That really good first could be anything. It might even get us a player like Zac Bailey!
More chance of getting a player like Zac Bailey if we stick with the real Zac Bailey instead of hoping for a player like Zac Bailey in the lottery that is the draft Tom.

Unless I misheard Beveridge, wasn’t he just spitballing that Essendon should go after Bailey, and that there’s no actual link or evidence for Essendon chasing Bailey atm.

You misheard. Twomey said they put a $1.3mil offer for them. Later Beveridge said if Brisbane want Ridley then Essendon should ask for Bailey

I'm judging on basic contracts the least you can earn when not rookie is $460k.I heard Mitch Cleary say
I feel Day got a bit extra to keep him out of retirement as the stop gap for Joey
The least you can earn is ~$130k. The average of all players, including those in their prime, etc, is ~$450k. We picked up a delisted player - if Mitch is saying Day got a bit extra, it'd be over the minimum not the average.

(Figures from last year since that's the latest I can find).

My uneducated guesstimate is that Sam Day would be on something like 300K for his 1 season dalliance with the Lions, an absolute bargain for us and Sam if it ends in a flag.

Pretty exciting to think we still have players keen on coming to us. Feels like our squad is in its sweet spot right now with an elite group of players with a good mix of ages.

Draper and Allen whilst not elite are clearly coming in to fill a weakness in our list. Allen has scope to be a top tier key forward and Allen is an athletic ruck who will compete.

The Ridley interest makes sense given how poor the Doedee situation is playing out and the potential retirement of Ryan Lester.

All looking pretty rosy up in Brisbane Town.

My understanding was Twomey said that Essendon are preparing to make a huge play for Bailey not that they had already.

Yep, even more confident now that we can cover our soon to retire/older best 22 guys, brackets is age at start of next season.

Dayne Zorko(37)- His elite distribution out of the D50 could be the hardest to fill if Kiddy Coleman doesn't get back to his best.

Ryan Lester(33)- Froggy has been terrific the last few seasons, Doedee I'm not confident on getting back to his best after this long out, probably why we are linked to Jordan Ridley, Luke Lloyd showing promise.

Lachie Neale(32)- His recent injury layoff has shown Lachie missing is not a vital blow, we have great midfield depth with more elite talent coming eg Daniel Annable, Caylen Murran, Matthew Owen.

Charlie Cameron(31)- Special player at his best, probably need some elite speed to come in to top our forward mix off, Geesu/trade?

Who knows though, the way Zork's and Froggy have been playing they could continue for 2-3 more seasons, Lachie ultra professional so could see him playing longer than expected, Charlie contracted to end of 2028.

Even for him. Playing in a big final at the MCG would be a massive moment.
Hes done the job we needed and considering the options we had and the resources at the time, I see it as win win for both parties right now

And they should be within their rights to tell the person to get ****ed.

I would but i reckon players don't notice it most of the time (not all of the time).

Playing requires emotional regulation to a level i don't have, including the ability to move on immediately from mistakes and stuff that happens on field and insults from opposition.

Words from people in the crowd are buzzing mosquitos. Annoying at times but hardly worth noticing..

My opinion is that Essendon have leaked that Bailey news to Twomey to distract from the story that they're struggling so much so that even their 250+ game captain is thinking about leaving their club.

Jokes on them because their captain saw the headline 'Richest deal in Essendon history to be offered to Zac...' and immediately called his agents to arrange for 5 more players at the bottom of their list to be cut so he can get yet another contract extension.

Coterie endorsed.

In other words just wait until we’ve got our two elite NGA players first?
Too cynical. They’re 100% correct - if the AFL is hellbent on another knee-jerk reaction, they have to allow a transition period. The AFL introduced 2-year forward pick trading which means sacrificing now for future draft selections. Clubs (like ours) make significant financial investment in pathways. Those investments need time to mature.

I’m with Cal Twomey - unless round-1 is available for f/s or academy matching, then what’s the point? Sure it’s nice to be able to pickup a player at pick-25 using pick 40 - but that player isn’t going to move the needle or get fans excited.

Kiddy Coleman doesn’t excite you?

Oh I agree that it’s a knee jerk reaction to make a change this quickly. Just funny that the club with probably the most to gain over the next 2-3 years have asked for that.

I think the discount at this point is a bad idea, the benefit is having access to the player so nobody else can. There probably shouldn’t be scenarios where you can bring in Ashcroft, Fletcher and Dunkley in the one off-season anymore unless you’re spending picks 2-3 years in advance.

He does now (or did once he built his tank so he could run out a match, before he did his knee). I was referring to the draft period. Clearly players in round-1 generate a lot more talk and excitement amongst fans. After that things get a bit more murky.
For every kiddy Coleman’s, there a couple of Connor Ballenden or Jacob Allison (and appreciate these guys were taken later, but they come to mind as examples!).

Totally with you - I’d be removing the discount, guaranteed access to a player ahead of your existing draft picks is the benefit.

Carlton are about to bottom out at the exact same time they have a highly rated father son.

Essendon are about to bottom out at the exact same time they have a highly rated father son, and have a heap of decent nga kids.

Port are about to bottom out at the exact same time they have highly rated nga kids in consecutive drafts.

Will be interesting what each club does with their first round picks.

lol at Essington fans thinking Ridley for Bailey is fair 🤣

Wouldn’t trade him as he will be important for our three peat next year, but I suppose if I had to name a price - their 2 first round picks and Ridley will have to do.

It definitely seems like the minority voices are being the loudest with this issue. Thought they would have been stronger lobbying against it to be honest.

Add in the Northern Academy’s, Collingwood, Geelong and Bulldogs being recent beneficiaries. Can only really think StKilda and North’s being the strongest opposition to the whole system.
