Yeah if it's mainly home then fair enough.

Seems to be a lot on him wanting to set himself up for life. We have to be more careful on overpaying than wce.

But we must have a very tight cap, so I don't think it's a stretch to say paying Draper $800k instead of another ruck $400k could cost us either starce or cal.
Also need to consider the Oscar Mcinerney likely to retire. I have no idea what he would be on, but as #1 ruck it's not peanuts. With the growth in the salary cap, there's likely not too much difference between what Oscar was being paid, and what the club would reasonably allocate for a #1 ruckman in 2026 forward.
By the end of 2027 the salary cap is about $18.4m, and average AFL salary will be $519K. I think we can afford to pay the #1 ruck above average wage.

Scrapping father-son should be the nail in the coffin of this current way out of their depth AFL leadership regime. It boggles the mind how they can make such bad decisions / push so hard to have them happen. Of all the possible options, this has to be the worst.

The entire VFL completely wigs out when a club from Interstate is good and wins a flag.

Not sure I'm going to be around long enough to see it, but I'm hanging out for that elusive Saints gun F/S. The Footy Gods will demand a sacrifice of the recalcitrant Sainters and for sure that gun will land here.
Maybe not too long to wait, Nick Riewoldt's eldest son is around 15 I believe and the Saints have started a father/son academy as there are a few more sons coming through apparently. Gold😂🤣😂

Not sure why it is any better when they decide to go to the GF losers or prelim finals losers. There is normally very little between the 4 teams. It often comes down to who was better on the day.
It sounds like we are the only team interested in him anyway.
Dan Houston who was the AA halfback, joined the then reigning premiers Collingwood last year.

Hopefully he's a top 5 pick otherwise the Saints can still draft him with their first rounder. Or they could tank of course.

Eddie McGuire on his and Jimmy Bartel's Podcast toady said - Something is wrong when the club captain of the wooden spoon team can go to the reigning Premiers.:mad:
If the reigning premiers are good enough to with the premiership and still have space in their cap then that’s just an incredibly well ran club on and off the field simple as that. Surprised so many people have this take

I'm not sure what the balance is but the compensation pick being tied to your finishing position has merit. 30 picks in the first round does seem like too many. But of the 12 extra first round picks, 3 were FA compensation, 2 were end of round priority picks that North had to trade.
The question is if being able to use a bunch of late picks for an elite talent is fair or not. Does it balance out somehow in the end if clubs on the bottom are shrewd?

From a quick look at what Richmond did, they knew a few teams had F/S and/or academy prospects so they shipped around their nothing picks and ended up with a really good draft hand. They turned picks 32, 42, 43 & 46 into pick 20, a first round pick. They turned pick 14 and Shai Bolton (who I am sure they didn't really want to lose) into picks 10, 11 & 18. Daniel Rioli and picks 51, 61, 70 and 76 became pick 6 and pick 23. They lost two players I am sure they would have liked to have kept but they turned a huge amount of nothing picks into 6, 20 & 23. I am sure they would have loved to draft Levi but their consolation prize was using their first pick after Levi to draft Josh Smillie then using our pick 20 to get Harry Armstrong. I would say they as a struggling club knew that ourselves and GC were looking to trade our better picks for more later picks that gave us more points all up and took full advantage of that. It helped us and it helped them.

It just seems the academy stuff is being used as a scape goat by poorly run clubs who are not making great decisions. Yes we are in our window now but Marshall is currently depth, Annabel next year will likely be midfield depth played out of position. I doubt either of those guys will be a major factor in why we win or don't win a premiership either this year, or next year. They will, along with Levi, Will and Jaspa help us from bottoming out when the nucleus of the current squad becomes too old/retires.

Flogs on the west coast board think they can get starce for a third rounder
They probably can.

If we get both Oscar Allen and Sam Draper as free agents, we’re not getting any compensation for Starcevich leaving as a free agent.

We can match West Coast’s offer sheet to Starcevich, to try and force a trade, but West Coast can then walk him through the PSD.

There’s also the potential for West Coast to package their two second round picks, to trade for one of Gold Coasts first round picks, leaving them with just 3rd round picks (theirs and Hawthorns).

So how well have Brisbane Lions done on father son selections.
A lot will depend on if Fletcher and the 2 Ashcroft's stay at the Lions
Up till those 3 it was just J Brown

Edits to the below table for Lions. Did not bother with the Pies
Fletcher 64 games now
Will A has 54 games now
Levi A has 23 games now

Management 101 - I am going to take your head - wtf no way, chest beating. Management - your right, I will only take an arm, and be thankful for my gratitude.

Lol we still lose an arm.

Quite correct, an ambit claim made of whispers. It's straight from the Donald Trump hand book, media management 101. Give people something new to hyper ventilate over so they move on from the current debacle fast e.g. Rankin.

It's always been overgenerous to be able to not only jump the queue but get a discount at the same time. The real gift is to match an early bid and so paying overs should help to somewhat alleviate that disparity. Another option might be to allow only one match for the first two rounds.

No matter what the AFL won't throw the whole system out or leave it as it is, their mantra is to disappoint everyone equally; and we're back to Rankin again.

Regarding adding picks into the first round this could be fixed by applying a rule mandating a similar pick must be used. Example would be to match a bid at 1-10, you need a pick in 1-20. To match a bid at 11-20, you need a pick in 11-30.
This pretty much ensures the club can't trade out of the first round to take a top-10 pick, and the inserted pick is recovered before the end of the first round.
If there are 2 top-10 prospects, you may need to find a way to trade in an additional pick in the first round. This is pretty challenging, particularly for clubs in our position where we've finished near the top of the ladder for several years running.

Potentially the 10% discount could also be removed (but let's see how the changes made for this draft impact things). The reward you get for having a f/s or academy prospect is you can pick a player ahead of your normal selection in the draft.

Personally if you think your (NGA,F/S, Academy) player going first round, then you need to use a first round pick and plus others to match points.
The whole trade out your first for points then we end up 29 first round picks as you now back in the first round with points is silly.

Picks in 1st round should be 18 :) If not for the stupid FA and AFL magic priority picks
2024 27 3 NGA/A 1 FS 3 FA 2 Priority
2023 29 5 NGA/A 2 FS 3 FA
2022 21 3 FS and NGA/A
2021 20 2 FS
2020 26 2 FA 5 NGA/A 1 Priority

If Suns want 3 kids from the academy in the first round they need 3 first round picks.
So need to trade players or picks for them.

Bombers last year traded pick 9 for points. Then got Kako at 13
We traded our first for points then got Levi at 5 and Marshall at 25.
Marshall should of been 2nd round although all the extra picks.
