

How the heck did this current bloke make it to CEO? He has no personality and constantly comes across as incompetent. Does he have pictures of someone or something?

No one is tanking their prospects at a career. Carlton fans are claiming their no.1 pick guy will just sit out the draft and hit the gym for a year. None of this will happen.

The benefit for us will be if we can get the prospects to do the whole I don't want to move away from home routine / we can bring players home later on in their careers. Unlike the VFL we aren't competing with 10 other clubs.

Twomey reporting on footy classified that the Eagles are going to ask in their priority pick submission for the ability to bring in a free agent without it diluting compensation.

So essentially they want the ability to get pick 2 for Oscar Allen AND pick up Starce as a FA with no dilution of their compo pick.

Would be shit for us as we wouldn't get a compo pick for Starce so would lose him for nothing - I would suggest in that event that we'd seriously consider matching the contract to prevent that happening.

In any event Starce narrowed down to staying with us or the Eagles.
I can’t see how that can be approved. Whether it’s Starce or a different RFA, the outcome directly affects one other clubs ability to negotiate fairly (given the AFL’s convoluted rules).
Using Starce as the example, it would mean WC can justify offering him a higher contract to blow us out of the water because he’s not costing them anything in potential trade, which limits our ability to match the offer.
Alternatively the AFL can give an end of R1 pick, which they can use to trade. They may trade for said RFA, or may keep it and use it, or trade for a different player… but it doesn’t impact fairness to one club directly.

(Or ignore all that. Since when does the AFL care about fairness).

Edit: we won’t get a compo pick for Starce anyway - anything we would get for Starce will be wiped out by signing OA. The only thing we do get is the ability to force a trade.

Ty Gallop to do the pre-season with the backs. I just made that up but I could see him doing a swap with his chase and pressure and play similar to Payne. Harris Andrews was a forward, Hipwood was a back in juniors Merritt came to us as a forward and made the change. If Allen and Draper come Ty might do well just experimenting as a backman for flexibility. He would be 3rd key behind Harris and Payne where he would be 3rd behind Morris and Allen in the forwards. Might be worth just exploring.

The AFL seem to want to even the playing field in the draft, but will continue to ignore their "fixture" issues, GF contract at MCG, too many Melbourne teams and dodgy 3rd party payments.
The AFL only want to make changes that benefit the VFL teams.

You know, I saw this earlier today and then went right through the day before I remembered that the 2025 draft is the next one and the 2026 draft is post-Annable. Happier with that then 🤣

I think it's best to look at this realistically. Cal said this is only one option that the AFL are looking at. Likewise, Cal also said he expects a lot of pushback from clubs if they went through this. I feel like clubs like Carlton, Essendon, Collingwood, Bulldogs, and every northern team would fight so hard against it that a compromise would have to be eventually made.

the funny outcome:

father son lockout of some description
NGA reverts to only picks after 40 being matchable
no changes to northern academy

get to work afl house

It's funny watching that AFL overhaul thread in main board descend to old man shouting at sky.

Omg we need to control academy !! Ok what are you on about ? Omg Brisbane get all topliners from academy ? No we didn't- here's the list. But what about Ashcroft, Fletcher etc - too much advantage ! Oh so youre upset about father son then. Nooo I'm upset about Brisbane getting all these good players while we are not getting any !! Well we were crap in terms of father son for 20 years. Aaarghhh I don't care i only care about right now! I'm not happy with what you have - not to mention you are even drafting well in open draft with player like Morris !!! I just want you to be crap !!!

YES! The father/sons Will & Levi Ashcroft and Jaspa Fletcher being not too subtly put in the same basket as "academy rorts" is peculiar albeit expected from the reactionary AFL/media/Victorian clubs.

Father/son is open to all teams, the only clubs with some sort of genuine complaint about it would be the Giants and Suns.

Yep zero respect for Swann now; what a piece of work he is; Judas like
Well, let’s give him time to settle his feet under the desk before losing your respect for him.

A lot of media noise but has Swann said anything yet? Not saying it won’t happen but it feels a bit to me the media are being fed propaganda by the likes of saints and dockers etc. to pressure the incoming Swann. They seem to be quiet vocal since Swann has stepped into the role so I feel it’s posturing to influence.

We gotta do everything we can to keep Starc. I was on record saying he was a mid player a few years back due to his turnover rate but he’s tightened that up and I’d have him top 6 most important players on our list. He’s a gun and if it’s needed to match the years on offer by the Eagles the club should do it.

I’d rather Starc than Draper and just hope Fort and Big O can do enough to compete. Starc is the premier small lockdown defender in the comp.

They're needs for different parts of the ground.
Defenders: Will need to train a lockdown defender on our list if Starc leaves
Rucks: Will need to bring a ruck in, even if we don't get Draper, because our ruck stocks next season will be Fort & Smith if, as expected, Day and Big O retire.
Forwards: Need Allen.

The request could be approved but unless we are stripped of the right to match the offer (which I think would contravene the CBA) it means nothing.

Obviously we aren't going to match a Starce offer that is crazy (e.g. 6 years at 1m+) but if West Coast are offering that then they have a real problem.

That's the big problem obviously. It's all hot desking, so he has to re-settle his feet every day!

To me I think it's clear WCE is angling for a priority pick they can then send off for Starcevich, e.g. end of first round that they "have to trade" and the claim for a free agent compensation-free is setting a negotiation anchor for that.

This trade bell guy on SEN just said Draper likely to Brisbane

New York Knicks L GIF by Sidetalk

With each passing day I feel Starce is more and more likely to leave.

Starting to worry bout Cal too.
