Interesting to know if any of these moves (IE starc, cal) are dependent on whether we go back to back.

If we do, it's kind of a mini dynasty that will always be remembered as that and they may feel like their job is done

If we don't, they might want one more crack at a flag next year (maybe less relevant for Cal if he goes to the crows)

Alternatively maybe they would want to attempt a 3-peat if we did go b2b? Who knows!

This time last year I was ok for Zac to explore his options after what was a definite down year for him.

I’ve completely changed my tune this year though. We’ve waited the best part of 6-7 years for him to show more consistency like he has this year, I’d hate to lose that now.

Although like I said the other day I figured the $1m offers would start coming for him. He’d play permanently in the guts at a team like the Bombers.

It was the other giggly boy that mentioned Bailey but Cal discussed how Essendon have been keen on Kai for a while
I dod find it strange as I dont really see Bailey or Lohman as needs for Essendon. Like they both are quality players that would improve their list but the holes are way more in the midfield than small forward/flankers. I thought they already had Kako and some good small NGA talent coming through in that role

Essendon could do with more Players That Are Good and with less Players That Are Bad.

At some point in time we will lose someone of significance from our list to a 'go-father' type offer. It will be incredibly difficult to hold on to everyone, so shedding in positions we think we can cover might be the best way forward. To extract maximum value the pre-agent trade would enable us to control the narrative somewhat, that is on the premise we think we are going to be a fair chance to lose him next year. I’d also think getting in future picks would be on the table rather than current year picks.

Trust Dom will make the right call.

Why should we care about extracting maximum value though?

In a flag window, one more year of Zac is worth way more than a future 1st to us. We’ve had enough first round rorts to keep replenishing.

Keeps the window open for longer when you maximise value. Bailey is a cream player, not one you pay silly amounts for. Much like Shai Bolton.

Put it this way, we won the grand final with him last year and were basically carrying him.

Obviously would love to keep him (especially being a member of the Zac Bailey fan club) but not at the expense of more crucial pieces of the puzzle.

In Dom I trust.

Also, spare a thought for Dom Fay in all this.

You can't keep everyone. Especially with how large the cap is these days. You have a lot of clubs with tons of salary cap space to spare, and they could pay double what we're offering. In the end, being an AFL player is also a job and most people wouldn't stay at a place if they knew they could get a lot more elsewhere. Geelong is able to circumvent this by paying a core of 6-8 players really well and building a young group around that. I feel like we're doing the same, and we will have to lose players from time to time. Let's just hope we're adequately compensated for it and find the best replacement. Plus, it would be hypocritical for us to be angry at Zac if he left, while applauding the club for going after Allen, Joe, Draper, etc. It's the nature of the game

If his form continues this season he’ll be getting $1m for 6 years at the Lions, and will be part of the best midfield rotation in the league too.

Moments like this is why i'm happy for neale to leave. I get it, he's our best player (even if he has declined this year). But he would also be very happy to go back to WA and we need to give some of our midfielders more minutes as well. The cap release of losing Lachie would easily give us enough room to keep Zac or anyone else who would be wanting a pay rise.

Likewise, Zac is worth two firsts. I feel like we should match it to force a trade, although if we did match it, Zac would probably just stay, lol.

The question is about trading Zac this year though instead of keeping him for next year though?

On the salary front mccluggage’s contract is the ceiling for any of our players I think. So we can’t compete with 1.3 but 1m for 6 years is reasonable given where the cap is at now.

Keeping Zac for next year when we are tilting for a flag again is more important than some picks.

Can someone photoshop ‘F u ck them picks’ onto a black and white photo of Fages? I’m at work.

I think you’re reading Bailey wrong this season. He’s much better than cream, and his end of season exposure in the middle shows he still has more to give.

I don’t wish to upset my boy Briztoon

The question is if we need to match $1.3m. $1m for 6 is still a lot of money and enough to set up someone for life.
So the decision is if the extra money (after tax) is worth leaving and playing with your mates in a winning side, to go to who knows what.
There’s a lot of money being thrown around currently, but plenty of players rejected St Kilda & North Melbourne money (Finn Callaghan comes to mind), before TDK took the bait - and TDK isn’t exactly leaving the happiest club in the league.

Think we just have to trust the club on this one. My preference is he signs a long term deal, but if they do look to move him on this year, you'd assume that's because we've got a fair idea that we can't compete with offers next year and he'll be on his way.

His trade value would be at it's highest right now after the AA year he's had, so if the club knows he's leaving in 12 months time, they'll have a decision to make as to whether it's better we get another 12 months from him and give him away for what will (hopefully) be a crap late teens/early 20s pick (after bids), or we sell high this year and cash in, and either use a pick/s before Annable or to grab another player.

Again I reiterate my preference is for him to stay long term though, we've invested a lot in him over a number of years.

I just don’t see any trade that is worth doing this year.

It was also a job to our three-peat team in 01-03 and rather the successful run we had b/n 99-04 and we lost one player (Des Headland) in that time who went back to WA after winning a flag with us in 02 (even he admits now it was mistake) and trust me, every other player could have got a lot more elsewhere but chose success over an extra 10-30% more elsewhere.

This argument that it was different then to now is utter horseshit.

Reckon Craig Bolton left round then too?

Bailey and pick 16 to Essendon, for Ridley and Kako as Charlie’s future replacement, and their pick 5.
Gotta play hard with Essendon.

Tom Boyd one of the only times I can recall an opposing club getting to work in a trade period to force someone to be included in the deal?
Brandon Ryan...

There’s plenty of people who stay in their job because they like what they’re doing and the people they do it with, they feel valued and fulfilled and don’t need the pressure that more money would bring - particularly when they're well paid already.

There’s also people who take the extra money on offer, realise it’s not worth the extra stress, and leave. I’m one of them - but i was fortunate enough to get back into a similar role to what i was originally doing and couldn’t be happier!

When was the last time a club pulled out of acquiring a player after the bid has been matched? It’s never happened to my understanding?

Considering the deal is over 6 years we would easily be able to match it, considering we don’t have that many long-term contracts.

So we’d match and force a trade, providing we finish high on the ladder again next year.

But yeah, if he was going to leave I’d prefer to get on the front foot this year to maximise leverage.

Ridley and a future first
