I have always considered Brisbane my second team as they came into the then VFL at the same time as us and from memory they could get 2 players from the existing teams - those teams got to choose who they were.

The Bad News Bears sole purpose was to provide the millions required to stop the VFL clubs going bankrupt.

What the Bears were not meant to be was competitive and a genuine threat to Victorian hegemony in the game.

The Vic-centric nature of the competition today is nothing compared to that of the 80s/90s.

Buckley should have been barred from getting to Collingwood given the way he and the Pies acted to force the Bears' hand.

But back then the "A"FL looked even more the other way as Vic clubs raided Brisbane for players than they have over the GC/GWS for the last decade.

(I'd add I've been surprised at how likeable Buckley generally seems to be, given all that and his general Pieishness)

I would say we've taken massive steps back toward this since covid after it really seeming like there was an effort to treat the league as a national comp from the early 2000's.

Definately taken a step backwards.

There was a push to make Victorian sides stand on their own.

We had Fitzroy merger, a proposed Melbourne Hawks merger, and push to relocate Kangaroos multiple times (QLD, Canberra & Tas) - all of that talk has shutdown and it's back to being a protectionist Victorian league propping up teams that shouldn't be in a national comp based on supporter ship / viability (North, Saints, Bulldogs). The small vic clubs barely add anything re TV rights - GC & GWS do nationally.

There should be 3 less Vic teams (via mergers, relocation or relegation). We should be reducing the comp size, not adding - even with the addition of Tasmania

Just watched Sept 3 "The Front Bar", how good's Harry Taylor, comes across as a nice down to earth bloke, 100% country bred.
Imagine given his skill and attitude he'd be a massive plus to any coaching lineup, brilliant roll model for the young fellas.
Hope we can hold onto him for a long time at WC.
PS, rocked the panel when they asked who's the best Fwd he ever played on
